I truly believe this is one of the best animal shelters I've ever visited and had the opportunity to work with. The staff works hard to help them flourish and thrive, giving each one the best possible chance of finding a forever home. The team is experienced, dedicated, and many of them have been here for years. Their knowledge and commitment are evident in the care they provide every day. I also love that they offer spay and neuter services. Helping prevent unwanted litters is one of the most effective ways to reduce the overwhelming number of kittens entering shelters and, in the long term, helps decrease the need for euthanasia. I highly recommend supporting or adopting from this shelter. They also accept donations, which directly help provide food, medical care, and other essentials for animals who desperately need it. I just adopted a dog from there and I am happy that I adopted him but I was reading other comments and I seen some other people have this problem as well but I adopted my dog with WORMS and just very unfortunate because he had them at the shelter and I'm not sure if they just don't monitor the dogs pooping or what he is severely dehydrated constantly drinking water and scratching his butt on the floor, very uncomfortable for him and just wish it was treated at the shelter before I got him, he has really bad dry skin and I know they probably don't wash dogs there but I can't wash him yet either since they neutered him the day after I adopted him. If I could leave a zero-star review, I would. I want to spread awareness: Plano Animal Services killed my dog, Bella. Bella was a 12-year-old German Shepherd. She ran away from home and ended up in the shelter for about a week. Because of whatever policies Plano has, they spayed her. Bella was 11, and it is incredibly high-risk to alter dogs at that age. Because of that decision, a few weeks later, Bella developed cancer. We took her to the vet to get checked out, and they told us how much the cancer treatment would cost. They also confirmed that when you spay older dogs like this, they are at a very high risk of developing cancer. Ultimately, she died. I had to put her down because she was in so much pain. Mark my words, Plano Animal Services, karma will come for you. May Bella rest in peace. I will never forgive y'all. Bella was healthy. She was my childhood dog, and I had her ever since I was almost 7 years old. This is long but please read this if you're thinking of surrendering ANY dog to this shelter. I'd rate this place negative 5 stars if I could. These guys have zero remorse or empathy. I surrendered my dog Praedyth on December 2nd after an apartment I was going to live in said they don't allow large breed dogs. The absolute fool I was I decided to give him up to this shelter thinking he'd adjust and be able to be adopted. Well, after just 2 days I called them on the status of his adoption and he was already deemed unadoptable! 2 days! He's never been in a shelter and was always free to roam the inside of the house and out! He has dogs around him Barking making him on edge of course he won't adjust or pass their test after this short amount of time. So after a whole 2 hour conversation my mom decided he can stay at her home. I cannot describe the joy I felt at this point. I was going to save my baby. I called them to let them know we can care for him. He can come to where he's comfortable and loved until I find an apartment that allows large dogs... Guess what their response to all this was? "NOPE! He's too dangerous we're gonna euthanize him anyway." Are you kidding me? You're going to kill him because he isn't use to being in a shelter surrounded by death and FILLED with anxiety? This is no monster. He's no menace to society. He's scared and for good reason: YOURE GOING TO KILL HIM! I got in touch with the director and he did not care for anything I had to say. This is a man who probably put down so many dogs he's numb to it, you can hear it in his voice. This is a business not a daycare for dogs and I get that but Jesus man have mercy on my boy. He saved my life when I attempted suicide. He sat on my chest and screamed so loud the neighbors heard and called the police. I would not be here if this "menace" didn't save me. He said on the phone that me and my mom would have to sign a liability waiver and said if he bites someone it's going to be automatically a FELONY for both of us. He also said we'd have to get a prepaid training receipt for aggression training. When I walk him on the Arbor Hills nature preserve trail he is not aggressive to other people and never has been. He has gotten loose twice and has never bit anyone. He even let someone knock on our door right next him to let us know he's outside trying to get back in. And the last and absolute worse is that he stated he needs to talk to my mother's landlord letting him know the dog is aggressive? He knows how that conversation would go. That goes for any landlord because then they'd have to get insurance that covers attack breeds or aggressive dogs. What landlord is going to walk out of that conversation saying "yes they can stay". Infact the director knew this so much that he said DONT do anything else until he talks to the landlord. Why? Because it would be a waste of effort. My dog is doomed. I should not have brought him to this shelter. He's 5 years old and would have spent his last 5 years being loved and cared for had I not brought him to this shelter and went with a rescue group. If you bring your dog here expecting them to be rehomed, don't bother. Either they'll fit right into the shelter and get adopted (hopefully) OR they'll be terrified of this place and be put down. No inbetween. They won't even let him lay on my lap one last time UPDATE: after finding a home of someone who is more than willing to take him AND is their own landlord the director himself shot the idea down. Effectively killing my dog. Again, this is not the actions of someone who has the animals well-being in mind and should be removed from his position. Any other shelter would have worked with me to bring him home but I brought him to the one shelter in Texas that prefers killing than saving. Do not bring your animals here. I adopted a dog that was so sick, she could barely walk. They had her for weeks and let her suffer

