Really bummed. Just moved to Groton were looking for a new regular pizza place for us to frequent. It was Friday night, the take out window was very busy but their was only 1 other table besides us. It was so hot in there we were sweating just sitting. Our waitress was nice just unorganized. It took a half hour to get our drinks, then she forgot she didn't take our order. Trying not to walk out 20 mins later she took it but forgot my sons entree. We ordered apps but everything came out all at once leaving no room at the table. Pizza palace is the place to be. I can't get over their nice crunchy yet soft crust. It's crazy good! They also have some great subs. I will say, I ordered a vegetarian sub and it only had cheese tomato and shredded lettuce--not sure if that was a mistake or that's how they do it, but it's quite odd. Was looking for a nearby and not too expensive place for me and Dad on Father's Day. Eggplant grinder was decent, but I was disappointed that the eggplant wasn't breaded and it had very little sauce on it. Pizza was non-descript, no flavor. Ordered a small white pizza; this was nothing like a white pizza. No garlic, no ricotta. They just left the sauce off. Crust very ordinary; I don't think they know anything about pizza. I read about the excellent tuna grinder, so I may try that. My advice: go to an Italian place if you want good Italian food! read more

My wife and I have been going there for about 50 years. One of our favorite things to get is the tuna grinder. Back in the early days at their old location, Teddy ran the restaurant and everything was always perfect, pizzas, grinders etc. We moved away years ago and recently visited Groton and had to stop in for our old favorite. We went in and spoke with the young lady at the counter. My wife told her about our past visits and ordered the large tuna grinder and asked if it was the same as years ago. She said that it's the same and nothing has changed. Well, she was right, it tasted exactly the same as years ago. Beautiful newer building and you can tell that it's being run as it was years ago. I haven't been in the Pizza Palace in a long time and, after today's visit, I doubt I'll ever go back there. I ordered a large toasted ham grinder. They used to be good, but not today! Ham and provolone cheese were scarce and the tomato slices were far and few between. The tomato wasn't ripe. It was orange to green in color and had the consistency of watermelon rind. All for $10.99 + tax. More for less! I highly doubt that this restaurant will stay in business, serving such poor quality food. read more

Every time I've driven by the restaurant for the past few months around lunchtime (always after 11:30 a.m. on weekdays the place is closed. I've also called and there is no answer and no answering machine with any type of message explaining why they are closed. This has been happening randomly for several months dating back to last autumn. Their website says they are open DAILY from 10am-9pm, but that obviously isn't accurate. I also checked on their Facebook page and the most recent post was on February 13....nearly two months ago. I'm not exaggerating when I write that I've TRIED to eat there no less than 12 different occasions since last summer and they've been closed each time. I know they were closed for a couple of weeks in December 2021 due to COVID because there was a note on the front door saying it, but the closures I'm mentioning are in addition to that situation. I've eaten there previously a few times last year and the food was pretty good which is why I keep trying to go back, but now it seems as if they are either permanently closed or open on a very hit and miss basis. There is no way they are open 10am-9pm daily. It would be nice if they would update their hours on their website and Facebook page. I've now given up going there anymore because it's just too frequent a problem. As you can see on Yelp, prior to my review today the most recent review for Pizza Palace is 3 months old. That makes perfect sense when they're barely open...if at all. read more

The staff that served me was very pleasant and good to work with. The order consisted of a small Chicken Cutlet Grinder ($8.59) and chocolate milkshake ($6.29). The grinder was decent, only the lettuce was exceptionally soggy, like it had been sauteed with the chicken. The chocolate milkshake had no flavor to it whatsoever. Love this pizza! Perfectly crunchy bottom on the whole crust, but nice and fluffy on the inside. Lots of cheese and loaded with toppings. Also cant beat the deal that you get a free cheese if you buy 2 large pizzas. Great family meal deal. read more

