We were so sad when we heard Pizza Oven was closing, but thrilled when we learned a new family took ownership! I'm thrilled to report that the pizza is still amazing. We ordered a large pepperoni pizza, a small meatball pizza, and a salad. The pizzas were so good but the salad was kind of odd. It was broccoli, carrots, peppers, onions, and a little bit of lettuce. I think they had run out of ingredients (we were asked if a "garden" salad was ok, and sure why not? But it was more of a mixture of veggies, sorry I didn't snap a pic). After seeing the high rating i decided to give thus place a try. Cash only so i had to scramble around the area for cash first. Lets just say it was NOT worth the hassle. On a positive note, the toppings are generous and fresh.. but the pizza itself is low quality.. thin crust which i usually love tasted like nothing and pulled like freezer pizza. People said "Go here if you like Ledos, it'll blow you away!" So I went in with pretty high expectations. They have an epic deal where you get two medium cheese pizzas for $13.99, and I was like YES. The best way for me to assess a pizza is to start with the most basic one. So I called ahead, and went to pick them up. It's only 10 minutes to my house which is nice! When I pulled up, I went inside and I thought the decor was kind of cool! The ceiling is all hats! I also noticed a section for dining in that seemed nice. My order was ready right when I arrived, so I grabbed the pizzas and headed back out! If you need to get on the BW Parkway going North from there, it's a bit of a funky turn, so be careful -- lots of cars to worry about. When I arrived, I was so excited to try the pizza -- but in my opinion the cheese looked slightly burnt. I grabbed a few slices, and I was shocked with how... boring it tasted. I just wasn't getting flavors from anything -- the crust, the sauce... I had to use my own spices to pep it up a little and still it took a lot! Needless to say, I was pretty disappointed. I'm the pizza monster! So, I decided since I was in this area that I'd try this place out. Welp it was super bowl Sunday and they weren't busy. I should have known. First, it's cash only. What business does cash only these days? Anyhow, I got my pizzas. I thought it was going to be similar to Ledos and that is why I stopped but it wasn't anything I expected. Ledos is definitely better and I'm not sure I would come back here. The staff was nice so they get a star for that. The food was okay and edible but not anything that I'd write home about. I can't believe I have never done a review of Pizza Oven. They were a staple when I was growing up. Unfortunately, the one near my house closed down so the only one that's left is the one in Riverdale. The owner is the original owner as far as I know as well. Super nice guy. We're from another area stuck at a nearby hotel because our home flooded. Checked Yelp and here we are. He's a pizza officionado, I like things clean and simple. SCORE! This pizza is sooo good. Not greasy, not soggy, not a bunch of bread dough and it stands up when cut. Not some floppy soggy mess. We also ordered a small tossed salad which was a nice collection of romaine, spinach and assorted veggies - with an excellent Bleu cheese. We ate there, only 4-6 booths, but after we ordered everything was brought to our table. Nice, quaint place with very polite and thoughtful staff. Our pizza took less than 20 minutes and we asked for crispy. The menu at this place is amazing, the website doesn't reflect this. They've got breakfast, soups, chili, gyros, chicken noodles (can't wait to return for those!) and a t-bone steak dinner for under $20. This is a solid 2. We placed our order for delivery through the Slice app. Delivery was estimated at 45 mins. We got app updates and eventually it arrived 1-1/2 hours later. Pizzas were WAY overcooked and almost burnt. We were hungry so we ate them but damn they were tasteless. Crust was good but the sauce and cheese/toppings were so bland. I actually started to wonder if I had COVID and lost my sense of taste lmao. Nope I did not it was just that bad. It was pizza with great crackery crust but otherwise sooo disappointing. Pizza Oven was my favorite pizza restaurant growing up (in the 70s-80s), and it's great that it's still around. For those who are unfamiliar with a "Maryland-style pizza," this place is a landmark original. Prices are also incredibly low, considering the size and quality of the pizza. I try to come here every time I visit the area, and I finally brought my three kids from California, who also loved it. Be sure to sign their travel book and memorialize your visit. I am not going to review the food. It is not bad, but not mind blowing. You just need to go here to experience the overall decor and ambience. There are literally hundreds of baseball caps