I adopted a cat here, and as part of the adoption process he was neutered the day that I picked him up. Turns out he had been pretty sick before, which I saw and asked whether he could handle surgery but I had no idea how bad it was. The people helping me fill out the forms assured me that they would not do surgery if he couldn't handle the anesthesia. I had to euthanize my cat after having him for 3 days. Just be careful about the condition of the pet you are trying to adopt and I would not recommend letting their vet preform surgery(ei if you adopt try adopting a pet that has already been spayed/neutered) read more

Plano Animal Shelter Review If I could give zero stars, I would. My experience at the Plano Animal Shelter yesterday was nothing short of a nightmare, thanks to Officer Pope. I went to the shelter around 2:30 PM to surrender a dog I rescued off the side of the road in October--a sweet dog named Blue. Losing my job right after Christmas and facing eviction has left me in a heartbreaking position where I can no longer care for him, and I wanted to ensure he had a chance at a better life. Instead of offering compassion or understanding, Officer Pope decided to treat me with nothing but disdain and condescension. From the moment I stepped in, she was rude and dismissive, making me feel like a monster for trying to do the right thing for Blue. But the worst part? She confiscated my ID without justification, refused to give it back, and then, shockingly, took a photo of me on her personal phone. Let me repeat that: she took my photo on her personal phone. I can't even begin to describe how violating and unprofessional that felt. When I demanded my ID back, she sneered, made snide remarks, and outright refused until I threatened to call the police. It wasn't until I dialed 911 (yes, I had to call 911 at an animal shelter!) that I finally received assistance--from the dispatcher, not Officer Pope. It was not until the police got called that my ID was returned to me. This is not just bad customer service; this is a flagrant abuse of authority. Officer Pope clearly has no business working with the public, let alone in a position that requires compassion and professionalism. I went to the shelter seeking help for my dog, who deserves better than homelessness, and instead, I left feeling humiliated and dehumanized. The staff is horrible and lazy. The first time I was there, I donated some sheets and towels and the front desk ladies were rude. I haven't been back until today when I wanted to look to adopt a cat since my other cat passed away. I went down on Thursday mid afternoon there was no one in the shelter but me all the ladies on the front desk. Just sit on their asses looking at the phone when I ask questions about searching cats at the window they just respond. I don't know or didn't even offer to show me or give me any information about the Cats that I was interested in since they were too busy to be on their cell phones are on their computer. I really don't understand these negative reviews. This is the best shelter I've ever been to. After reading the negative reviews it sounds like maybe their protocol wasn't communicated or maybe understood effectively. This shelter houses their animals in the most humane way I've ever seen. They also were incredibly informative about each dog I inquired about to ensure I found the best match possible. I spent about an hour waking through, asking questions, playing with the ones I was looking at in their awesome outside play pins to find the one I was looking for. I couldn't be happier with my new fur baby and this shelter and their employees for making sure I had all of the info possible to make the best choice! Myself and this little girl were so happy to have found each other! They even made sure she had toys a harness and leash to go home with! Thank you PAS! Y'all were amazing! Love the pets - not the management. The mission is great, and a few good people there. The Manager and a few others are tyrants and worth zero stars. I'm 63 w/ cancer and diabetes. AS A VOLUNTEER I stopped scraping and cleaning out dog poop to take a 2 to 3 minute TOPS break and drink some soda. By the 3rd minute while I'm still sipping my soda the Mgr while working his a** off SITTING opening dog toy plastic bags (NOT!) is asking me "don't you have something to do?" Plano Animal Shelter would rather see good, young, healthy dogs euthanized and dead by their own hand than adopted out to loving homes. Today I drove 15 miles one way to check out two blue heelers. When I got there and saw them I decided to ask for a 1 on 1. Upon asking, I was told I would have to prove experience with the breed. No problem, I have one already, and have specialized in training border collies and blue heelers for half of my life (15+ years). I showed her the paperwork with my dogs name and breed, which was not good enough for her because it had my husbands name on it. No problem, I'll run down to the vet and have them change it... Next she asked where we lived and I stated we own a condo. The woman at the desk magically morphed into a real estate agent and knew more about my living situation than I do! She aggressively stated "absolutely no heelers if you have shared walls!". I adopted a love bug from them. Technically, it's a pitbull terrier but a love bug is a good description of him. The folks up at the shelter were really helpful and patient with me during the adoption process. Blue came down with a respiratory infection and was in isolation for 12 days or so. Then I adopted him but he had to stay until he was neutered which was like six days. During that whole time, I visited Blue everyday and the people there were kind enough and patient enough to put up with me visiting Blue. It's such a sad sight to see so many animals there. If you're looking for a pet, give them a look see. Maybe you'll find a great companion that turns into a love bug like mine. read more

