I saw Hedwig at Greer Cabaret Theatre on Sunday. They changed the script to include Pittsburgh references but decided to leave in the line "and the colored girls sing..." in reference to Lou Reed's song Walk on the Wild Side. There were millions of other lines they could have chosen to reference Rock N Roll culture. Why choose this line? Why have white actors say that line? Regardless of who Lou Reed was referencing in the song, describing people as "colored" has a very specific meaning in the context of the United States history. Furthermore, he has omitted the word "colored" from the song and has other questionable songs in regards to race. City Theatre is comprised of a predominantly white board, white staff, and this show was primarily white actors with a largely white audience. I reached out on Sunday and asked for them to refund my tickets. I have not heard back from them.

The building is the former home of The Tree of Life Synagogue that was converted to have stages and meeting rooms. The only thing missing is parking, as it typical Pittsburgh this address relies mainly on street side parking with only a dozen or so off street options. They are supported by patrons, subscribers and individuals in the community and with lots of passionate volunteers so like many other community theaters they don't have big budgets but they elaborate productions but thanks to the efforts of many they put together some very entertaining shows. A fun theater with really good seats from all around. I like the smell of fresh hot popcorn when you walk through the front doors.There's good restrooms on the second floor with a water fountain as well as a number of large round tables with chairs for functions, gatherings or parties. There's a small office and am area with a piano and comfy couches & chairs for lounging or waiting and enough extra room for lots of potential other uses. Downstairs there's several seating areas for waiting and even another piano and you can bottled waters and other soft drink choices at the concession. There's no hot food but mostly nuts, candy bars and of course there's fresh popped theater popcorn. (there's a large coveted porch out from with ledges for sitting & smokers congregated here during intermission) We seamlessly purchased our tickets online and the box office found us on the list right away. She showed us a chart of where are seats are and gave us good information about the theater and how to find everything. (I hear that she will be in November's upcoming production of "and the winner is") My daughter is Lucy and is performing "You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown" My sweetheart and I have traveled from New Orleans on the train for this big event . We sat in the second row on the isle for two nights and in the front row for the Sunday and final performance, but every seat has an nice unobstructed view. You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown was a delightful production of the Broadway musical with a very talented cast of five. The music was performed by several very good musicians on piano, drums, bass and woodwinds that perfectly supported the musical numbers and accented much if the play throughout. There was lots of laughs and claps throughout and even awes when the lights come up with Lucy sitting behind her iconic psychiatrist's booth and starry eyed youngsters when Snoopy appears on his so with camel. I was very impressed with the level of talent, production and dedication by all that pulled together an excellent presentation of this classic work. I have watched the original and later animated versions that were inspired by the play and I have also viewed scenes from the hit Broadway musical and I think the show that I just saw live (3) consecutive days was my favorite. I might be a little biased but I sincerely & absolutely adored this production at Mckeesport Little Theater and I have seen all the hard work & dedication that goes into a production like this from some very dedicated and hard working folks and I highly recommend supporting them!

Bravo to the little theater that could as they celebrate their 56th season!…read more The road to number 56 has not always been a smooth one, but thanks to dedicated leadership, relentless volunteers, and talented performers, McKeesport Little Theater lives on. Their small beginnings in 1960 led them to purchasing a church in 1963 which was then transformed into a viable playhouse setting. After 10 seasons, a fire totally destroyed the theater mid-productions. Performances continued at various community locations up until 1974, when a former synagogue was purchased by the group. Major levels of fundraising transformed this synagogue into the intimate neighborhood theater it is today. I have seen several performances here, and always look forward to each seasons productions. McKeesport Little Theater offers live entertainment for both young and old.

The production was terrific, the actors were well rehearsed and spot on with lines and starring. Fun night! The stage is in the round, which makes the audience feel closer to the action. The actors make an effort to move and turn so you are able to see & hear them well no matter where you sit. Very professional in my opinion. Orders are taken when you are seated (both tables and single seats are available), for desserts during interviews. The money is collected, and glass plates, metal silverware, and drink glasses help make this a pleasant event! Make reservations, out show was almost sold out. Enjoy!!!

