I was looking for reclaimed wood for a small home project (floating shelves). I had found a few vendors through web searches but my order was just too small, so I resorted to Craigslist and saw a posting for reclaimed wood by Larry. He was really responsive and thorough in his answers to a novice DIY-er and said they had a whole yard full of reclaimed wood that I could browse to find what I was looking for. When I googled them, a cute red barn came up as the company photo so I figured I would give it a go--and I was just amazed by their showroom! Their website doesn't do them justice and you just have to go in-person; there were chandeliers, sconces, tables, chairs, mirrors, and more (oh my!)... all of it vintage. (I'm regretting not taking any pictures to include with this post.) Additionally, Simon and Larry were so helpful and easy to work with and they were not patronizing at all. Placemakers has so many cool things to choose from...and Larry and the rest of the staff was super helpful and fun! We personally went there to get reclaimed wood to make shelves for our remodeled kitchen. Super great deal! We were able to make six floating shelves out of one piece of reclaimed wood we purchased. Saved us about $400 from the ones we were looking at big box commercial stores. It's difficult not to get distracted with all the other cool stuff they have. We had a phenomenal experience at PlaceMakers. My husband and I are adding shelves to an alcove and wanted reclaimed wood. Larry helped us from start to finish. He asked questions to understand our project including budget, amount of wood needed, etc. Then he helped us target our search of their extensive selection of reclaimed wood to what would work well aesthetically and for our budget. Super cool stuff. Everything comes from demolition of high end houses. Reclaimed wood, doors, fixtures and nick knacks the have an alternate use. Hugh yard of reclaimed wood of all types. Larry was very helpful, he moved wood so we could see the pieces underneath and made suggestions. We found the perfect piece for our mantle. He even trimmed the end for us. Beautiful old growth redwood with bits of faded paint. When the projects done I'll post a photo. What a find!!! read more

We are doing work on our 1908 (or is it 1913?) Craftsman and needed some more trim pieces. I was delighted to learn about Placemakers, who had 100 year old fir from a Pacific Heights house (at half the cost of new wood). I bought every fir 1 X 6 that they had and wish they had just a bit more. The wood is gorgeous, you just can't find grain like that anymore. Larry helped me and he was delightful.