I got my puppy from there a few days ago. Please note that when your adopted animal is spayed or neutered here prior to release, THEY DO NOT GIVE PAINKILLERS OR ANTIBIOTICS. Your animal will be in distress and pain. My dog was in decent shape and then suddenly became very anxious and upset, started having rancid diarrhea and threw up . I had to sit up with her through the night and take her to the vet the next day. He prescribed two antibiotics and a painkiller for my girl. I'm not saying to not adopt from here, but please take any animal you adopt from here to the vet IMMEDIATELY. Also ask for MEDICAL RECORDS prior to adoption. I was not told that my dog was sick in the shelter. She had diarrhea prior to me even adopting her, and it was NEVER mentioned. Can even visit with a dog unless you go thru a whole proces which i didn't use to have to do for the past 12 years i have lived here. I wanted to visit with the same dogs i had seen the previous week before i went out of town for the holiday, however i had no time to visit with them that day i came back today. All of the sudden theres a whole process to just visiting a dog with all these questions. On top of that they single out pit bulls for some reason while half the dogs there are pit bulls. All for nothing when if i had the chance to visit them just a couple of weeks ago i would have had an entire interrogation just to try to visit with theses sweet babies, i dont even know if i was going to end up adopting them hence the visiting with theses dogs. Without a doubt my favorite animal shelter I have been too. This place is clean and nice and the animals are well cared for. They also have plenty of staff and volunteers that it does not feel overwhelming even when you catch them at a busy time. There are also plenty of visiting areas where you can get acquainted with your potential adoptee, which is nice. We are in a time when there is a lot of uncertainty in the world and that goes the same for our furry friends. Some people have had to surrender their animals to make ends meet. Very rude staff! We adopted 2 beautiful kittens from this place last year; but every visit has been stressful and nerve wrecking. We went in to adopt another kitten today. We were asked to present rabbis shot proof for our kittens. We went back with the proof and paperwork in 20 min, but we were told the kitten is on hold for someone else! This is while we were told that they do NOT hold animals for anyone, and it is first come first serve base! No explanation was given as to why they agree to hold the kitten for someone else and why they are not giving it to us for adoption. We are SPCA monthly donators. We will stop future donations to the organization until we hear back from their management at this facility and an explanation as to why we were given false information!. read more

