So many of their clothes were stained, snagged, etc. Not to mention over half of their clothes/shoes are very outdated. There were two employees working when I was there. One of the girls was nice, it seemed as though she was new. However, the other girl was rude, short with customers, and seemed like she'd rather be anywhere but there. I'm sure I'm not the only customer who felt like an inconvenience being there/asking for a dressing room. My sister and I are from Topeka but we were in Lawrence hanging out and she had a gift card to Plato's closet. Again we are from Topeka so the gift card was purchased in Topeka. And after looking around they have a really great selection of clothes, but the workers seemed so clueless and Unfriendly. After looking, my sister found something that she wanted so we went up and she had said I have a gift card and after the guy tried to swipe it, he goes, "oh wait this is a gift card?" then he goes, "we don't take gift cards." Super frustrating!!!! Why would Plato's closet offer gift cards as an option if you can't even use it. Stupid. What!?! You're telling me I can get money for clothing I don't wear anymore!!! WOOHOO! My girlfriend and I like to go through our closets every couple of months or whenever we get some new clothing and take something we haven't worn in a while to Plato's Closet for some cash. I take a peek around the store every once in a while but I usually don't buy anything because then I would have to go back through my clothing to find something else to sell. For that reason I can't really comment on the available selection. It's a good way to keep our closets clean while getting cash back. We never get a ton of money back but getting a little money for something you don't wear is better than it just sitting there nothing. I have some really nice shoes and clothes (some shoes that are like $200 heels) ...brought them in to sell and got $30 for 4 shirts and 2 pairs of designer heels. SO if your looking to SELL, I would shop around first before settling on Platos Closet. They are very picky with the clothes they take but yet when walking thru the store I saw many older looking shirts that I wonder how or why they bought them. Saying that Plato's Closet is better than Lawrence's Arizona Trading Company is kind of like saying that an ice cream sundae is better than going for a root canal. No duh. *Most* things are better than the ATC here, up to and possibly including that root canal I mentioned. But Plato's Closet doesn't just win by default. They're getting four stars because they deserve 'em. I went in to kill time a couple of days ago, the same night as the hair disaster at Beauty Brands. I should know by now that "killing time" at a clothing store means spending money. But I guess at least I did it at a consignment shop where things are cheaper, right? I walked out of the store with a new black and white hoodie, a Sonic the Hedgehog t-shirt (yessssssss!), a Pink Floyd t-shirt, a new wallet, a chunky floral-printed bangle bracelet, and an awesome pair of Gap jeans. All of it ran me just over $50 with tax. The jeans were definitely the star purchase. I ALWAYS have trouble with Gap denim. I have what is colloquially known as "junk in the trunk," so finding a pair of jeans that fits my waist AND my butt, all while flattering my lower region and passing the bend-over test is nearly impossible with them. These ones fit comfortably, look great, and don't give me plumber's crack. Oh, and they cost a whopping $15, about a third of what they'd cost brand new. Win, win, and WIN. Of course, being a consignment shop, the stock rotates daily. You'd have to show up pretty frequently to catch all the great deals. But I was pleased with the selection they had that day, especially in sizes larger than small. (Why is it that the tiny clothes are always the largest selection at a consignment shop? Are the bigger girls just hoarding all their old clothes, or what? Sharing is caring, you guys.) The staff was friendly and attentive and pointed me in the right direction when I had trouble navigating their crazy layout, which is necessary here. My biggest beef with the store is their system for organizing women's tops. They have them spread out over literally half the store, with no apparent rhyme or reason to how they've set them out. Who has time to sift through fifty different racks looking for their size? Not me, that's who. read more

If you are looking for cheap clothes in pretty good condition, this is a better choice than Goodwill or the Salvation Army. They always have really cute shoes too! My only complaint is that they are VERY picky about the clothes they buy back, so be sure to only bring back clothes that are fresh presses, in great condition and in the most trendy styles and the trades-ins for store credit are your best bet. read more

