The perfect hotspot for fast fashion and a half effort basket evaluation. I've been to many Plato's closets and this is by far the worst, the lack of original clothes, messy arrangements and filthy dressings rooms should be enough to make you steer clear, but if it isn't maybe the skimming through of your brought in clothes might do the trick. Just a word of advice: if y'all are going to have customers work on their clothes for hours, laundering and preparing them y'all should do the same. read more

Please PLEASE do not come here!!! Sell your clothes online. I have NO idea how this business is still open because they are robbing people (and many desperate people I'm sure) blind. I hate selling things online and had a bunch of very high end clothes and purses and thought that Plato's would be a great way to get them off my hands as well as getting some return on my investments. (Now I will only sell online bc of this store specifically) They said they would like to purchase all 20 items I brought. 16 of these items had price tags still on and all were over 175 dollars each. Additionally I brought in a 450 dollar purse (they said they'd buy it for 16 dollars). Total offer they gave me was 75 DOLLARS. Please please if you need money do NOT sell your clothes here!!!! I saw a pair of shoes on Plato's San Marcos Instagram that they had posted but they were only going to be available at their shoe event. I made a trip from Austin to San Marcos specifically for those shoes and got there 30 minutes before the shoe event started so I would have a chance of getting them. When they opened the doors the pair of shoes were no where to be found. I asked a manager if he had seen the shoes and he told me another manager bought them the night before. I was very angry because 1) I came from Austin for ONLY those shoes that I thought weren't available until the event. 2) They had the shoes posted for the event and the post was still available at time of event and the shoes were not marked SOLD. 3) I was not the only one that received false advertisement 2 other customers were looking for shoes they posted for the event and the shoes had already been sold to a employee. I did not think it was fair that the shoes were posted and available for the event but the MANAGER went in the night before and bought them. Very unprofessional. Very angry. read more

Typically I would give this place 5 stars because I go here all the time and the employees are always nice. However, during one of my last trips I noticed a knock-off Kendra Scott necklace being sold as genuine for $40. I thought maybe a less-than-knowledgable person must've just mislabeled it, so I told the employees about the discrepancy and they set it behind the counter. During my most recent trip, I saw that the same necklace was out on the jewelry rack AGAIN. I asked an employee about it, reminding her that that it was a knock-off. She acknowledged that it was mislabeled and said/did nothing else. At this point it seems intentional. There's no reason the mislabeled item should still be for sale. The whole incident made me lose some respect for this store. read more

Beyond disappointed, shocked, and embarrassed. This was my first and last time trying to sell with Plato's Closet. I took 4 bags/baskets of clothes and accessories and they bought NOTHING. Every single item they passed on. An employee explained the process before we began but failed to mention they need men's items which we had none of. Had we known this we wouldn't have wasted our time or theirs. We waited 30+ minutes to be told that our items were stained and torn.. FALSE. Some items still had tags so I'm confused on that. Some of the items I brought in were better than what was being sold in store. Won't be returning. read more