Today we surrendered our cat that we had recently adopted. Immediately we knew she wasn't the right fit for our home after adopting her. When returning her, the male front desk clerk with a long ponytail became very defensive and tried guilting us into keeping the cat when we clearly stated that she wasn't the right fit for us. We'd rather return her sooner than later than for her to get attached to us and our home. This front desk clerk had a very bad attitude towards us and was talking to us like we were childen. We felt very disrespected and unheard. We were clear with our reasoning and he decided to then tell us that next time we adopted from a shelter we should do better. I then let him know that I have adopted 4 pets from animal shelters and understand how this works. Just because you adopt an animal doesn't mean that they are always the right fit for you. We want the cat to have the family that she deserves and can thrive in and unfortunately that was not our family. The male front desk clerk made the process of surrendering the cat extremely long and tiresome, as he kept saying he "needed more" information on why we weren't a good fit. We let him know many reasons and that wasn't good enough for him. When he decided to finally give us the paper to sign he was even rude then. He placed the surrendering paper in front of me and said sign here but when I asked him for a pen to use he just stared at me. I had to look for a pen myself since there wasn't one provided when asked. I don't recommend this shelter due the staff. I won't say all of the staff are rude but this one was in particular. Please do better as this was hard enough to do but he made the process worse. I would recommend a sensitivity class to staff as this was completely unacceptable and traumatizing. read more

I was at work and our front door latch broke and my 95 year old mom who lives with me panicked when our dogs accidentally got out. She called animal services to help . it was HORRIBLE .. they found the dogs just down the street before I could make it home. They gave us a citation and threatened they would take our dogs if they got out again. All their shots were up to date but wanted to cite me on that but they could not, gave me 1 week to go to the dept and give them money to register my house with my dogs and threatened to send me a notice to appear if I did not show up in a week and I work and have a job and its not easy to get down there that fast .. My mom of 95 called to get help and we actually got punished !! We will NEVER call them again! And am so disappointed that when reaching out to get help they took this as opportunity to threaten us, collect money from us and frankly be horrible. I participated in a volunteer community service event at the animal shelter. I really wasn't sure what to expect behind the scenes of an animal shelter, but I was very pleased by what I saw. The employees really have a genuine love and interest for the animals. They take their jobs seriously and are aware that their actions have lives in their hands. Nothing I did as a volunteer involved hands on with animals but I was still proud that my work made a difference. The facility is really clean. We sorted toys, sanitized empty cages, laundered sleep mats, picked poop from the visitation field, and cleaned the viewing windows. Our guide was sure to make ensure we followed rules to not hurt ourselves or the animals. The best part is none of the animals are ever euthanized. They can stay has long as it takes for someone to adopt them. read more

EXTREMELY RUDE on the phone. This shelter is less than 5 minutes from my house, I called them because I had found a baby squirrel at the outlet mall in Allen a little after 6pm. It was after hours, so I left a message and the called me back about an hour later. The lady told me I should have called the Allen shelter that closed at 5 pm and that Plano couldn't help me because our zip code it technically Dallas. She then threatened me that it was felony to pick up a wild animal and told me that I should have left it in that parking lot to die. We wanted to adopt a dog that was on a medical hold. We were told the dog was doing well but they wanted to keep her one more day to watch her and the next time she would be available would be the following morning. Since there were several people who wanted her and it is first come first served, I got there 2 hours before they opened the next morning to ensure I was first in line only to find out that she had actually been adopted out the afternoon before. I thought these people uncaring and lazy. I brought a little Parakeet in and turned it over. I asked to be notified in case of euthanasia as i would come back and take bird. Was told no way they could do this. Also that they might not even allow meto take bird. So next i asked for them to cover bird till the next morning. No they couldnt . Then to make matters worse the birds cage was with the cat area. Everyone knows birds die from stress. I so wished i had taken bird to Rogers Wildlife. Long story short, called the next day and poor little bird was dead. This little guy looked healthy and if he could have been covered up for a little while maybe he could have made it. I have a daily reminder of what a great place the Plano Animal Shelter is to find a loving pet. Widget, my almost four-year old kitty, was an adoptee from this facility and I've been back a couple of times in the past to try and find a playmate for her. The shelter is very clean, and the cats are in glass cages rather than those eerie prison bar type cages that are usually filthy in other facilities. When we saw her, I wasn't completely sold, but when we went into the "interview" room, she did three rounds on my lap and plopped down. She adopted me and we took her home that day :) Adopting her was easy and taking her home was even better. Such a busy place and so many animals. They keep it very clean, excellent customer service, and they care about their animals. Our experience; we were shopping for a kitty but not just any cat would do. My daughter wanted a cat that would bond with her, that special connection. This was our 5th place to check out and we visited with 5 cats before that connected was made. They were very patient with changing out the kittens until she found that special one and then allowed us to spend an hour in a conference room with the kitty while the paperwork was completed, They did not make us feel uncomfortable or anything. My only complaint would be understaffed and too few visiting rooms but since this is a city operation it should be expected that the employes are worked hard and we should be patient with them for doing this much needed job. read more