At this time the worker named Erin with the snake tattoo on her wrist tapped on the sign abruptly and said to my face "this register is closed I wasn't just ignoring you" in a very rude tone and proceeded to walk away. At this time she was talking to another employee and said "can those girls not read, the sign is obviously in front of the register. This place is not consistent with their buying process...you can take a bag of clothes in and either will sell for less than 5 cents on the dollar or get denied BUT someone who looks more trendy comes in with the same bag or worse clothing and gets offered a lot more. The employees are snobby and 1 in particular wears shorts that are completely inappropriate to work in unless your a stripper or work at hooters. Their prices in the clothes are cheaper than most of the other second hand stores but that is the only plus. read more

I'd give them higher stars if they'd figure out a new organization system for their tops. They mostly have the dresses and skirts color coded, so why can't they color code their tops AND organize them into various categories? If I'm on the prowl for a wrap, sweater, vest or tube top, I'd rather not swim through thousands (probably not exaggerating here) of tops before I find one. They have everything you need/want and it's all in great condition with the exception of shoes--they could be better but that's harder to do unless they buy from people who only wore their shoes out once. Jeans, dresses, and skirts are easy to navigate, but tops are a mess. They have a TON of amazing clothes, but if you're searching for a particular top you should plan to stay there for a few hours. I really hope the head honchos re-organize womens tops. It will no doubt take many hours of labor but the store could earn more profit once they have a new system going. There have been so many times I wanted to go to Plato's to pick up a new shirt, but it's too overwhelming to even try. Other comments: This isn't a good store to shop if you're a larger woman. Okay, so I just went in to this store today to sell some of the plethora of relatively new clothes that I never got around to wearing. First of all, the box of clothing I brought in contained about 40 items, all relatively in good shape. I understood that some were outdated (I didn't expect them to take all of them; I figured it was worth a shot), but thought they'd take at least 10 items or so. I come back (10 minutes later mind you) and the guy at the counter says that they've already gone through ALL of my stuff, and brought the box over. They only took one item out of the entire stack. ONE ITEM. It wouldn't have confused me so much if I hadn't just seen a lot of very similar clothing while browsing the store while waiting. I literally had a brand new Hollister shirt, brand new American Eagle tank top, two pairs of American Eagle jeans, etc., all of which I paid quite a bit for in that box. The same guy at the counter told me that the reason they only took one item (one pair of the American Eagle jeans) is because that some of the clothes were "over a year and a half old." I'm sorry, the pair of jeans that they JUST purchased from me were over 3 years old, yet a majority of the stuff that they seemed to have miraculously gone over in less than 10 minutes was LESS than a year and half old, and in very good condition. Like I said, I didn't expect them to take all of the clothes, just some of them. At least Goodwill is going to be enjoying some very nice clothes. The only reason I didn't give this place one star is because the selection is quite large and the prices are pretty reasonable, though I prefer Arizona Trading Company. read more

This place gets three stars because it's run well and the staff is very friendly and attentive. Consignment shop employees can be real salty and the cheerfulness of the woman and man working was not lost on me. I found nothing here - I'm more of a weird vintage/things your mom cast off hunter and the selection tends towards the preppy or more straight forward Target shopper. There is a lot on the racks from Forever 21 and a few isolated sections of garments strictly from Urban Outfitters, etc. It would be a good spot for younger girls/high schoolers for sure. read more

