First time ordering from Nana's Byrek. We ordered food to go.We ever knew this place was there and we are from Waterford. We ordered two steak & cheese grinders, fried dough and a slice of the hamburg and cheese Byrek. The bread is delicious! The grinders are great, the fried dough is a sweet treat. We will try the Byrek again the crust was very flaky. We will be back! A wonderful woman working there helped my husband with the food out to the car. When I'm in unfamiliar territory, Yelp is my No. 1 resource for locating good food. That's how I learned about Nana's Byrek and Byreks in general. I Googled Byrek about as soon as I saw the word. My interpretation of Nana's version of a Byrek is that it's an Albanian thick stuffed pizza/pastry hybrid, made with layers of a not quite, but almost, phyllo dough, that is stuffed with some sort of filling. I ordered Spinach and ricotta, but they also had a meat and cheese filling and one other option. You can order a slice of Byrek, but we ordered a whole, which filled a pizza box. I also ordered it brushed with the special garlic oil referenced in other reviews. If you order a whole Byrek, you're gonna need about four adults to finish it. It is filling and tasty. The texture is like a denser, less brittle phyllo dough. The color was great. The added oil gave the Byrek a nice garlic flavor. The filling was tasty too. Nana's is located in a plaza with other businesses in a calm area. I got takeout, although Nana's did have several tables that I assume they use for dine-in. Service was friendly and timely. Nana's makes pizzas and other food as well, but I couldn't skip the opportunity to try something I had never heard of. Five Stars read more

Nana's Byrek is an Albanian restaurant and definitely was a unique place to visit! I grabbed a toasted chicken parm sub to go and it was a different style than what I am used to! They were heavy with the garlic (if you look at the picture you probably could see it on top of the bread). The person taking our order let us know that they make the breads fresh and you can definitely tell! The server was very personable and they have a reward system that if you order so many times you get something free? The ambiance was bustling and they had a few tables inside, but I ordered to go. I was visiting from New York and stopped in with my husband for a few slices. The pizza was absolutely delicious and the owners were such warm and lovely people. At the end of the evening and we ended up staying and chatting with them for a while. we will be returning to Connecticut every now and then and stopping Nana'a for a few slices will definitely be on our itinerary. read more

The pizza is delicious, has a flavorful sauce, and has the perfect amount of cheese and toppings. You can tell they use quality ingredients and put genuine care into every order. Everything on the menu is great! But what really makes this spot shine is the customer service. The staff is so friendly, attentive, and welcoming. Ordered a basic ham grinder with lettuce, tomato, provolone cheese and oil. It came on bread that they make there. The grinder was edible but was nothing special. Had my sights set on an old school grinder from Sonny's, Supreme, Crown, Pizzarama but figured I'd give Nana's a try. The bread was like a dry panini flatbread that actually took away from the grinder. The lady taking the order was nice. I was a little put off that the guy making the grinder just cleared a table of dirty dishes and didn't wash his hands before making the grinder. He saw me watching so he went and got one glove, that he blew into to make it open for his hand to slide in. For a $13 grinder, it really should be an elevated experience, not sub-par. read more

Having eaten at nana's byrek a number of times I feel ready to finally write a review. I have tried a few of the pizzas (buffalo and cheeseburger are my favorites) as well as the meat byrek. All of the food that I have tried up to this point has been delicious. The pizza is a thin crust with the perfect amount of chew to it. The slices have plenty of toppings but not to the point where it overwhelms the pizza. I look forward to trying their grinders next since they look delicious. With all that being said, the thing I love the most about nana's is the people. Every single time I have gone in I have been greeted by welcoming people who make you feel right at home. I cannot say enough good things about the customer service here. I would return just for that, luckily the food is awesome too so that's just another reason to visit. read more

Had the whole nana byrek pie and it is great! This was the first time using grub hub and it was the worst, driver did not pick up the food so I had to go pick it up myself. The owner was awesome and gave us the food even though I tried multiple times to pay, guy I was with left a tip, I had no cash. Will definitely be coming back. Baclava is good too. read more

I visited Nana's Byrek for the first time a couple weeks ago on the recommendation of a friend. I was not disappointed. It's always the small family owned places that turn out to be gems. Just as previous reviews state, the staff is super friendly and accommodating. This was my first time trying Byrek and we got a slice with ricotta and spinach that was outstanding - crispy with flavors of garlic and butter. They also gave us a sample of one with cheese and beef. The pizza reminds me of Greek pizza. I was happy with the thinner crust (but not thin burnt crust like in New Haven). Make sure to try out the fried cheesecake. It's dipped in some sort of batter and I have never had anything quite like it. I look forward to returning to Nana's Byrek soon. read more

Excellent family owned local restaurant. I've had the Byrek and the pizza. The spinach byrek is my favorite, on request they brush on a garlic olive oil that takes it to another level. The pizza is what I consider NYC style, thin crust and delicious. The restaurant itself is in a shopping center, it doesn't really stand out from the outside but inside it's a very nice family run operation. I discovered Nana's Byrek when we had pizza at my office. The cheese pizza was so good that I took my mom there another time and we ordered the margarita pizza, also great. Just came back with my s/o and I ordered the eggplant parm grinder and he got the proccuito and mozz panini. So good, one of the best hidden italian places in the area. Very kid friendly, serves alcohol, servers dont bother you too much and are very welcoming if you want to stay. The atmosphere was so welcoming we stayed for an extra 30 minutes - something we dont do often. read more

What a cute place with such a sweet owner. I had never been but had a lot of friends tell me I must try this place. On my way there I drove past a few times trying to find it. The owner was so sweet and gave me free cannolis for the trouble! Thin crust, crispy pizza, with huge flavors. We needed some pizza delivered for a kid's birthday party. I've never had Nana's Byrek's pizza before but took a chance based on Yelp reviews. I'm glad I did! I called a day in advance to place the order; and, it was delivered on time. A few parents asked where I got the pizza. I'll have to stop in to eat sometimes. My name it's Valdete , I was born and raised in Albania , In the little village called Lumardh. Growing up my family cooked fresh meals every day and my favorite food was Byrek , we ate Byrek any time of the day simply for a snack or a meal . After I got married me and my husband Fran moved to United States . I have been working in the reastuarant Buisness for over 14 years started from washing dishes step by step to managing a corporate. My passion for food and delivering great service has grown stronger and stronger every day . I have been Dreaming on enhancing my family's recipe for many years. So finally my dream became reality and I'm extremely excited for this new chapter. I believe on using good quality ingredients preparing it with passion and serving with love !! The name "Nana's Byrek " was chosen by my children as they thought it was fair since I learned to cook from my Queen !!

The grinders aren't the only place Supreme shines though- the pizza is out of this world. Living in southeastern Connecticut, I'm well aware that I'm spoiled when it comes to pizza. Within a stones throw, there are a half dozen excellent options. When I get that craving, though, Supreme is always my top choice. As good as the meals are, half the fun is going to pick it up. Tim, Nick, and the rest of the staff create a friendly, fun, and vibrant atmosphere where something as simple as picking up lunch makes you feel like you're visiting family.
