I have no previous memories of Africa.. now after visiting Memories of Africa, Peri Peri chili…read morepowder and Beef Biltong now will be always at the back of my mind. Beef Biltong supposed to be a South African delicacy with beef air dried instead of smoked to create that unique taste and texture... (and the addition seasoning of Peri Peri sure helps with the taste!) My friend at first was really skeptical... since the Beef Biltong in the fridge looks not too appetizing but after she start eating that, she could not stop!... Beef Biltong is something that you have to eat every single bites of it before you can stop, that is addictive! There are also bottles of condiments, sauces, seasonings that are all from South Africa... which is quite unique and you cannot find in a supermarket near you! The store is nicely maintained, the store owner is so so nice... asked me if I want a cookie... hey not going to say no... yes please!

During my Summer search for the African Bird's Eye Chili more popularly known as Peri Peri, I came…read moreacross the Memories of Africa website. It was with that search that I found there is limited supply of South African foods and basically no authentic restaurants available derived from that region. Btw, Moroccan and Ethiopian are not of that region. The same search of Peri Peri lead me to find South African specialties such as Boerwors(Farmer's Sausage) and Biltong(Cured Meat). While there might be a handful within the GTA and surrounding areas, this location is the closest and most convenient for me. This is not a large shop by any means as they do sales on their website but if you do come by, the friendly owner is there to greet you. Inside is a lightly African themed shop that consists mostly of Can, Dry, Package Goods. They are mostly unique as to your local Grocery Store probably will not stock the same items. Most noticeable was a Spillers Peri Peri Oil, the Freezer of Boerwors, Fridge of Biltongs, Mrs H. S. Ball's Chutneys, and a good selection of Candies and Chocolates. Florence Meats Peri Peri Biltong($6.50/100g) tasted like Jerky Beef except it's cut thin and against the grain with flakes of Peri Peri for flavour. As with any Jerky Beef it can get addiction as a snack and noted by a friend it tasted like Chinese Cured Meat.

My girlfriend and I ordered the Perri Perri chicken bowls and there was barely any chicken, I thought it was joke, and no flavour whatsoever. Also the salad we had ordered had a good taste but was not fresh at all. And as for the service the hostess that greeted us was not great and gave us strange looks when we ordered. Do not recommend this location anymore, but I still have hope for the other locations.

They bring it to you when it's ready (it took about 10 minutes). I ordered a 1/2 chicken with mild sauce and corn on the cob as my side. The chicken was just okay ... kind of on the small side. The corn was just okay too ... it seemed like it had been soaking in water for a while and then put on the grilled to heat it up and char. The staff weren't very friendly.

One word of advice. Check your receipt to see if you paid the correct amount…read more I noticed later that the online menu and the in restaurant screen said 15.99 whereas my receipt said 16.99. When I confronted the cashier about it, he said the computer said 16.99 and it's the most updated price. If the computer said 1000 dollars, am I supposed to pay 1000 dollars? The agreed contract price is 15.99 and that should be that. Later the cashier went to the back (assuming to talk to the manager/owner), and he gave me back a loonie (technically it should have been 1.13, but whatever). This place chose to use metal utensils instead of single use ones. The knife he gave me was quite disgustingly dirty (see pic). The food itself was decent. And for the amount of food, the price is very reasonable. I got the Raven Platter. My friend's fish platter was also decent, but looking at the texture and color, we couldn't tell if it was cooked thoroughly or not. We chose to keep eating and hope for the best. I finished most of my food, but I couldn't really comfortably eat all of the food, not knowing whether the plate or anything else they used was really clean to begin with. I'll come back and edit the review should anything happen :/ We probably should have brought up the price discrepancy issue AFTER we got our food. Needless to say, not gonna come back. Quality: 6/10. Service: 3/10. Value: 7/10. Overall: 3.5/10 (Not an average).

I had the fish platter (12.99) and while good I really don't cared for the cheap standard restaurant options of flavourless tilapia or basa fillets. I would have preferred another option such as salmon. I had the peri rice which is a type of spiced rice and a side salad. The salad was good quality as it contained spinach , tomatoes and cucumbers along with the iceberg. They have a veggie burger which I will try next time. I also appreciate the variety of sides you can get including potatoes or corn. The peri sauce was very spicy and I enjoyed it. Great hours (close at 12am fri & sat) so perfect when its a late night and you are at a loss for food options ). Will be back soon to try other menu items. Can get busy here so try to call ahead. I didn't give it 5 stars because of a couple reasons: if you're in a hurry it's not a good choice. The food is fresh and fresh takes time. The seating isn't great. There are a couple bar type places to sit but wouldn't be suitable for people with physical disabilities. Also, there is no available washroom on site so you cannot wash your hands or otherwise. Drinks are cans or bottles, no fountain drinks. No gluten free options. Overall the food is absolutely delicious. A good choice to take with you to the park or an outdoor seating area!

I chose the quarter chicken (leg) meal with coleslaw and Peri rice. It had a really nice flavour but the pieces were really small and not cut properly (on the joint). They gave me two leg quarters to compensate for the small size. The rice and coleslaw portions were quite generous. Overall, the food tasted pretty good. The service, however, lacked some finesse. The person who took my order seemed rushed. The person who brought my order to the table seemed inexperienced. He had to return with cutlery, again with coleslaw, again with condiments, and again with my drink. Hopefully, this will improve over time. The bottles of sauces and the tables were obviously not wiped clean after the last customer. Although the food was pretty good, the presentation could have been better. The chicken and rice were just thrown on the plate, kinda like what you'd do at home. Nicer plating would have made it look more appealing, especially since we eat with our eyes first. If less than average service and plating don't bother you, then their chicken is definitely worth trying. It was really good.