HORRIBLE customer service. The girls were rude. They refused to buy name brand clothing in perfect condition yet I pulled multiple items off their shelves and showed them the horrible condition it was in. There were also Walmart brand clothing in there that was 2x the amount it is at Walmart. I was discussed with the service and will NOT be back. This was not the first time I have been treated poorly by their employees. Not happy at all. They have refused to buy clothes from lots of people I know but it seems if you are their "friend" they will take whatever piece of crap you bring in. I have gone to Plato's closet several times over the years to sell the clothes I won't wear anymore (or simply because I can no longer fit anything into my closets.) I always like to stay on trend so when I go in to Plato's, they are usually excited at the higher end and designer goods I have to sell. I usually leave with a few hundred dollars of cash in hand. I was not in Lawrence for the day and had a few bags of designer goods that are in perfect condition, seasonally relevant, and still on trend. I walked in and even though I was the only one in the store and there were two girls at the front counter, It took 10 minutes for anyone to acknowledge my presence. It's not as if I was walking around out of sight from the front counter- I was literally right in front of them. Once they finally decided to pay attention to their customer, I was told that it would be about a two hour wait- which is typical since I had a few bags with me. I was told I could leave the store, but I stuck around and shopped for a bit. I watched the associate throw around the clothes, failing to look at any of the detailing or condition of the clothes as ALL Plato's closets in my past experiences have. After thirty minutes she called me over and said that they could not take anything because it all looked too worn. Despite the fact that MOST of the clothes still had tags on them and the other selections had been worn maybe once, she seemed irritated at my very existence and dismissed me. I made a comment saying "Even though you are wrong in your assessment of the condition of my clothes, you must realize that this is a used clothing store... so used or worn clothes are to be expected." Again. The tags remained on a large percentage of the 50+ items I brought into this location. It's sad to say but Plato's has lost my business. Continue to sell your american eagle button ups with pit stains to high heavens and ignore the brand new designer wear (Armani, Dolce and Gabanna, Oscar de la Renta, to name a few) that I brought into you. What a pathetic way to treat your customers. Do NOT go to this location. Do NOT give them your time or money. It is a horribly ran business with even more horrible associates. read more

Everything was fine until we went to check out. Our friend had a coupon and I simply asked the cashier if we could buy our clothes together to so we would me the requirements of the coupon ($5 off $25 or more). She sighed loudly and rolled her eyes at us and told us that "that defeats the purpose of what we're trying to do here. but I guess I'll allow it." She treated us like we were a nuisance and that she didn't want us in the store. My friends and I are all managers in retail ourselves and agreed that this woman's response was rude and unprofessional. Working in retail, I understand that making exceptions to policies is never fun, however I was not throwing a fit about any policy, I simply asked a question on whether or not we were aloud to purchase our items together. That is a question, not a demand. The owner then proceeded to write back on our reviews (left on another app) that we were lying about her behavior and that the employee was being nice in letting us use the coupon. Letting your customers use a coupon does not make up for disrespectful behavior. This girl was treating us like we were hammering her about this coupon when I had only asked once. I would have much rather heard something along the lines of "no, I'm sorry, but that's against our policy. the coupon has to be used by the one who it was given to," than a snappy "I GUESS I'll allow it, even though it defeats the purpose," followed by a poor manager with passive aggressive comments on reviews. Advice to management: take a chill pill, and reevaluate how you treat your customers. read more

Once and a while can find pretty great deals at Platos. But when I brought in clothes to sell that was a whole different experience. Having shopped many times there I had a pretty good idea what they typically carry and look for. I figured not all my items would be taken but a least a good number or a few. But this was not the case. Even a romper I bought just last summer from Urban Outfitters, that I wore once, they didn't take. None of my clothes were fade or in bad condition as they are all items I wore twice or less hence why I wanted to sell back...they are awfully picky. And yet I saw faded and worse condition items hanging on their racks. Even saw a sweater that was a different color of one I tried donating but they didn't take that either.. read more

My girlfriend went in and was looking at the "designer" purses they had on display behind the register on the top shelf. Obviously they wanted to separate those from the rest of the purses because they were more expensive. My girlfriend had her eye on a coach purse priced at $80 but instead bought clothes that day for around 70 bucks. She went in the next day to buy the purse as she decided she wanted it. Upon buying it we looked online and it turned out they sold her a fake Coach purse. Not only would they not give hermoney back but made her get store credit for the 87 dollars she spent. Now she esentially spent 150 bucks for five things. Terrible business to put a fake purse on sale with a real price. ridiculous. read more

I went to platos to buy some clothing and sell a pair of jeans that I purchased from diesel that I hadn't even worn. I didnt find any clothing that I like and when they called me up they only wanted to give me $20!! are you kidding me??!!
