I've ordered and eaten here a few times. Positives- wide variety of pizzas, reasonably good taste, clean restaurant, wait staff is usually polite Negatives- price for size and quality of pizza is a bit of a stretch in comparison to other local pizzerias; customer service from the cooks needs lots of work. Recently placed a take out order there. Asked for extra onions on the bbq chicken pizza. Was charged for the extra- fine no problem. Received the order but no extra onions. Pointed this out to the hostess at the front, and she took the pizza back to the kitchen. 2 min later pizza returns with 2 handfuls of raw red onions on top of the original pizza. I point this out to the hostess again. Supervisor comes up and defends the actions of the kitchen. I ask her how she would feel if it were her as the customer. She then admits she didn't actually see the pizza with the handfuls of raw onions on top. She doesn't know what to do and asks me what to do. They recooked the pizza but again no extra red onions. At this point I remember my friends' stories about what happens when you return food and anger the kitchen so I cut my losses and leave. I think when you lack in customer service and your food isn't outstanding enough to compensate for that deficit you're telling the customer you're not about service and quality. PS- It's not lost on me that if I wasn't the customer the passive aggressive onion move by the kitchen would be pretty funny. Lol read more

OMG the salmon and risotto are to die for. I first had it for my birthday back in October( first time I've had risotto, only seen in cooking shows) and from them on I crave it quite often. I am so glad they are on Door Dash, so even with this craziness of having to be locked in (unwillingly) I can still have it delivered to me and enjoy it still. I've tried other places and the salmon is good most the time but NOT Pizza Nova good! With that and the lobster bisque it's a wonderful meal. I do wish they would bring back the veggie sandwich. I loved, loved, loved that and please think about bringing it back. I would highly recommend this place to everyone. It has something for everyone. I come here every Tuesday and Thursday after my daughters practice for dinner.. Today the manager on duty said they would not seat us because we came at 7:37 ( they close at 8) and will only do take out. Though many may look at the title of this establishment and assume pizza is the best dish they offer, I've come to question this, as the calamari appetizer is something to write home about. The little squids and perfectly breaded and fried to a crisp. The marinara sauce served with the dish has a lovely bite of spice that warms the palate in an unexpected, yet delightful manner. The loveliest of flavors from the most unexpected place. The garlic rosemary rolls are another reason to come back. Wow. Has this place declined in service and increased in price. Went in to order a salad to go--$18. And the first two ladies (appeared to be managers) that were at the register had nose rings--the loop kind that look like a bull ring--that is just unappetizing. And as I waited, they and two trainees proceed to gab and gossip-- and when I asked if I wanted bread rolls that have always come with food I proceeded to receive a third of what I have received in the past. The menu outside (where we look at it now, thanks to COVID19) is NOT the current menu. Their menu is very limited. My diet is very specific, only allowing gluten free/vegan options. The pizza I tried to order wasn't available (shrimp pesto), so I tried ordering another type with vegan cheese (also on the menu), and again, they don't have any vegan cheese. Delicious food, good beer, very tasty blueberry lemonade! I've been here a couple times for dine in and once or twice for takeout. My favorite is the white pepperoni pizza with some wings on the side! Oh and I can't forget about the bread bite appetizers. All delicious, with a nice quiet atmosphere and some low lights inside. I absolutely LOVE pizza nova. It's absolutely my favorite restaurant in California. I'm kind of upset I gave two stars..but it's just because of the visit I had to their San Marcos location. My boyfriend was taking me how for dinner for our anniversary, and we chose to stop by here. Mind you, we're broke college kids who rarely eat out so it was a big deal for us to come. We came about 45 minutes before closing, and the bartender kept talking very, very loudly, almost directly at us, saying how much she HATES when people come in around closing. It was so rude how guilty she was making us feel. When our food came, it was all in plastic cups, plates, and had plastic forks! They said their dishwasher was broken...but honestly it felt like they just didn't want to wash anymore dishes. We came for a dining experience, I wouldn't have been as disappointed if they maybe took like 5% off the check at least or something like that...the staff just seemed rude, and the whole experience felt a little disappointing. Definitely going to stick with the awesome Solana Beach and Point Loma locations! read more