I adopted a tripod blue heeler mix from this shelter last week and couldn't be more pleased. I wanted a companion for my 2 year old blue heeler and began by looking at the shelter's website. I came across my new baby and visited the shelter a week ago today to meet the dog. When I arrived, the staff was very polite and friendly. The front area was clean and tidy. Several people mentioned in their reviews about how the shelter smells. When I was there, it did have a slight odor, but everything was clean - including all the kennel areas where the dogs are kept. Because it is an enclosed area, you have to accept that there will be a smell. The important thing is that the animals were well cared for and none of the animals were standing in their own messes. I spent some time with my guy in one of the yards in the back. He was a real sweetie, so I asked if I could bring my dog to meet him and they said yes. I brought my dog back and they hit it off. The staff was friendly, polite, and answered every question I had in a respectful and nice manner. Someone below mentioned staff who were rude - they must have gotten rid of that person because everyone I spoke with was very nice and helpful. I decided to think the adoption over and then came back on Tuesday with my dog for another meet. Again, the lady that was out in the yard with me was so nice, and seeing how long the boys got along, I decided to adopt. The fee was $80 which included neuter, shots, and heart worm testing. I think it was a very reasonable price given that all of that would have cost hundreds of dollars at a regular vet. I took my new boy to the vet the next day and the vet said he was very healthy, teeth looked great, and he got his heartworm/flea/tick preventative. I couldn't have picked a better dog. He and my boy are quickly becoming buddies and are becoming attached to one another pretty quickly. I also have experience in bringing an animal to the shelter. A few weeks ago, one of the neighborhood kids took a kitten from its mother (they were a feral cat colony), and then put it in a box with a hot dog and left in the parking lot of our apartment complex. I found the kitten and with the help of a neighbor took care of it for about a week or so while I tried to find it a home, I was unsuccessful and so brought him to the shelter. The kitten was maybe 4 weeks old and they told me that they would keep him there until he was an least two pounds and could be adopted. When I went to visit my guy before I adopted, I saw the kitten in what I would call the maternity ward/recovery room. He was sleeping soundly on a big comfy bed, looked healthy and had clearly gained weight. Needless to say I was very pleased. Definitely the cleanest, nicest and best staffed municipal animal shelter I've ever been to. They look to take as good care of the animals as they can. Nice for kids too, on the dog side the kennels are all glass which keeps barking noise at a minimum. Big dog exercise areas out back, at least 6 places to take the doggies out for fun and exercise. Good place to see some good puppers and kitties and give these guys some love, even if you're not looking to adopt. read more

