Sadly, unimpressed by their calzones; more dough than fillings. Their pizza is alright. Their food service is a long wait.

We have eaten all across Western WA with many disappointing recommendations but this one blew us away. First things first. Make a reservation. There is almost always a wait and cant imagine how long it would be without one. Great small place with an electric vibe as soon as you walk in. It has that homey chaotic feel as it is a smaller place, very busy but still very inviting. We were met by Papa who is hilarious and just sets the tone for the experience here. All of the staff are very engaging and have wonderful personalities as well as are very proficient in their positions. This place is very much dinner and a show. It was great just watching the mechanics of how everyone worked together and interacted with each other as well as customers. We sat at the bar and I ordered a drink while my wife ordered a handmade lemonade. (she does not like the sugary ones from the gun so the bartender made her one from scratch-she loved it). There are 2 menus, the traditional menu and the specials board. We were served homemade bread with oil and balsamic and also ordered a Caesar salad to split for a starter. I ordered the lasagna from the traditional menu and my wife ordered the Pork Belly Cannelloni from the specials board, both were absolutely delicious. You can tell they make their pastas from scratch as the texture was spot on. The flavor combination for the cannelloni was something I had never had and might be my favorite pasta dish I have ever had. We couldn't finish the portions that were given to us and we were excited to get to enjoy them again at home the next day. We did order the Creme Brulé Cheesecake to take as well and that was also delicious. We got the check and had to relook at the bill to make sure they got everything. For the level and quality of food, we expected the bill to be much higher. Overall we cannot recommend this place enough. We live in Renton and would easily make the drive to eat here in Anacortes with no hesitation. This is our current new favorite restaurant and can't wait to come back.

I perused the menu on a large chalkboard and chose the Emmer Spaghetti and added the optional meatballs. While waiting for my meal I discovered that they might have cannolis! I asked about getting a cannoli and was told that they would need to see if there was enough ingredients for one. I was in luck and was able to order one! The spaghetti was very well prepared and cooked. I enjoyed the flavor of the sauce and the homemade pasta. The meatballs were the highlight in my opinion! The background music was playing "Celebration" by Kool and the Gang and there's a line that asks "what is your pleasure" and I thought "right now? This meatball and the spaghetti!" Then I was handed my cannoli and I was amazed at the flavors and textures! One end was dipped in chocolate chips and the other end in pistachio pieces ! The filling had a slight citrus flavor and of course the shell was nice and crispy. I was very pleased with the meal and dessert. In the photo you may notice that my spaghetti was served in a plastic container. Keep in mind The Chef in the Black Bandana just opened 8 days ago and they are still working through the startup process. In fact, their official Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting is April 26th.

I got the Jamaican mussels with linguine added, and oh my gosh, I cannot even explain to you, the flavor, explosion and deliciousness. I was a little afraid when I saw Jamaican because I actually have a sensitivity to black pepper of all things which usually means I can't eat anything that has jerk in the name which is what my mind immediately went to. These mussels, however, were so delicately flavored, but also so intensely flavored with the mixture of Jamaican spices and coconut milk and with some fresh fruit like mango added in. It was absolutely phenomenal. My mom got the crabcakes entree which comes with a salad. Their Caesar dressing is definitely homemade. It made me close my eyes in ecstasy. Then my cousin got the garlic, shrimp prawns - I think that's what it was called. He said his dish was absolutely delicious as well. The view is right on the water and the staff were attentive and friendly. I will keep bringing friends and family who visit here over and over so I get to experience it again too!

Being Friday and bring 5pm, we probably should have made reservations, but decided against it. We did get one of the last two unreserved tabes, the "reserved" tables being at the window overlooking Penn Cover. It was a beautify evening and Mt. Baker was looking glorious, as we entered a full dining room. Odd, there was no one at the bar. We sat down and the first thing I noticed was the young child behind me screaming and crying and the parents ignoring the tantrum. After about 10 minutes the child was taken outside but this wasn't how I wanted to start a nice Friday dinner. But that isn't a knock against the establishment or the service, just an observation. We ordered a round of drinks, the Stoller Family rose and a pilsner from 7 Seas Brewing, along with the calamari appetizer. Drinks came quickly and were followed a few minutes later by our calamari. This gave me time to look at the art (for sale) hanging on the wall, lots of neat wood carved pieces that lent to decor of the place. The appetizer arrived and it was a nice size order of deep fried calamari and a pink side sauce for dipping. The breading was flavorful, crispy and not too heavy, lending to the flavor of the squid. The sauce as expected kicked it up a notch with just a hint of spice. Dinner, I opted for the fish and chips, because you can never good wrong with such a simple, filling dish. The white fish was thick and flaky, coated in a simple batter that was "GBD," golden, brown, delicious! The chips were actually thin fries and not the thick cut chips I was hoping for. Overall the chips were average, but the fish was wonderful with a dash of malt vinegar on top. My girlfriend's mom got the crab cakes and a side salad. Very generous with the crab and light on unnecessary fillers. Both cakes were lightly breaded and fried, served with a simple sauce and lemon wedge. All in a nice meal with good seafood. Our server was quite attentive, especially in a crowded setting, we never felt hurried and enjoyed our time together.

The vibes inside are immaculate as a kind of barnyard chic and the pizza topping combos are hyperlocal and fascinatingly unique you have to give them a try. Unfortunately my first time trying a pizza place must always be a simple cheese pizza so that's what I ended up with this time. The crust is cooked a little extra charred which can work well as long as the dough is moist enough, oiled well, and the pizza has enough flavor overall to balance it out. I wouldn't say that was the case here but I think there are many, particular NY/NJ/CT area folks who might prefer this style. Overall the pizza was just OK for me, a bit too dry from the extra cooktime/char and maybe dough hydration, the sauce not being as refreshing and bright as I like, the cheese as bursting with creamy milkiness as I want on these types of pies. But it still hits the spot and I'm happy I stopped here at such a cool little spot on such a great island. But for Whidbey Island pizza I'll probably stick with Village Pizzaria for now. Who knows, I didn't get to try the cocktails here so may need to come back for that. I did also get a smoked carrot dish that was a bit underwhelming for how cool it sounded, just a bit too much acid and fat without a lot of spice and flavor to balance everything out. Still may come back for the dinner-only pastas, I'm simply too intrigued by the chic menu recipes and chillaxing vibes here.