I came to Pizza Nova for lunch with coworkers, and I feel that we all had a mediocre experience, food-wise. While there were no issues with the service, neither the atmosphere or the food were anything to write home about. I ordered the lunch combo with "The Best Salad Ever" and the Goat Cheese Pizza (pork omitted). To be direct, I would argue that the salad was not the best salad ever. Even so, k enjoyed it more than the personal sized pizza, as that option was far too greasy. Our whole party unanimously agreed that the food was too greasy in general (yes, we know it is pizza, but there is still a line that shouldn't be crossed...). The complimentry garlic bread balls were a pleasant surprise, but again, lathered in a gallon of butter. Overall, I don't see myself coming to Pizza Nova of my own volition (barring the meals that work pays for). read more

So, management contacted me after my last review and treated my husband and I to a 'try us again' dinner. Who am I to say no, right? Maybe the place had an off night? We started the meal with calamari and their garlic knots which were pretty good. Then, the meal was very reminiscent of the last time we went. We both ordered something different- a meatball sandwich for my husband and mozzarella/gouda ravioli for me. Both entrees were mediocre. The food was dry and my dish was drowned in sauce And, just like last time, the service was fine. Melissa did her best keeping our iced tea filled and was eager to get us whatever we needed. Going there for the first time, I had high hopes...I really wanted to like this place, since the reviews were mostly favorable. Sadly, I was turned off and to quote the Raven--"ah, nevermore!." To be fair, I'll list the positives and negatives. The good: Ambiance was nice, the decorations (hanging plants in glass bulbs) are creative. Waitress seemed nice as well. The bread rolls they give you is decent (see pictures). The bad: Several things turned me off... 1. Fork had a tiny metal (hair-thin) that drilled into my finger as I lifted it up to take a bite of my salad. This may be rare, but was not pleasant. Felt like a bee sting! 2. Pizza had a hair in it. Unless it's the Chinese hair-soup (don't worry, its not made with real hair, it's seaweed), I am not too crazy about hair in my food. We told the manager. He did the usual, take it off the bill. I didn't touch it after seeing the hair. 3. Lemonade--while it tasted good and was freshly made (what we were told), not once was it refilled. 4. The oven is not "REAL" wood-fired oven and trust me, you can taste the difference. We know because we are building one in our backyard and have done extensive research! I understand I can't compare the pizza to the Napolean pizza in Italy, or even Chicago pizza. However I would probably go to Sammy's or CPK before this place if I want "Californian" pizza again. After paying, we ended up driving to another pizza restaurant (with a real brick-fired pizza oven), Vigilluci's. Their Pizza Genovese and Calzone con Salsiccia e Spinaci hit the spot, and was awesome as usual. :) read more

Beer is ice cold and good variety. Salads are pretty good but they should give you a bit more for the money as they seem small in comparison to other places. Lobster bisque is surprisingly delicious and not too heavy like most places make it. Service is hit and miss. Servers seem to disappear in the back for a long time leaving your beer glass empty for long periods. Probably understaffed. Overall it's a good place to dine just need to work on service and making the salads larger for what they charge, or reducing the price of them. read more

They have such a great happy hour! I came here with a few of my friends for a girlfriends birthday and we were not disappointed. Their happy hour includes a lot of their classics, especially their pizza. You can't stop with with their house made garlic knots! And their drinks are fantastic! Up until about 2 weeks ago, we only ordered delivery or takeout from Pizza Nova. We recently started eating there, due in large part to their great customer service and oh yeah, did I mention crazy cheap happy hour?! The $3 for 3 hours Happy Hour (3p-6p M-F) is one of the best I've experienced. We actually happened upon it by accident 2 Fridays ago because we had family in town and wanted to go out. Let me tell you, that Happy Hour is aweeeesoooommmmmme!!!! I'm used to happy hours only giving you deals on those nasty yellow fizzy beers. You know the type...great commercials, crappy taste. Anyway, they've got some rather large pint glasses, and you begin to appreciate it all that much more when you realize you can have ANY beer on tap for 3 bucks. We're