    Spinach and Ricotta Byrek
    Jason P.

When I'm in unfamiliar territory, Yelp is my No. 1 resource for locating good food. That's how I learned about Nana's Byrek and Byreks in general. I Googled Byrek about as soon as I saw the word. My interpretation of Nana's version of a Byrek is that it's an Albanian thick stuffed pizza/pastry hybrid, made with layers of a not quite, but almost, phyllo dough, that is stuffed with some sort of filling. I ordered Spinach and ricotta, but they also had a meat and cheese filling and one other option. You can order a slice of Byrek, but we ordered a whole, which filled a pizza box. I also ordered it brushed with the special garlic oil referenced in other reviews. If you order a whole Byrek, you're gonna need about four adults to finish it. It is filling and tasty. The texture is like a denser, less brittle phyllo dough. The color was great. The added oil gave the Byrek a nice garlic flavor. The filling was tasty too. Nana's is located in a plaza with other businesses in a calm area. I got takeout, although Nana's did have several tables that I assume they use for dine-in. Service was friendly and timely. Nana's makes pizzas and other food as well, but I couldn't skip the opportunity to try something I had never heard of. Five Stars

Nana's Byrek is an Albanian restaurant and definitely was a unique place to visit! I grabbed a toasted chicken parm sub to go and it was a different style than what I am used to! They were heavy with the garlic (if you look at the picture you probably could see it on top of the bread). The person taking our order let us know that they make the breads fresh and you can definitely tell! The server was very personable and they have a reward system that if you order so many times you get something free? The ambiance was bustling and they had a few tables inside, but I ordered to go. Let me know what I should try next time I am here!

Great food and very friendly staff. I loved the Cobb salad and chicken veggie pizza. I will be back to try to try the authentic food.

So my son and I decided to pop in before a movie. What a warm wonderful place. Val has a way about her that makes you feel like your home. Great chicken tortellini, sausage and peppers, and my son had the pizza with arugula. The baklava wasn't too bad either;-). We'll be back soon!!!!

Music was a bit loud for our taste, but the outside patio was refreshing and had shade on a very sunny day. Love the variety on the menu; I got the bao buns which were tasty and a just-right portion for me. I don't remember what my dining companion got, but I remember he liked it. We loved our experience and would return for sure. We noticed that they kept trying to seat people at the first table on the patio in front of the doors that go from inside to outside, and everyone (including us) would ask to be sat at another table further away. Seems like that table needs to be moved further away or only set up when needed; no one wants to sit that close to the doors.

Therefore, I will need to revisit to give a better review. I visited The Blue Duck this past Monday, on Presidents' Day at happy hour. I got there around 3 and left just before 5. The wings were 5 for a little over $5 or something like that. Which honestly $1 wing in this economy! Excellent for my pockets. Anyways, the place was quiet, a few people did start coming in as I was leaving, and again, I came on a Monday. Not really a peak bar day. But I would say the location is near the water which is a plus. The seating area at the bar was massive. I'm curious to see how busy it gets on the weekend. This isn't necessarily and instagramable/ social media picturesque kind of spot. Ok, so the wings- I CAN'T STRESS ENOUGH- they were AMAZING . I love it when the skin after being smothered in sauce is still crispy. And they were! The blue cheese wasn't liquidity or too chunky. The fries were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. The best part- for me- is that they were the shoestring kind of fries. I'm not big on the steak fries or thicker cuts. They were salted just right! No condiments needed for dipping. I ordered two drinks, which I honestly wasn't too impressed by. But it's my bad. I probably should have stuck to shots or basics like A sour of some sort. Idk. The other drinks could be delicious. Overall the only reason at this point that I'm coming back is the wings. Truthfully, the only reason I traveled 45 minutes to New London was after seeing an IG post about all-you-can-eat wings on Mondays. Sadly they aren't doing that anymore.

Bottom line is they know their way around deep fryers, and they know eggs. You would think a spot would be packed for Sunday brunch, but we walked in to a completely dead restaurant--just two couples sitting at the bar. We got seated, but it quickly became clear that the bartender (who I assume was also the manager) was the only person working the entire front of the house. The Service & Wait To say the service was slow is an understatement. It took so long just to put in an order that we were highly tempted to walk out. The only reason we stayed was because we had an hour to kill. While the bartender was genuinely friendly--and even nicely gave me the last of the batch he had mixed--the good attitude simply couldn't make up for the agonizingly long wait. The Drinks & Food The Mimosa: It was a premixed blend that was about 90% orange juice and 10% champagne. The Fries: The lone bright spot of the meal. They were nicely seasoned and easily the best part of the experience. The Side Caesar Salad: I really wanted to love the Caesar dressing because it actually tasted homemade. Sadly, it was so incredibly overloaded with salt that I'm genuinely shocked I'm not blind. After two strikes and two back-to-back fails, I'll sadly have to bow out from giving this place a third chance. There are too many other spots to choose from to waste time on slow service and unexecuted food.

Everyone at the table got different things and we all left with clean plates. I think we all agreed that this was one of the best meals we've had. I understand that this was a unique event, but this was an amazing reflection of La Belle Aurore and the care that they put into food and atmosphere. As a result we were able to taste a number of their starters, a real winner was the crab rangoon tart there. For dinner we ordered tasting sizes of the pasta alla vodka and beef bolognese. I really like the thoughtfulness of having smaller plates be an option, for whatever reason you want it for. Also, they used campanelle pasta, rather than your standard noodles. Some real awareness of the right pasta pairing for the sauce evidenced for you. The only quibble there was the lack of seasoning in the sauce, but there was salt on the table to bring that up. The service is wicked friendly and attentive. The ambiance is certainly bohemian, with mismatched furniture and faux foliage hanging from the ceiling. The biggest ding is accessibility. One of the people at the event was in a motorized chair, and in order for them to move about or get to the restroom was a production. The tables and chairs are tightly packed, so I'd imagine someone on crutches or a walker would also have difficulty of movement. The menu changes as local ingredients come in or out of season. The current menu is available on their website. It is not large, so you know they're doing a few things and doing them right. I can recommend checking this place out.
