This is a popular Kosher pizza place(meaning no meat on the pizzas) on La Brea between melrose and beverly. I was there Saturday night and it was very crowded just after Shabbat but it's large with plenty of seating. I had a large pizza with mushrooms and onions. It was very large and finished it the next day. The prices are reasonable and I recommend Mayven(Yiddish for expert) for large groups/families wanting Kosher Pizza. read more

Name The word "mayven" in the title is Yiddish. It means "expert". Thus, the name of this restaurant is "Pizza Expert". Selection The menu here is very simple. Plain cheese pizza with different toppings that included things like onions, peppers, garlic, eggplant etc. It also has some Mexican offerings nachos, tacos, burritos etc. I saw the table next to me had ordered some ziti. If you like a very basic menu or you have kids this food is great for you! Lots of cheesy offerings here. Seems like they've had the same menu for years which is a great thing because that means they probably have the menu down pretty well and with fewer ingredients, that means what you are getting is probably more fresh as there is less waste. For those of you that like a more gourmet pizza, the selection at Pizza Mayven will probably leave you wanting more. Where's the pineapple pizza? Where's the pizza with spinach? And hey, in an age where we have so much fake kosher meat, why not put some of that on a pizza? Or, at the very least, offer some variety of cheese, goat cheese pizza, anyone? Service The guy who helped us behind the counter was awesome. He was super patient and friendly and answered all our questions. He brought the food to our table as well. Food We got 2 slices of cheese pizza. We were happy with it. It's a thin crust and has just the right amount of sauce. Very simple, no frills pizza. Came fast. Our pizza was $3 a slice. They also sell pizza pies which looks like what most people eating there got. Atmosphere: The atmosphere here leaves something to be desired. The decor is 90's cafeteria (I'm sorry, but it is true). The tables are wooden and the chairs are bridge chairs. This place really needs an update. When I go out to eat, part of the fun is the ambiance of the place. However, if you have a bunch of unruly children, or children in general, you can be happy bringing them here and not have to worry about them messing up the place or being loud. Everything is easily washable and not breakable. You order up at the counter which is also the kitchen. I love an open kitchen. It keeps the cooks honest and you can see that the place is actually clean. Would love to rent this space out for a kids pizza party! Parking There was metered parking in the front. We put money in for 40 minutes and we were fine. We only ordered 2 slices of pizza though. Although the street can get very busy. There were a couple spaces right in front. Kosher For the kosher people out there, this restaurant is not just kosher (dairy) but also chalov yisrael. For those of you that are saying "what's that?", let me explain. Not all kosher people are chalov yisrael, but some are. It's a stricter level of keeping kosher. It applies to dairy foods only and means that the milk has been looked over and watched by the kosher supervisors to make sure it only contains the type of milk it is said to contain and also, doesn't have milk from a nonkosher animal. A lot of kosher people don't keep this level of kosher because kosher milk made in America is typically safe and monitored by the USDA. All this is to say that if you are entertaining someone who is very strict in their level of kosher, they can eat here, no problem. I have no idea how anyone rated this place higher than two stars. Bad on almost every level. Pizza has very little sauce and what is there has little flavor as though it is out of a can. Plain old mozzarella cheese on a slightly burned crust. The decor is folding chairs and cheap tables and the place is messy and dirty. Literally food on the floor not being cleaned up or tables bused. Because I'm Jewish I will say what others probably weren't comfortable saying... This is a heavenly, scrumptious, freshly baked classic kind of pizza. It is not a hipster pizza place. It has no fancy ingredients or novel flavor combinations. It does straight-up, regular pizza extra good because they cook it just right, make it up fresh, and the ingredients are obviously high quality and super fresh. The crust is crisp, especially on the bottom, so it holds its own. But it looks like just another regular ole pizza, like one you'd get at a chain. But do not fear, it is there that the comparison ends. Add to this that it's Kosher, so no meat. Only veggie pizzas. And somehow it not only works but is a 5 star experience. We have ordered the mushroom pizzas and olive pizzas which are both excellent, as well as their fries, which are awesome. The interior is terrible, it's true, in that it's-never-been-updated, cheap tables and chairs sorta way, but who cares? You're not coming here on a date. You're coming here either to pick up pizza because you're craving Pizza Mayven... AGAIN this week for some inexplicable reason (!), or because you're wanting to eat in a restaurant where you can hang with the fam without worrying about whether your kid will end up running around, screaming, crying, laying on the floor or otherwise carrying on. Being a Kosher pizza spot, there are lots of Jewish families here, which gives it a very neighborly, family feel. FYI I couldn't find an official list of its hours online, but as far as I can tell it's closed after 2pm or so on Fridays and all of the day Saturday. Don't quote me on that, but definitely call first if you're thinking of making a stop in Friday or Saturday. This place is EXCELLENT! The pizza here is great (it would be great if it wasn't Kosher too.) All of the ingredients are fresh and the sauce is delicious. The owner (who others are referring to as "The Old Man") and his wife are Bobov Chasidim who moved to the neighborhood years ago from Boro Park, Brooklyn and run a very heimishe restaurant. The service is excellent and the other items on the menu are just as good as the pizza. The decor is dated, but who cares...I go to a restaurant for the food not the decor. Give Pizza Mayven a try, if you don't like it then you never need to take any restaurant advice from me ever again ;) read more