talking Stone IPA, Stone Pale Ale, Lost Abbey, Stella Artois, and several other QUALITY brews. For the beer selection, you just can't go wrong. The food...also very good! You must try the white pepperoni pizza, and you'll notice another yelper mentioned substituting pancetta for the pep. Haven't tried that myself yet but it sounds good! The happy hour food selections are fantastic, and an AMAZING value. The mini pizzas are probably about 8" in diameter? I dunno, but I got a pepperoni sausage and mushrooms one and was only able to eat 2 pieces before I was too full to move. I also ordered the mac n cheese au gratin, which was very cheesy/creamy/altogether GOOD. It's no masterpiece, but it's way better than an extra value meal at McDonald's! With any order, you'll be given some tasty garlicky buttery doughy rolls, most likely made from excess pizza dough. Whatever it's made of, I'm eatin 'em. They're a little too good, and if you're not careful you WILL fill up on 'em. Ya been warned. Our server Jenna was the most charming and helpful server you could hope for! She didn't always know the answer to our questions off the top of her head, but she admitted it and said she'd go ask. Two shakes and she was right back to us with an answer. At times she was a little absent minded, but that could be our fault for distracting her! Like when she came with our waters with straws in hand and my wife asked a question, to which she replied she'd go and check...with our straws still in hand. :) It was fun to have a server that made us truly feel at home, and we were able to joke with a bit about various things going on in the restaurant. The atmosphere is nice. Not romantic or anything, but worthy. Other patrons seem to always be in a good mood, which again probably reflects their wonderful service. In all, I really don't have any complaints about Pizza Nova. I am so glad we live close to this location. It's now one of our top date night locations! Went here for dinner and to catch the last of the happy hour apps. Great place for casual dining and hanging out with friends. Plus, the happy hour deals are great! Our server was Naomi and she is absolutely amazing! She is so sweet and always has a smile on her face. She was very attentive to our table to make sure on how we were doing. Also very helpful by giving us recommendations since we couldn't decide what to order. My friend ordered the $5 HH calamari and mini cheese pizza. I ordered the $5 HH meatballs and marinara and the fettuccine alfredo with added chicken and broccoli. Calamari was delicious, not too heavily fried and the dipping sauces were amazing. The meatballs were so flavorful and not dry at all. Now the fettuccine alfredo wasn't as good as I expected (which is why I give this 4 stars) was a bit dry, not enough sauce, and it was pretty hard to eat. It would have been tasty, if there was more sauce in it. The broccoli was kind of bitter which wasn't pleasant at all. Overall, the food was tasty despite the pasta but maybe next time I'll know to order it with more sauce, or order something else too. Thanks Naomi for the great service though!!! read more

Ordered a prosciutto arugula pizza and ended up have to assemble myself and barely enough prosciutto for two slices. Also ordered chopped salad which was 85% lettuce. Spent $33 for these items and it was definitely not worth and the food was below average. I still can't get over the amount of prosciutto on this pizza. As Charles Barkley would say. TERRIBLE. I found Pizza nova on yelp. Since I was on what could've been a ferociously awkward tinder date, I figured that a pizza place might be a good choice. We were greeted at the door with a refreshingly enthusiastic Haley, Who showed us to our table and proceeded to go through an amazing list of specials and personal favorites. After five years of employment, this young lady has the place wired! We did exactly what she said!! I ordered the chicken Caesar wrap with a side of pineapples and spicy aolie sauce. I know, sounds weird but it was absolutely spectacular! Couldn't even finish it! It's literally two meals! We were then joined by Adriana and she made recommendations on several pizzas and after much deliberation we finally settled on the Portobello pancetta and we were stoked! The place was immaculate, the bathrooms were clean the staff was unreal and we met the manager, Tyler, and let him know his staff is first rate. I will be back! 3.5 stars for a really cute spot in my old hometown. If you're a thin-crust person theirs is pretty good. Skip the pastas and soups though, I found them all bland and uninspired. The one thing I did enjoy off the pizza menu were the meatballs. Yum! That flavored up the soup nicely. If you dine in, check out the rad fire pit outside and the big wall of LA fitness where they show movies for free at night! Also say hi to the super friendly bartender who