Susan's hunting dog Shadow came along for the ride and was the sweetest dog and my new best friend. We even received a kiss from Nic's horse Pale Girl. Located off Independence Pass after mile marker 54 and you'll see a brown sign on the right that says horse rides. My friend and I did a 2 hour horseback ride that we were able to book same day and it ended up being just us and Tracy (the guide). We had such an amazing time and the views were more than we could've asked for! We rode up to the lost man reservoir then stopped further along for the horses to eat some grass as we picked sweet wild strawberries! Amazing experience taking a half-day horseback riding excursion today with Independence Pass Outfitting Co! We arrived at 9:30am and spent about 2 hours making our way up the mountain. The wranglers were very friendly & knowledgable of the area. They take great care of their horses & it was evident by how well tempered and beautiful they all were. Once at the top, we had spectacular views of the mountains and took a pit stop by a small pond where the horses rested & we had the opportunity for some amazing photos. Going down was a lot quicker as the horses didn't need to stop and rest as frequently. We will definitely be back. Thanks for everything!! read more

Awesome outfit! Suzy, Tracy, and Kessler were so kind, helpful, and fun. Our family of 5 ranging from 12 - 55 enjoyed the trip through the woods and into the high mountain valley. My friends and I did the half day horseback ride with Desler. It was an awesome experience from head to start! Firstly, they were very accommodating when we arrived the first day to pouring rain and asked to reschedule to the next day when the weather forecast was better. They do have rain gear if you're not afraid of getting wet and I think it would have been fun anyway, but I'm still glad we waited for the next day because the weather was gorgeous! I knew it was going to be great when I pulled into the camp and the two dogs, Shadow and Oliver, ran up to greet us. Although most of us had ridden before, one of my friends had never but she became really comfortable on the horse after only a few minutes on the trail. The whole trail was gorgeous, we went up to the very top of a mountain where there was a beautiful lake and we had lunch there (included in the half day ride!). Shadow and Oliver followed us the whole way up. We had great conversation with Desler the entire trip, learning about his life in Colorado and how the company is family owned and operated. Our time with IPOC was the highlight of our trip. My friends could not stop talking about it the whole way back to Denver to catch our flight back home. We got great photos and memories and will definitely be back when we return to Aspen. read more

Please don't pass up this adventure if visiting Aspen. It was one of the highlights of our week. Tracy was our cowboy guide, and Susan was there to greet us when we arrived. The horses were well trained, sharp, and responsive. We climbed Midway Trail and had a 1/2 experience that we will cherish forever. Don't be put off by lack of a slick website (Tracy readily admits he doesn't do computers). The drive out to their small "ranch" is beautiful, about 20 min outside Aspen. Wow! What an amazing ride. The owners are true horse people. I went on a solo ride with Tracy and had the pleasure of talking horses with him the whole time. Super nice guy and an incredible horseman. Ive been riding 25 years and have seen many outfitting places - this is one of the most authentic with excellent horsemanship. I just got back from a trip to Aspen and I have to recommend checking out the Lost Man trail off Independence Pass on horseback. I'm writing this review because I was really impressed with the guides we chose: Independence Pass Outfitting Company (http://www.ipocllc.com/horseback-riding-aspen-colorado) The guys from Independence Pass Outfitting Co. were awesome, I got to ride with and get to know four of them. The guides handled the horses with ease and confidence and were friendly and enjoyable afternoon riding companions! It had been about a decade since I've been on a horse but the horse I got to ride was a dream- sure footed and sturdy, he handled the Lost Man trail like a champ! As I mentioned the guides lead us up and around the Lost Man trail off Independence Pass, there was a decent elevation change which afforded these amazing views, fresh air and some serious peace and quiet! I had so much fun I went a second time and chose them again! I got to go on a different trail and ride another horse- he was gorgeous and spirited; a lot of fun. I like these guys and will always call them to go riding when I'm in Aspen. Independence Pass Outfitters had quite a few horses, all pretty different so if you're a really good rider you won't get stuck on the slow horse, but if you are a novice you can ride one of the sweet horses which served as therapy horses in a previous setting. This company offers a few other services, I've fished with them before (yeah I caught like five trout!!) but haven't gone hunting or out in the wilderness. We booked an elaborate trip for a party of 10 with Ian McLendon and his outfitters for a weekend of horseback riding, camping, fishing and shooting high up near Truro peak in White River National Forest. Ian is a first class guide and he and his staff pulled off an incredible logistical feat for our large group to make for one of the best weekends we've ever had in the Rockies! My cousin and I had a 4 hour ride on Friday morning with Dressler. My cousin isn't very confident on horses but after a few minutes of the ride she was feeling fine. Dressler and his mom were welcoming and personable. Dressler stopped whenever we needed or wanted to, helped us take pictures and carried on amiable conversation throughout. The packed lunch was a nice home packed lunch and perfect. The horses were well suited to the ride and the surroundings were breathtaking. Dressler provided us with rain slickers as it was raining off and on. All in all, a fantastic ride. I highly recommend them. read more

Our family booked a trip with Ian McLendon and IPOC last summer. It was an incredible experience and we all will carry the memories for a lifetime! We rode up the pass on our horses and were able to experience Independence Pass in a totally unique and different way than in a car. Our day started in Aspen where we saw the morning paragliders landing, elk grazing and rock climbers heading up sheer rock faces. After a dip in the Lost Man Reservoir, we reached the summit for lunch. Ian and his crew took care of everything and we were able to really enjoy the adventure in a safe and fun way. My kids (ages 10 and 12) and I went on a two-hour trail ride here over the summer. One of the nicest rides we've ever done in Colorado. The horses are nice quality and well cared for.