I went to this Plato's Closet for the first time today. I had some time to kill so I went in because I saw a 20% off sign in the window, & was excited that the purses & accessories were at the store entrance, right up front. I was unimpressed. I was sad to see the selection of bags was sorely lacking & uninspired. I saw a $1 pencil pouch from Dollar Tree marked up to $5. I know they have to make a profit, but for as picky as I overheard the sales people be towards a girl who was selling her clothing, that's a big faux pas. The DT tag was still on the pouch, for crying out loud. I did find an item I wanted, but I had to wait in line for nearly 7 minutes because the store associates kept helping people who just walked up to the register before me & didn't wait in line. (I should have spoken up, I know, but I had a sore throat & wasn't feeling great.) To their credit, the cashier who helped me was very friendly & informed me of their rewards program. He made sure I got that 20% off, too. However, I don't think I'll be coming back to this Plato's Closet. The stock wasn't eye catching & the prices were inflated for the brands available. To start off, my sense of style has always been very current and up to date. I brought in some clothes a day ago and left with $29, I was pleased that they like my clothes and that I had some extra cash. HOWEVER, today I brought in a full box of an assortment of clothes. At least 10 of the items were purchased in the last 6 months, at least another 10 were no more than a year old including items like Calvin Klein, Nautica, and many more nice brands. When I arrived to pick my items up, I was told that my clothes were too old and that they were going to pass on ALL of my items. These were almost all NEW, in GOOD QUALITY and without damage. I am an avid secondhand resale shopper. Being as such, I love how I can go into this Plato's and find atleast one cute thing every visit. On another topic, I've worked at a Plato's closet in the past (for 3 yrs) and know a good stack of clothes from a bad one. I purposely pick out things in my closet I know would sell in a store and bring them in, in hopes to make a quick buck. However, all I've ever received is $10 or less (and I get it, some things they might be over stocked in) but when I flip through the store I see ratty graphic tee's for $7, shirts with stains, and shoes with rips in them it seems a little wrong. ALSO, there's an employee there (don't know her name), small/fragile looking with glasses, who is always fairy rude and snippy it's pretty obnoxious. 2-3 stars for the decent selection. read more

DO NOT COME HERE. Went in with my clothes folded in a new trash bag and was told that they have a new policy where they don't accept clothes in plastic bags. I then offered to take the clothes out of the bag and she refused to take them without a container so I asked if they had a container for me to put them and she said they don't supply any type of container. At this point i'm just pissed off but I was trying to get rid of some clothes so I then asked what I should do and I was told to walk across the street to buy a bin for the clothes they would've ripped me off for anyways. So I said bet then got in my car, went to Uptown Cheapskate and got $70 for my clothes in the trash bag. They were much more friendly and welcoming and gave me cash for my clothes fast. Despite a smaller location of this Plato's closet is organized to a T so it's very easy to search for treasures. Add to that a delightful young lady was very patient and helpful with me... By far the worst Platos Closet location I've been to. I brought in brand new items from great brands and they "passed" on them. Offered me $5 for 2 brand new shirtsfrom UO, a dress from ANTHROPOLOGIE and a pair of shoes KEDS . It wasn't until I spoke to a manager that they offered more for my items and bought more of them. It was ridiculous. I recommend selling items at the local consignment shop in the square instead. This place is horrible. read more

I just moved here from out of state and am in the process of getting settled and decided to get rid of old clothes and get new stuff, and what's better than platos to do both at? I walked in with a bag (brand new plastic bag) full of stuff and they turned me away because it was in a bag. I tried to inform them that I just moved and don't have anything but they refused. Plato's has always been so snotty and picky about clothes I bring in to sell at almost every location. I have brought very new/barely or never used couture clothes and they turn them down in a very condescending manner after wasting my time "looking through them" just so I'll shop at the store while they look. Last time I came in the took one pair of denim shorts that my mother had altered and added lace to out of a substantial amount of couture and brand label clothes from the mall that I had purchased in the past year or less. Have been going to Plato's a closet since I've been in high school. Recently moved to buda and found my store in San Marcos! I'm always finding great gems there! I recently went this past Sunday and i believe it was 40% off my entire purchase I was excited! I bought 3 pants, 2 shorts, and 2 tops it was around 80$, with the discount it came out to 43$ + I had points from last time. So it discounted the items even more. My boyfriend and I went to this plato's last week so I could sell some old clothes I no longer wear, & we were both disappointed with what we left with. While I waited for my basket of clothes to be looked at we walked around the store. Multiple shoes and shirts w stains & scuff marks, stuff that didn't look like it would actually be bought by this place. So when my basket was done they tell me they only want 7 items (mix of shirts, shorts & dresses) & i got $16 for it when everything was in perfect condition, shirts still had tags, & everything was definitely clean... unlike other items i had seen throughout the store. Great staff, always well staffed, small selection of items but they're usually pretty good quality. No lululemon section which is a bummer, and hardly have any designer items (kate spade, kendra Scott, michael Kors, etc) But a very clean and well kept location. Loved the shoes and clothing there. However I wouldn't recommend going to sell your stuff. It took them about 45 mins for them to get to my friends items just to tell her they wouldn't take anything. I just think that's ridiculous considering how long we were in there. Perhaps they can start giving people an estimated wait time or something. 45 mins is way too long. I've been a loyal customer at this Plato's closet for years. I recently bought a beautiful pair of Vince Camuto shoes from this Plato's closet. Unfortunately they put a price tag sticker on the leather soul of the shoe which if it is removed ruins the shoe completely. I called this morning and was told to bring the shoes in to see what they could do. I drove half an hour to bring the shoes in just to be told in the most rude way that there was absolutely nothing they could do. I couldn't get my money back nor could they help me take the sticker off. I've never experienced such horrible customer service or someone who thinks it's okay to ruin a shoe I bought and not think they have any sort of responsibility toward it. I understand the damage wasn't intentional but a nicer attitude or maybe some help could've changed the situation. I will never sell/buy with Plato's Closet again until they have some serious customer service changes and I will be telling everyone I know as well. read more