I visit animal shelters in the area quite frequently to see the animals, play with them and give them much needed love and affection while they wait for their forever families to adopt them. No other animal shelter is quite as clean and well-run as this one. I adopted my sweet little Momo from here two years ago and she has been the most wonderful companion. I lost my sweet 13 yr old fur baby to lung cancer a couple months ago, she was everything to me. I have such emptiness inside since she passed and wanted to adopt a little dog I saw online at this place, intentions of saving us both. The adoption process was easy except for when signing agreements (long small lettered form) the dog was in my arms, people were piling up behind me and phones ringing, very hectic. I do remember the girl working there told me the highlights of each part to sign and said "if for any reason thing's don't work out that they will take the animal back" no problem. That was not a concern for me so I signed my name and made the hour drive back home. When we got here the dog jumped out of the car and took off running and wouldn't stop, can't really blame him though. I eventually caught him and brought him home to meet my other dog but it didn't go as expected. I decided on trying to find a good home for him but my time was running out and nobody was interested. As much as I HATED doing this, I had to return this sweet little guy to the hell I pulled him out of and I FEEL TERRIBLE STILL. When I returned him just 3 hours from when I had adopted him they wouldn't give me my $80 adoption fee back. I said well let me have him back then if that's the case ( I could have found him a home) but was told no, it's in the best interests of the dog not to return him to me and NO REFUND!! I didn't have a great experience with this shelter. I adopted a kitty from them a couple months ago. Although I am so glad I got him, I was very unimpressed with this place. When I went in to adopt the kitty, they told me he may have pulled out one of his claws because it had a sore on it. I believed them and didn't look into it further as I assumed they were telling the truth. I figured it would grow back and be fine. About a week later when it wasn't getting better but actually worse, My husband called them to see if they could do anything to help and they said they couldn't. We also reviewed the medical records we were given and they did not align with what we were told over the phone. We felt mislead and lied to. We took him to a vet and the vet told us that he actually had an abscess on his paw and was probably scratched or bitten by another cat at the shelter. She asked if they had mentioned any other incidents besides the toenail and I told her that they had not. She looked surprised. In addition, when I got kitty home, he smelled terribly. Probably one of the worst smells I've ever smelled in my life. I felt so bad for him. I hope this smell is not a reflection of how the cats are treated while in the shelter but I have some doubts. We named kitty Goose and he is one of my favorite pets I have ever had. After a bath and some tender care he is doing super well. read more

Went in there with a couple of dogs in mind that I wanted to adopt. The people that worked there did everything in their power to dissuade me from adopting those dogs and instead tried to get me to take dogs "THEY" thought I should take. This was a while back but still makes me wonder how many dogs at this place could have been adopted and given good homes instead are blocked by the people that work there. This is the opposite of what should be happening. I adopted a dog from Operation Kindness and had a much better experience. read more

My current dog passed in February of 2013, and I swore I wasn't going to get another I just could not go through that heartbreak again. But low and behold, I found myself browsing through the Plano Animal Shelters website and found my puppy..Such a sweet baby and hesitated for two months until my kids decided it was time for another. They knew exactly which one..and he was adopted and BROUGHT back..I could never do that to a dog no matter what..I soon found out why. After we got him he was a little on the skinny side but no matter, I was going to put some weight on him. But then I noticed he had just awful sessions when going to the bathroom #2 and had to do something about it. My daughter finally took him to the vet and he had a tapeworm..and he was severly dehydrated..this just 3 days after we had him..needless to say, we got him all his medications and got him back to health, but what kind of conditions must the animal shelter have if the dogs come out like this? Someone needs to look into sanitation and such. I would never trade my dog for anything, but please if you are going to adopt out pets, please make sure they are healthy. read more

Visited this facility n Plano a few times. They have a wide selection of dogs available for adoption. Staff were attentive and we had no Issues during our visitations. It can get busy especially on the weekends. Adoption fees are more than fair and the staff really work hard to cater to the animals. read more

Very incompetent staff. Save yourself the time and look elsewhere for a pet. We adopted a pet, filled out the paperwork and everything. We were told we had to wait 2 days for "processing". On the day of pickup, we were told our pet was just given away to another family!!! read more

You need to get your forever pet here. We have gotten two cats here 12 years apart but well worth it. When our cat wandered away one night and didn't come home we went to the shelter to see if had been picked up. No luck. So after a few months we decided to get another one and lucky us. The animals are all fixed and treated. After adoption take the pet the vet for a complete checkup as the shelter only does neutering. read more

I stopped by on Saturday to look at a dog I had seen on pet finder. This place is the worst I have seen. The poor animals are subject to the nastiest cages. I saw many dogs that had been playing, laying in a pen that had feces everywhere. I saw one person attempting to go around to clean but with the number of animals there I would suggest having more than 1. I really hope the City of Plano sees these bad reviews and take action. I know these animals are strays or surrendered but that does not mean they have to be in such a horrible environment. Come on Plano you can do better! read more