It makes me so proud to see the talent in this city whenever I attend one of their shows. I guarantee you that if you check back each season you'll find at least one show to enjoy. Every year their line-up changes and it always features an incredible variety of shows. I've seen a classics such as "Antony and Cleopatra" to the interesting (but potentially uncomfortable) "In the Next Room (or The Vibrator Play)." My outright favorite evening with PICT was during a premiere of a play named "Our Class," which was an incredibly shocking but important play about, sadly, real events: a WWII mass murder of the Jewish community living in a town in Poland. No one wanted to speak during or after that show, and the actors handled the roles and portrayal of both inhumane actions and traumatic events incredibly and impressively well. Kudos to them and all of PICT for tackling such an imposing but important project. I have plans to see at least one more if not two more PICT performances this year; not once have they disappointed me, and their contributions to the theater scene in this city are always outstanding. They do several a year at the Byham and also have some at their headquarters in the West End. They also have several children's productions every year and while it is obvious physically that they are student performers, the quality is top notch. They also have a wonderful educational component. They offer classes throughout the school year (everything from dance to musical theater and even audition techniques). They offer both evening and weekend class options. PMT also hosts annual summer camps that start fairly young and run through the high school years. One of the great things about their camps is that they are four weeks long (three weeks of a standard camp day, one week of tech week). Many kids need consistency in the summer and this is one of the few summer camp options that offers is. The instructors are all wonderful with the kids and everything is well organized with efficient and plentiful communication. The only slight downside is that parking can be a challenge when attending something at their West End location. There is a municipal lot down the street and plenty of street parking, but you may need to park a few blocks away, so prepare in advance for that. Highly recommend them for taking in a show or participating in their classes or camps!

Even though we were quite early for the show, there was no one around, directing us in terms of where to park and it was quite confusing, being that we had never been there before. We ended up getting very turned around and Wound up 3 miles away from the theater again after passing it... That's our fault, but still better signage would be helpful. The other reason is that, as somebody with a visual impairment, the theater is quite hard to navigate. There is incredibly little space in between each row of seats, and as somebody with a vision impairment, and being plus sized, that can be a very big challenge when it comes to navigating during the appropriate times during our visit. Again, though, those are just our experiences with the venue... This rating does not at all reflect the performance, because it was 10 stars if that is an option! The venue is beautiful and it's definitely a piece of beautiful Pittsburgh history. Just a few touchups could be made! Keep doing amazing things, PMT!

The Old Schoolhouse Players (OSP) is a community theater group established in 1992 with the primary goal of bringing quality theatrical performances to the Hickory and Washington County areas in Pennsylvania. Over the years, OSP has presented over 100 dramatic and musical productions, enriching the local arts scene and fostering a strong sense of community through a shared love of theater. OSP was formed in 1992 by a group of passionate individuals who wanted to create a platform for local actors, singers, dancers, and theater enthusiasts to come together and showcase their talents. The theater group is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to nurturing the arts within the community and providing opportunities for members to develop their skills and passion for theater. OSP stages their productions in the Bud Allison Auditorium, located within the historically preserved Mount Pleasant Township Community Center at 20 Wasbash Avenue in Hickory, Pennsylvania. This charming venue offers an intimate theater experience for audiences and performers alike, with comfortable seating and excellent acoustics. Restrooms are downstairs, but they do have a handicap-accessible restroom on the first floor on the theater level. Notable Productions: Over the years, the Old Schoolhouse Players have presented a diverse range of theatrical productions, including popular musicals, dramatic plays, and original works. Some notable past productions include "The Sound of Music," "A Christmas Carol," "The Wizard of Oz," and "Our Town," among many others. Each production is carefully selected to appeal to a wide audience and showcase the talents of the theater group's members. I attended several performances here in May of this year, for a great production of Clue. The internationally popular game is a fun-filled musical adaptation that brings the world's best-known suspects to life and invites the audience to help solve the mystery: who killed Mr. Boddy, in what room, and with what weapon. The audience receives forms to help them deduce the solution from clues given throughout the fun-filled evening. Three audience members choose from cards representing the potential murderers, weapons, and rooms; there are 216 possible solutions! Only one hard-nosed female detective is qualified to unravel the merry mayhem. Comic antics, witty lyrics, and a beguiling score carry the investigation from room to room. Even after the culprit confesses, a surprise twist delights the audience. This colorful crowd-pleaser was devised by the authors of Murder at Rutherford House and other popular interactive entertainments. My daughter gave a fabulous portrayal that brought Miss Scarlet to life, creating a multi-dimensional character that was both enigmatic and charming. Catherine's portrayal of Miss Scarlet in Clue was nothing short of extraordinary. Her undeniable talent, beautiful vocals, charisma, and dedication to her craft made her a true force to be reckoned with on stage. She really rocked the blonde look, too! Also performing was my son-in-law, who not only sang but also danced with Catherine, which were my favorite moments. Alan's portrayal of Mr. Green in Clue was nothing short of outstanding. His hard work and passion for theater shone through, as he showcased his undeniable talent, charisma, and commitment to his craft, making for one of my most unforgettable performances that was both dynamic and energetic and lots of fun! Bottom Line: My experience with the Old Schoolhouse Players' production of Clue was truly unforgettable. The outstanding performances by the cast showcased their talent, dedication, and passion for theater.
