    Preshow at headquarters

My husband and I are big fans of opera, and we were hoping to catch a show while visiting Pittsburgh. Although our visit was scheduled before the new season started, we hit the jackpot when we learned their Rising Stars event was the same weekend of our visit, and get this, it was free! What?! Yes, free, thanks to the RAD program (county sales tax dollars that support local parks, sports, arts/cultural programs). Simply call or e-mail the opera to put your name on the guest list, and you're in! And they have lots of other low cost/free events--concerts in the park, farmers market, and brown bag rehearsal lunches at headquarters. If you are a local, take advantage! The Rising Stars event was held at headquarters, and the agenda for the evening consisted of 6 young resident artists singing their favorite arias and then singing an aria selected by the panel (the opera staff). The resident artists--Taylor Raven, Andy Berry, Shannon Jennings, Eric Ferring, Claudia Rosenthal, Leah De Gruyl, and Brian Vu. Thereafter, the audience got to vote on what aria/artist they wanted to hear as the final one. While the votes were tallied (using their mobile app and also the old fashioned way), the host of the event interviewed the artists about their education, what they did over the summer, how they were adjusting to their new homes in Pittsburgh, and what productions they would be participating in during the upcoming season. All of the artists performed beautifully, and it was interesting to see/hear how a change in the song/aria selected by the panel showcased a different aspect of their voices and theatrical persona. They were all equally charming and gracious when interviewed. And by popular vote, Taylor Raven, a mezzo-soprano, was the the audience choice for final aria for the evening. Congrats Taylor Raven! Isn't that a perfect name for an opera singer? Keep a look/ear out for her and the other resident artists as their stars are on the rise! Thank you Pittsburgh Opera and the resident artists for allowing us to attend this event. It was definitely a highlight in our vacation, and has left us wanting more and wishing we were here for the regular season.

It is so great that Pittsburgh has such a fantastic opera with a variety of different shows. The singing is always fantastic and the acting is too. You never feel like it is too snobby or esoteric because of the detailed descriptions in the programs and the translated lyrics above the stage. I look forward to seeing many more shows!

We should all try the opera once in awhile. The Pittsburgh Opera's Florencia en el Amazonas was a masterful production. From the moment the curtains opened to the beautiful staging, to the end (where I won't enter a spoiler), this opera was wonderful and reasonably accessible to those of us who are not regulars. It's always a pleasure to attend an event at the Benedum, and with the orchestra and talented cast, the theater lent this event a magical aura. While I did not have a cocktail there, I thought that the second floor bar was nicely done and seemed to be handling the crowd well. I admit that I rely on the subtitles projected above the stage. At times, from our seats on the floor, this put a little strain on my neck, so maybe next time I would choose seats a little further back.

    Cisca - brilliant performance!

The Benedum itself is a magnificent venue to attend an opera, they have done a wonderful job restoring this historic building.

The door is next to Creative Reuse's on N Lexington Avenue. On the second Saturday of every month, the Pillow Project invites people to come and enjoy a lounge atmosphere of dance, live jazz music, and performances involving mixed-media. Alongside that, the space is used for many other events as well, each group giving it its own special charm. I've seen classes, clothing drives, photoshoots, and many other types of events use the loft. The space itself is gorgeous, with the modern coolness you'd expect from a loft belonging to a performance art troupe, combined with the history of Pittsburgh - since it is attached to Construction Junction, you can be sure that just about everything up here has been repurposed. The large windows let tons of natural light in, and the hardwood floors are gorgeous. Scattered over the space there are a few extremely unique pieces of art including a busted up mattress hanging on the wall and a laptop with a tree growing out of it. There is a large bar off to one side infront of two small openings that look down over Construction Junction. Old couches and tables are scattered throughout the space for seating and a small raised platform, infront of the multimedia control center, is also sometimes used for seating. The only problem with the space is that it is somewhat of a weather permitting space - You really feel it in here when it's hot or cold outside. There are huge heaters on the ceiling for the winter but they're very uneven, so beneath them it's burning, and not too far away it's cold again. But that's what you get when you're in such an old building, it's a really minor complaint. There is also a small waiting area downstairs right inside the door. So if you're looking to catch a cool performance, come on the second Saturday of any month and check it out. If you're looking for a neat event space, be sure to ask the Pillow Project for details. And now I can finally check in to the right place

This is a lovely venue for events such as weddings, showers, dinner/holiday parties and similar events. Located on Banksville Road it's easy to get there by car, bus, trolley, etc. They have an area called Backstage at The Boiler Room which is home to live music performances. The lobby is lovely and elegant. Heated four seasons porch, courtyard with fire pits, fountains and more. Food is standard fare for banquet hall facility. Though standard fare everything is served cooked to perfection. Meats are juicy and tender, pasta not over cooked, sauces flavorful and not dried out.

After being there, I just have to let people know what they are missing out on! First of all, there is ample parking, a rarity in Pittsburgh. Second, location. Just outside the Fort Pitt tunnels and slightly down Banksville Road, it is minutes away from the city, seconds from two hotels, and within 45 minutes to an hour of the airport. (Note: If you are going for the first time, be aware that it is not on Banksville Road proper, but on an extension behind the Days Inn.) Now for the space itself. The parking lot is slightly rugged, but I think the overall ambiance makes up for that, especially since they offer valet parking. There is a sweet little gazebo on the lower outer level, which looks as if it could be a great photo spot. The upstairs features a ballroom with a raised platform, a multi-use room with a beautiful marble bar (and efficient bartenders), and a stunning covered porch area. There are screens throughout which can be used for slideshows or, as we used them, to keep updated on the Oscars throughout the evening. I did not get to look at the downstairs area, but given the quality of the rest of the venue, I'm certain it would not disappoint. I thoroughly enjoyed my evening at this venue and will keep it mind for future event needs!
