Saw the bras hanging as we walked in, made me chuckle. We were seated right away, in a small room with a fair amount going on. I picked the Jim Morrison along with the fries and lovely K had the Janis Joplin, also with fries. Both choices were a very good sized portion with a good amount of fries. The JM stated it's spicy, and it was indeed so. The JJ is also a good sized portion, but it had too much going on for K. What really let the meal down was the fries. They were not hot, and had been cooked too long. The outside was crispy with a good crunch, but the interior was not what we were looking for. Could have been epic with nice fries, but they missed the mark by just a bit.

Got the order wrong and had to ask for an item she missed when we originally ordered. Everything was such an effort for her god love her. We both had the full Irish which included two big slices of toast and one teeny tiny pat of butter each. This is supposedly an Irish pub remember?? I asked for extra butter for each of us and one was produced and had to ask for the other yet again. Imagine the shock when the bill came and we were charged for the "extra butter". Never EVER in any restaurant in any country I've been to have I ever seen a charge for two butters for two slices of bread!!! Well the only smile of the day came was when she was waiting for the tip screen to be picked. My dad is in no way a techie and paid the bill. We did not leave a tip because of the absolute meanness to charge for butter and her attitude. Unbelievable.

The pub is situated a few minutes' walk from the castle and cathedral at the top of the hill in Hradčany, just opposite the Loreto church. It's easy to find as the exterior has impressive baroque murals. Inside, it's rather plainer, with painted walls, simple, dark wooden benches and a tiled floor. Although it's location inevitably means that it's full of tourists, it makes few concessions to them: this is essentially a beer bar, and the main draw is its excellent Velkopopvicky Kozel beer, in light (tmavé) and dark (světly) variants, as well as Pilsner Urquell, all served in 0.5l glasses. They serve a limited range of hearty Czech snacks, including some vegetarian items (various forms of cheese). The staff are efficient and workmanlike rather than especially friendly; expect a hard stare if you just have one beer! Locals tend to sit at the front, with visitors at the back. However, the old-fashioned feel means that it is one place you really ought to try is you're in the area, and it makes a great antidote to the touristy crush of the castle. If it's open, stroll afterwards to the Loreto church, one of Prague's most over-the-top Baroque creations and containing the body of St Wilgefortis - a few beers to fortify you first may not be a bad idea, in fact! It's quite a hike up the hill to the Hradčany area, but trams 22 and 23 will take you (via a scenic, circuitous route) to within a few hundred metres, making the climb for you!

Okay, so they give you a little "fob" with your menu. Some may think this like an ordering number or tracker etc. lol nope - turn it on and explore baby! The whole menu is a map to explore and it's as fun as you want. The staff will help guide you if you ask . If you want a great drink and a little reminder keepsake dare I recommend remember remember

The server drops off dark felt bound drink menus and then gives little Black light flashlights. As you open the menu, you're greeted with white writing on black pages with three flavor profiles per drink. The backlight revels more about your cocktail of choice based on a flavor profile. A lot of the drinks seem cool and many have a very dark liquor profile. The drinks are a little pricy-as expected in a handcrafted speakeasy very little seating. Overall, a really cool place that didn't seem very touristy, but made our experience extra special as it felt like a spot only the locals knew. Drinks are made strong, so pick your profile with intention.

It is indeed in a touristy area, but after having walked a few dozen miles in Prague already, on the last night, close proximity and convenience trumps everything else. We made a reservation online and when we arrived we were promptly led to a table in white tablecloth right next to the window in the dining room. For appetizer, we shared a dozen SNAILS - yes, in Prague, even in a French restaurant, they call them snails, not escargots. In fact, Central Europeans had a long tradition of eating snails even before the French made this delicacy famous. The escargots, ok..., snails, were cooked in rich garlic butter mixed with parsley (that's what the green stuff is just in case you are wondering.) They were delicious, and almost as good as those from the streets of Paris. The CHATEAUBRIAND was brought to us on a carving board together with bone marrow, side dishes of vegetables and mashed potatoes, and a sauce boat full of yummy peppery gravy. Our server carved the beef nicely and plated the dishes meticulously at our table side. The beef was melt-in-your-mouth tender and very flavorful. We could easily tell this was top quality filet mignon and nothing less than the best cut. For the side dishes, I particularly liked the mashed potatoes which tasted like they were made with fresh and naturally creamy potatoes. The peppercorn sauce was rich but not overwhelming, subtly complementing the natural flavor of the steak. Service was 5-star throughout our meal. It began with a complimentary "water melon with bacon" palate cleanser, and ended with complimentary house-made chocolate at the conclusion of our meal. Service was attentive, friendly, prompt but not rushed, and literally white-glove throughout the night. You want me to give you a reason for visiting Brasserie La Gare, or Prague in general? This meal, including two large beers and two glasses of reasonably good wine, cost less than CZK 2,000 which is about US$90. Wanna go?

At first we were thrilled with our server's recommendations and excellent attention, as well as with the cocktails, food, and gorgeous ambiance. The problem occurred toward the end of the evening. Our server cleared our dishes and asked if we were interested in dessert. We said we would be happy to consider the choices. He left us and got busy with another party, which we understood, so waited for about 20 minutes. One of his colleagues passed by and we mentioned that we were waiting. We saw her tell our server, who still did not make time to check in with us. After waiting even longer, one member of our party--originally from England, which becomes important later--got up, found the server, and asked if we could get the dessert menu. Finally he came to our table. He did not apologize for the wait (all he needed to say was that he had gotten swamped, and we would have been fine with that small explanation). Instead, he said, "The hardest part is waiting," mentioned there is no actual dessert menu, then left and came back with a board showing us some of the desserts, explaining what they were. He was obviously irritated with us and so we opted to end the evening and asked for the check. He brought it quickly and pointedly explained that we could tip him. We were uninterested in rewarding his rudeness and did not tip him. Then he insultingly said to our English friend, who was paying: "I didn't think you had an American accent." This was so unprofessional. We go out of our way to be gracious when we travel, not wanting to be seen as "ugly Americans." We tip almost everyone and generously. Your server's increasing rudeness and growing irritation with us was completely uncalled for, and we are so disappointed to have this memory of an otherwise wonderful few days in your beautiful city.
