We used to live in this area. I lived in the area for 8 years and my wife lived here for much longer than I did. I do not remember ever getting a regular pizza from the pizza wagon. I've tried a lot of pizza. Whatever they use for the sauce and homemade dough makes this the best pizza that I've ever eaten. It's so damn good. When you pull up the place doesn't seem much and never has been. It's an add on to a house and has been like this for years. Also note they only take cash. No credit cards are accepted. Burnt coal black pizza. Most ridiculous thing that anybody ever put in a box. Charred to the point it stunk up our house. Someone tried to cut this thing and couldn't. They knew what they were giving us and that's what is most disturbing. Two months prior we ordered two Italian hoagies. The slimy meat was stuck to the old bun and topped off with very brown lettuce. Not sure about the new pizza but the old pizza was amazing and was an institution in these parts. I grew up on it every time we came to grandmas this was waiting for us along with the smapler platter. I'm talking over 30 years of enjoying this pizza. Thick crust, sweet sauce and perfect pepperonis curled up just enough to hold that delicious grease. The sampler platter (which is apparently no more... HEARTBREAK) was filled with wings, fried veggies, perogies, onion rings and fried zucchini and a bunch of sauces. It was incredible honestly. We use to bring frozen pizzas home to Southern Maryland to enjoy. Loved loved loved this place I hope the new owners capture some of that magic. read more

Pizza Wagon is an unsatisfactory small town business. As of October 30, 2021 my family and I called to purchase two pizzas, fried jalapeño poppers and sugar dough balls. The gentleman whom picked up the phone was unprofessional from the start of the conversation to the moment he hung up on me. I asked for one of the pizzas to be made with longhorn cheese and pepperoni. The gentleman rudely interrupted me and advised me he will not be making any fried foods and/or the second pizza. He then disconnected the call. I returned the call to ask for a manager. The woman that picked up advised she was the manager. I asked whom the gentleman was, she said her husband. I proceeded to tell her how rude he was. She of course advised me they was busy and began making excuses for his actions. All in all I wouldn't recommend Pizza Wagon from this point on to anyone and/or will call to purchase another pizza from them as long as they are in business. Don't waste your time or hard earned money on them. They are not worth it. The Route 40 Diner pizza is very similar and cost less. Thanks. read more

My wife grew up nearby, and got me hooked on this pizza. We live in Columbus, OH now, and whenever we go back to visit family, we pick up a couple of pre-bake pizzas to take back to Ohio. 18-20 minutes at 375, and it's like we picked it up straight from Pizza Wagon. We've tried to analyze what makes this pizza so great. The crust is simple but thick. The sauce is thick and sweet. The cheese has just the right amount of chew. This small but noble establishment has been nestled in rural Laurel mountain foothills since 1967. My parents used to come here when they were dating, they brought me here as a baby, and we still get pizza here every time I come home to visit from Seattle as a 42 year old. It tastes the same every single time and that is an amazing small comfort in a world that changes so swiftly in so many ways. We buy three or four pizzas each time. It is simple and delicious; it melts in your mouth. We always sit in the parking lot and have one or two slices right when we get it, before we drive home. They'll give you paper plates and napkins and there is an old time pop machine that still takes quarters right in front. We always make sure to vent the boxes while we eat; it's tradition. The crust is thick and fluffy. The sauce is sweet. The cheese is that old school mozzarella and the pepperoni are those little circles we all remember that get all oily and crispy just the right way. This little place has been making the same recipe since opening in '67! While the 'traditional' crust is similar to sicilian, they DO make a thin crust also. The menu includes salads, appetizers, homemade potato chips, desserts like fried dough, and apple or cherry filled pockets. The prices haven't been raised in 4 years, and the quality of the cheese and pepperoni is unmatched by competitor brands. Actually, the pepperoni is a 'table' pepperoni which is slice on the premises! The staff is knowledgeable about all the menu items, and they have a 'Frequent Buyer' card...Yeah, the sauce is on the sweet side, as opposed to a sour or spicy one. Pizza Wagon has been open almost my entire life, so it's been there as long as I can remember. When I was growing up, my parents would get 2 pizzas, and they'd give us a stack of napkins, knowing we'd start eating it in the car. When I was a teen, in the 1980s, some of my best dates consisted of ordering a Pizza Wagon pizza and sitting in the small gravel parking lot, not just to wait on it, but also to eat it, listening to the radio and talking in between bites. There was never any left to take home. And there were often other couples doing the same, even though it's not a drive in. When I moved away from Pennsylvania after college, my mother knew what to have waiting on the table for me when I visited back home, especially for my birthday. She made the mistake once of making a pot roast, and cried real tears when I hopped back in the car to hit Pizza Wagon instead. I'm not alone among the other people I grew up around. As these kinds of places are often described, this is one of those "hole in the wall" places that locals swear by, and outsiders either love or hate, but their opinions don't matter to us at all. There's a reason this place is still running, despite having only one location, way out in the countryside, not easily located by outsiders, having survived the passing of the original ownership. I'm sure there are people who don't like it - you don't have a choice of crusts or sauces, the latter of which you get plenty. I've taken some Pizza Wagon pizza to friends in other cities in other states where I've lived as an adult, and found it's like Iron City Beer, it's an acquired taste. I love the soft, thick crust, and sweet, plentiful sauce. I love love love their pepperoni, and how it makes little cups when it cooks. It's always been that way. They have branched out in recent years to add salads, hoagies and sides. I've enjoyed the ones I've had, so has my family. I'm not sure if they still offer the pieroghi pizza, but where else are you going to get that? I thought I'd hate it, my sister made me try it, it was really good. I only have one minor complaint, I've mentioned to them, but you'd have to have been going there more than 25 years to know this: back in the day, when you had to specifically order cheese as a topping or you wouldn't get any, they would put a slab of cheese down the middle of each slice. They have a new cheese vendor now, and can't do that, even if you offer to bring them your own cheese. Apparently, I wasn't the only person to ask about this, ownership told me they get that request from time to time. But that's just nostalgia, it has nothing to do with Pizza Wagon's competency. The only sad thing, for me, is that there will always be only one Pizza Wagon, and despite being back in the area for several years now, I've unexpectedly lost most of the family members who made coming home worth the trip, so when I move again, I might not be back again for more.
