Previous PT providers have not taken into consideration how weak I am and push me beyond my capacity to perform. I decided to call in advance and ask the manager if he felt he could work with me given the problems I have had. He called me back the same day after the clinic was closed and spent at least 20 minutes listening and talking to me. He assured me he could adapt their normal work for me. I had my appointments with the Manager of both locations, Chris. He has progressed me very slowly and in three months, I never been hurt. Our appointments address several regions of my body and I am delighted to report that I have improved in my time there. It is not unusual to see him give instructions to one person while checking on another. He's a hands-on manager and it seems the place runs smoothly. He has hired two new physical therapists and he described that he would mentor them as necessary. I'm so glad that I found Phoenix Rehab. Excellent place in every way

In addition to their deep skills as physical therapists, the staff operates as a consistently cheerful, cohesive and supportive team. They create a clean and orderly environment of friendly care, greeting every customer by name when they arrive. Katie always checked in with me right away to ask how I was doing, and orient me to the day's activities. Kudos to everyone, including Chris, Megan, Ruth, Kali (for home visits), and the front desk receptionists who frequently pitch in as needed to get things done. I highly recommend Phoenix at Tenleytown to everyone who is looking for talented practitioners who know how to create a delightful customer experience with PT!

The pt started out good but made me feel uncomfortable when she was asking when would I be going back to the the orthopedic to get more imaging. I didn't know that was her decision. Two of the PT practices were medical factories, processing dozens of people at a time with one-size-fits-all exercises, regardless of the underlying problem. The third PT practice seemed better because it was small, but the "doctor" I saw was a charlatan with and a crook. I was ready to give up on physical therapy, but was persuaded, by my orthopedist and friends, to try again. This time I was recommended to Nova Care, a national firm with an office in friendship heights, and what a difference! This company has the highest ethical and medical standards, with an extremely professional and skilled staff. There are generally two therapists on duty at a time, seeing no more than three or four patients, so that the patient receives close attention at all times. Exercises are focused on the problems presented, and easily changed to reflect the patient's level of tolerance and needs. I can't believe how much better this company is than others in the field. Barri Schnall, my current therapist, is amazing, both in her focus on current problems (spinal stenosis, affecting both shoulder and hip) and interest in other problems that turn out to be related.

Michelle approaches things with listening and communication, and the thorough initial consult included a first session. Wow! I had myofascial release therapy (there is a lot of information about this on her website, and she also explains it very well in person). I could feel the 'release' and found the sessions greatly helpful both in the moment and over time. Michelle's approach is quite unique in the DC landscape for recuperation or self-care. Great, progressive practice as others attested! TIP--the online booking shows appointments each week, with flexibility according to your schedule and needs.

Michelle is a brilliant detective and excels at finding the root of problems rather than just treating symptoms. I do a lot of powerlifting, Olympic weightlifting, and running, and she's helped me with both acute injuries as well as overall recovery and maintenance. Michelle has guided me through back injuries, a torn ACL (avoided surgery thanks to her!), tendinitis, bursitis, a concussion, and everything in between. Not only is Michelle a top notch physical therapist, but she's also incredibly thoughtful in how she approaches her practice. She has a very holistic approach to what she does and her knowledge of food allergies, supplements, and the effect of stress on the body have also been quite helpful for me. Who knew a physical therapist could help fix what your GI doctor gave up on? I happen to also be a public health grad student and personal trainer, and she is always magnificently patient when I pepper her with questions and bounce research ideas off her in my sessions. Everyone needs a Michelle in their health arsenal.

I've had much better experiences with subsequent AT teachers. Gabrielle doesn't listen well and gets offended if you disagree with her and exhibits very childish behavior. There was a day she sat in a chair for 30 minutes because she said she was too frazzled to work because I was expressing something to her about pain I experienced and she was disagreeing about the pain that I had, and trying to tell me it was all in my head and the type of pain I have doesn't make sense. I disagreed and she said she felt attacked, sat in silence saying she could not work the way she was feeling and then charged me for an entire session for which most of it she just sat down in a chair staring into space. Definitely would not recommend her to anybody especially people of color, it's clear she does not work with us often and she exhibits a lot of white fragility tactics and microaggressions. if you disagree with her she says she feels attacked and gets upset like a child. I literally had to explain to her that I was not attacking her I was merely expressing my difference in opinion. She then admitted that I did not attack her but she still felt attacked and was unable to focus to work, this happened on more than one occasion. The first time I chalked it up to her having a bad day and gave her another chance but when it occurred again I decided to not return. An AT instructor should be emotionally regulated before working with students and she definitely is not. She is also very overpriced, other AT instructors in the area charge about $100 or so per session and she is charging double for that but offering subpar service. DO NOT RECOMMEND!

Our sessions focused on empowering me with the tools and knowledge to get over some difficult knee pain. One day, she even dropped what she was doing to help me with a completely unrelated but critical health issue, and followed up later with a phone call to ensure I was still okay. She is an important fixture to the Van Ness community in DC and I would highly recommend her.