will hook you up with a decent margarita or local brew. If you do takeout be prepared to wait. Also for some reason my pizza was brought out with the delicious things I ordered on it on the SIDE. Where I come from (New York and San Francisco) when we order items like gorgonzola, pears, and arugula on our pizzas we savor them blending in with the cheesy goodness of the pie. Oh wow, as I was writing the review I saw one of the bussers hold an arms lengths of cups up in the air! Dinner and a show! My wife does not drink but I always play russian roulette and pick sonething new. This time, I asked for a simple long island iced tea...it was way more than simple! It was one of the best. I ordered a pepperoni pizza and decided to throw an audible with some panchetta (when I read "italian bacon" I was sold!) It was such a great decision. As usual, my wife's chicken wrap with chipotle chili aioli (is that a word?! Lol) was delicious as usual. I highly recommend to make a Monday a great day! On a date with our 7 year old (his first one ever without other siblings) so it was special. Positives: 1) Our server was very nice. He greeting us and seated us while the host was busy. Very attentive the first few minutes. 2) Pizza was good Challenges: 1) our server's section was huge and he was stretched too thin. He rarely had to time to check on us or notice we were waiting forever. He was serving both sides of the restaurant AND the bar. 2) we waited over 30 minutes for our food 3) our salad never showed up 4) lobster bisque had a film on top, a result of being under a heat lamp too long. Why wasn't it just brought out first with our "ghost" salad? 5) lukewarm soft fries 6) calamari was rubbery 7) the kids coloring sheet they gave us was a paper plate and crayons because they ran out. 8) check was brought and my credit card was dropped somewhere between the server station and our table. I almost left without it but realized it and finally had (to wait AGAIN) to ask. They told me they found one (thank goodness it was them and not someone else) then we had to wait even longer to get it back. We were already late, due to slow food, for a planned activity somewhere else with our child. 9) lastly, they clearly prioritize DoorDash orders ahead of customers because all of those orders were coming out with no delay at all. I told the manager about our experience and she gave me a coupon for one free entree. Not a great save for a poor experience. Yet another fabulous experience at Pizza Nova! Once we discovered this place we never ever go out or order pizza anyplace else. Their happy hour has customized Mini pizzas. So instead of ordering one big pizza you can have 3 different flavors and they don't charge any extra for any other type of toppings. It's absolutely amazing!! This long overdue review is prompted by an interesting conversation we just had with our absolutely favorite waiter (Jack). When we asked him about his weekend was he said it was actually kind of sad. When we asked him why, he was a little reluctant to share. It turns out that somebody left a really bad review about him 3 days ago, and he was still Very sad and confused by it. We were completely confused. We've actually called ahead a few times to make sure that Jack was working because if he's not working we usually just wait for another day... Other servers are great; however, Jack is our favorite. He Is consistently friendly, courteous, cheerful, fantastic at his job, and always has our favorite drink as soon as we sit down. All I can say is, just come in and try for yourself. This review isn't for the restaurant itself (which my family and I love) but rather for the catering they did at the "Taste for Student Success" event yesterday at Cal State San Marcos. Whomever organized the event apparently didn't prep the vendors, because all the food ran out 1.5 hours into a 3 hour event. Everything. No food whatsoever. Compounding things, the 10 breweries continued to pour beer, so it looks like event was going to get ugly. Nik and Lindsay from Pizza Nova saved the event, heading back to the restaurant for more food, and returning to the event to serve the hungry crowd. People were very appreciative! I love California style pizzas and I really like this place although it is a chain restaurant. We've been here several times because they have a great 2 for 1 coupon. With that, you get great affordable gourmet pizza. Pizzas we've tried: Mediterranean: excellent. Veggie is usually a favorite of ours and this is a good combination. Gorgonzola and pear: This was ok. I've had a better version of this from California Pizza Kitchen. Portabella and pancetta: Hands down the best pizza we've had from here. This pizza is richer than we like to eat. We thought it had too much cheese, but the combination of flavors is mouth-wateringly addictive. Yummy! Pizza nova: Another good combination of flavors.