hanging all over the place, and craploads of memorabilia lining the joint. A pulled pork sandwich for $1.58? Okay, cool, I will take four. Right now, I am eating a loaded cheese steak, a hot mess, but real tasty, with surprisingly great bread. Brian Boileau started it in 1958 and at one point he had 14 other locations. He's probably in his late 70s. I hear him now bantering with the customers and workers. His restaurant is a living, evolving work of art and love. Pizza Oven has been in business since September 1957 in the same location, and i never heard about it until my fiance told me someone was telling him that this is the best pizza you will ever taste. Foot Long hotdogs ARE NOT a FOOT LONG... They take a single dog & split it into 2 halves... Actually calling the mess a foot long hot dog. The buns fall a part, & toppings are highly inconsistent, small chunks, long slivers...soaked in mustard or barely any at all. The hamburger sub... What foreign spices are in this meat? Too much & too overpowering... Next, the pizza crust... No no no no no, it's not the same great pizza from the 1980's , not remotely close... I've been using Uber Eats, between many of the restaurants missing order notes, or simply crappy food, the fees are way too much as to have to deal with crappy tasting & crappy looking food... One of the true and unique treasures from my childhood--a recipe and ambiance that has remained consistent all these years. The Pizza Oven has been a staple of Riverdale--and pizza lovers within a 50-mile radius--since 1957. I likely had my first taste as a toddler circa 1975, and I was hooked for life. I now make it a point to visit at least once a month, making the drive all the way from Northern VA. And yes, it is *always* worth the drive. Most, if not all, of the old time independent pizza shops in the DMV area are long gone--namely Delaney's Irish Pizza Pub and Pal Jacks in Laurel--both of which had comparably delicious thin crusts and memorable tomato sauces. But the old Pizza Oven is still there, by some miracle, with that same wonderful taste. It's a rare gift to be able to enjoy something so fondly remembered from a much simpler time, and a remarkable feat that the owners have managed to keep going all these years. Frankly, it's the type of place that, by now, I feared would've been bought and sold many times over, with the original pizza recipe lost to the ages. It's the type of place I expected to miss dearly by now; remembering the aroma that filled the car, and the taste of that first hot slice out of the box--decades after they'd closed their doors for the last time. I ordered two medium pizza yesterday called in asked if they were wearing mask and gloves they told me yes told me the pizza would be ready 15 minutes I live two blocks away from them so I drove right away and what I seen when i got there they weren't wearing gloves and touching metal surfaces all while preparing my pizza with their bare hand I told them to cancel my order she asked why I said you are not wearing glove all awhile manager Brian looked on saying nothing one woman was dining in she stopped eating her food and walked out I will never go back there again and I will be calling the health department Monday to report them. Love this pizza and have loved it for years!!!! Cannot understand the negative reviews, this place has existed for 50 years+. I know people that travel 45 miles to get this pizza. The subs and sandwiches are also great and have homemade sides that accompany them at no extra charge ~ who does that!! The staff are very pleasant (with maybe some needing English understanding improvement) and you simply cannot beat the food and the prices. I ordered an egg sandwich which was about $5. My only complaint about this place is they do not accept cash. I had to scrape together $5 to eat. They have an Atm outside but I'm always skeptical of atms that are not affiliated with banks in random locations. I was born and raised in the area and been coming to pizza oven for years..my typical visit is Saturday mornings for breakfast and Yolanda is the cook and she does a great job..and you can tell her now you'd like something cooked and she'll always do her best to get it right..there's something you have to respect about someone who takes pride and trying to get your order right..and as a bonus I get history lessons both locally from Brian and nationally from his pamphlets..for all of Pizza Ovens quirks and maybe imperfections it's still a good place to go to..they still BBQ in the parking lot on weekends where you can get a 1/4 chicken with rice for $5..with so many chains that have taken one the area supporting local independent restaurants is something to be aware of..and PIzza Oven being in same location in East Pines for over 60 years is the definition of a local business read more