Our final day in Connecticut began with sleeping in. Ahhhhhh, I HEART vacations. And praise the Lord that my 8 month old also decided to sleep in. After snoozing the alarm for the 20th time, we finally got up and since we wanted to hit up the cider making demonstration at B.F. Clyde's by 1pm, a quick lunch was in order. Pizza Palace was a quick and delicious spot for lunch. Food - We ordered a small special ($8.75), which was a 10" pizza with pepperoni, sausage, meatball, onions, peppers, and mushrooms. The crust was thick and similar to Pizza Hut's pan pizza, only much less greasy. How they managed to get the crust so crispy on the outside without making it oily is a mystery to me. The small is large enough to feed 2 or 3, so if you need more food, the large special is $16.90. We also ordered a small Italian combo grinder ($5.95). They also have Italian specialties, such as spaghetti, ravioli ($6.50), and calzones ($6.95), and seafood, such as fish and chips ($9.45), clam strips ($9.45), and fried scallops ($11.75). Location - the interior was spacious and would be good for groups. We went around lunch time on a Saturday and there were several other customers. Note: Pizza Grotto is right next door and every time we drove by, there wasn't a single car in the parking lot. You almost have to feel bad for it. It's kinda like they're the stinky kid who got caught picking his nose. I found myself strangely sympathetic towards PG, but judging by the lack of customers, make sure you go to Pizza Palace. Service - was incredibly friendly. They were kind enough to cut the small grinder into 4's. We had less than an hour for lunch, and the food came out quickly and we made the cider demo on time. Pizza Palace is your typical pizza restaurant. Their menu includes pizza, seafood dinners, salads, grinders, burgers, sandwiches, fried chicken, appetizers, french fries, onion rings, milk shakes, and limited dessert menu. Their pizza is definitely worth trying. I am a huge fan of crust and they have a nice crispy buttery tasting crust. Their pizza is what I think of when I think of a "Connecticut pizza," it's thick, but not too thick and has perfect amount of sauce to cheese ratio. Plus, their pizza sauce is delicious. They have all the basic pizza toppings. I find that when a restaurant offers too many menu options, they run the risk of becoming a "jack of all trades, master of bone." With that being said, Pizza Palace does not offer the gourmet pizzas, like buffalo chicken, or Barbeque chicken, etc., but that's okay because the options that they do offer are supreme, so why fix something that isn't broken?!?!? I am a stickler for a clean restaurant and this restaurant meets my standards. I usually order takeout, and have rarely (once many years ago at other location) sat down to eat-in, however I have used the ladies' room and it's always clean and fresh, and I have spent time inside waiting on my order, and I have always found the restaurant to be clean, well kept, and fresh. The staff are always friendly and prompt. They seem to work well together, which is not always the case at all restaurants. The food... My favorite thing to order here is mozzarella sticks. By far they have the best mozzarella sticks in the area. For $5.99, you get six sticks and home-made spaghetti sauce. Their sauce is hands down the best in the area. I would even go as far as to say that their sauce is in direct competition with high-end Italian restaurant, Tony D's. I am extremely picky when it comes to spaghetti sauce, and their sauce makes the cut. There are only two places in Connecticut that I order spaghetti and red sauce from and that is here and Tony D's restaurant in New London. If you enjoy spaghetti sauce, definitely worth a try. Another item that I really enjoy here is their whole belly fried clams. There are not many places that offer fresh whole belly friend clams, and of those that do, there are even fewer places that get it right. Pizza Palace is one of those places that gets it right. So, if you enjoy whole belly clams as much as I do, give this place a try, you won't regret it. Their garlic bread is pretty typical, pizza restaurant style, nothing out of the ordinary, but definitely good. Last, but not least, prices. Their prices are very reasonable, give or take a little here or there, but in the same ball park as their local competition. Some things on their menu are prices a little lower and some things are prices a little higher than their local competition, but in the end it all evens out. I never base my meal solely on price, I prefer to pay more money for quality than to pay less for poor quality. I find this place to be reasonably priced with high quality food. The Good Part: Their pizza is best pizza in the area! They don't skimp on toppings either. Very rich and very filling, a little greasy. Even the crust is delicious and I usually cut the crust off from other pizza restaurants and don't eat it. The restaurant offers grinders, burgers, yummy french fries, salads, etc. We've never left this restaurant unsatisfied. The Bad Part: A little overpriced but, for us, worth every penny. They do offer good sized portions so you can have two maybe even three meals from one order. Bottom Line: Most of the locals say it's the best pizza around and it's usually crowded in the evenings around dinner time. Get there early or call for takeout. read more

Our server was excellent. Very nice and attentive. She even made the effort to let us know the reason for the delay in pizza and kept giving me updates. I love that. The food itself was ok. I'm not a big fan of Greek style pizza but there was something about this one that kept me eating. It had almost a buttery taste to it. Different but good. My family has been coming here for almost as long as the joint has been open. Unfortunately the place has been going down hill lately. Today I spent a little over 25.00, @5.00 for a shake the shake was like pouring a glass of milk out of the carton, I ordered a sm Genoa with just pickles and cheese with extra extra olive oil no spices, onions, tomatoes, or lettuce @ $6.00 and what did I get everything but what I ordered. I could not eat it because of the spices I am allergic to it. I also ordered a hot dog for my mother @ $3.00, you would think that the dog would be longer than 4 inches, would have been cooked longer than a minute or so on the grill it didn't ever have grill markings and was cold in the middle. Our puppy would not even eat it and she licks her butt. Think about what you order from there, you may want to go in the kitchen and watch how the food is made. read more