I have been to many Plato's closets in the Houston and Austin area so I was excited that they finally opened one in San Marcos. First time I shopped there, there was a really sweet guy that was very friendly and a girl with glasses, very sweet. However a lot of the stuff is way over prized and the jewelry I have seen at Walmart or target sold for double the price here. Also ALOT of the stuff STILL has tags on them. I'm guessing it's to show how "new" the items are, but they are selling it more for what it sold before. Big mistake to leave tags on. Second time I went staff was NOT very friendly. I saw alot more clothes with tags showing original prices that were way less than what they were selling them for. I'm giving 3 stars because the place is very well organized, clean, dressing rooms are clutter free.... how it should be. But they need to stop over pricing stuff or change the employee who's responsibility is to price items. & when you tell them an item still has the tag on they don't do anything about it. Their employees are garbage and they're so behind the technology curve. I asked where I could sign in and the girl at the counter said "I guess here if you want" and I was confused because any Plato's I've been to has had an iPad to check in at. The girl told me I would need to get my bags from my car and did not even offer to help, so I went to get my bags and when I went back in she was no longer at the counter so another lady helped me. I just went to Uptown Cheapskate and I would highly recommend driving 2 miles away from this Plato's and going there instead. UC was much more enjoyable, the selection was much more organized, the prices were better with the sales they offered, the employees were so much nicer, they actually offer help there, and all around the store was better than this place! Do yourself a favor and skip Plato's! I even brought 2 bags of clothes to UC and they went through it all in 15 minutes... I brought the remaining clothes to Plato's and they said it would be at least 30 minutes and they don't give a courtesy call so I could wait there or be back by 5.... read more

They had so many great name brand items that were almost new! Didn't pay over $11 for any item of clothing. Lots of Kendra Scott and Vera Bradley. Staff was super friendly. Place was super organized and clean! Live about an hour and a half away but going to make a trip back here soon because it's so worth the drive! read more

I brought in a bag of clothes that were all new name brand - dresses from white house black market, ann taylor, high end professional clothes. I also had a brand new leather Kate Spade purse that was still in the original protective bag that retailed at over $200 - never been used. They offered me $26 for the Kate Spade purse and 6 items. It was such a rip off. Like other shoppers I looked around and saw off brand shirts with stains and pilling fabric for sale. The last time I was in there I saw a used Kate Spade in terrible condition for $100 - so sheisty - I will never sell anything here again. I think when they saw I was in my 30s they figured all my clothes were automatically too out of style. They also don't donate the unsold clothes so I was stuck with a bag of clothes going in and coming out. No thanks - perhaps next time I need to find a Plato's closet that ISN'T in a college town.
