When I was a freshman at OOooooooooooooakes College this is where I bought my first (and last) water pipe. The guys from Biko Dorm went with me and it was a rite of passage. It was a proud proud moment in their eyes. Its name was Sherman named after Sherman's Lagoon (the cartoon). It was a fishy and the cutest thing EVER. Their water pipe selection is impressive here and the quality is amazing. They also sell hookahs, papers and tobacco products (cloves etc.). Sherman lasted for nine years until my friends finally broke it (this was not used everyday--and it had been collecting dust in my drawer since I 99.5% ceased water pipe activity after becoming a teacher/counselor). I still go in here for kicks, although I don't need a huge college poster that says "marijuana-- hey at least it's not crack" in my apartment. They have a small selection of shirts and belts... shades etc. Since I am older not so much into it, but it is always fun to peer in. What I really love about this place is when they have their glass blowers doing live "shows" in the window. You can catch them in action if you are lucky in the afternoon. This place is definitely a staple in downtown, one of the remaining non- urban outfitter/corporate shops that has popped up downtown in the passed ten years. read more

Love love LOVE this smoke shop! Okay, so I'm from Fresno and a few months back I bought a broken e cig at a smoke shop over there, and the store had a strict no exchange policy and basically screwed me out of nearly $70. Pipeline, however, happily exchanged a quartz banger for us after we accidentally bought the wrong size, no questions asked. THAT is good service. I also once bought a pipe here that ended up breaking about 15 minutes after buying it. The shop gave us a 20% discount on our next one for the trouble. I am so pleased with the service here, and I can't wait to move out here and get away from all the crappy businesses in Fresno that would prefer to screw you out of your money. I'm pretty sure I should have paid rent here when I was in college. I practically lived here. I took my cousin here once so he could pick up some cigarettes and Mike, the manager at the time (not sure if he's still there) said hi to me. When we left, my cousin was like "so you know the manager of the smoke shop?" Their prices aren't the cheapest and they will not make a deal with you. Well this one takes me back. I use to go here all the time back in the day to pick up new pieces to smoke out of and although they have a lot of stuff to choose from in the back room the quality glass is overpriced. What they had that I loved buying was HUGE posters. Like 3 feet by 4 feet. Not sure if they still got em but they had Goodfellas, Scarface, Tupac, The Shining, that kinda thing. Gangster Flicks and Gangster Rap with a few 1/2 naked women as well. But HUGE posters. If you have to buy some new glass in Santa Cruz I couldn't tell you where to find some better priced product but it's certainly not here. Staff was always friendly. read more

I was visiting from out of town on a Sunday, and I heard good things about Pipeline's tapestries. My friend took me there, and as soon as we stepped in a man nicely greeted us. However, not even three steps in, a woman smoking from outside yelled to the man that they were closed. It was not past 6:50pm, and the shop closed at 7. We obliged and walked out, commenting on the lack of business inside the shop. The woman with the cigarette yelled after us, "we're not getting any business because we're closed" in the snarkiest, most condescending voice. I rated this business as one star because they didnt give us a chance to come inside during their "open" hours. read more

My sister used to go here back when downtown was sketch-central. I was little, so I'd just stare in wonderment at the psychedelic posters and innapropriate-content t-shirts and stickers. Now that I am a grown up and I'm old enough to enter the back room where they sell the tobaccy and the bongs, it is one of my fave places to pick up a new glass pipe or some flavored tobbacco for my hookah. Made a trip to this place every week as a freshman. Contemplated applying here to work cause I was here so much. I liked their custom pieces but what really drew me here was their display of ROORs back in the day. They also carry the best shisha (strawberry margarita starbuzz) and excellent self-lighting coals. If you're looking for a smoke shop in Santa Cruz, this is one worth checking out. Not the best location in downtown, but it's a pretty big store. They have a lot of items including tapestries, posters, and of course a bunch of items for your smoking pleasure. Whether or not I have something in mind to buy, I enjoy visiting the store to look at the cool stuff they have. Every time I've been here the staff has been super friendly, helpful, and patient. I went to 4 different pipe shops and got 4 totally different experiences. Pipeline WAY exceeded all the rest. Prices were more or less the same-ish as the other places, give or take $5/10, and they seriously wrote the book on customer service. I went in on a Saturday for a bubbler, and in addition to a good selection of bubblers, found this AMAZING art piece that was a shell with copper on it...hand blown locally. I was pretty much in love with it, but discovered there was a crack in it. The mellow girl behind the counter, Meghan (who was awesome) said they wouldn't want to sell something with a crack in it, so said she'd have her manager contact the blower on Monday and she'd call me and tell me whatever she found out. She did indeed call me as promised, and let me know that they'd gotten 2 (both one-of a kind, but all similar) new shell pieces by that same artist (who's studio was right around the corner) for me to choose from, and they were holding them for me until I could get down there. I came down at the end of the day, and discovered that the new pieces were even better than the first. They gave me a *SMOKIN* DEAL (no pun intended) on that piece AND the bubbler, which I also ended up buying. Someone posted are review in 2008 that said they don't make deals, they definitely did, and I found their generosity refreshing. I have never had such a fabulous experience at a smoke shop. Its a super laid-back place, but they seriously treat you right! *Also worth mentioning, I wasn't dressed "the coolest" when I went in, and as I crossed the street, I considered whether or not I'd get snubbed (hippy snobs are the worst, right?!) and I was pleasantly surprised that it didn't seem to make a difference. *Aaaaand I love that there are cats there, just chillin. Not in your face, but not unfriendly either. Take them or leave them if you are OR aren't a cat-person, but for me, it was fun that they were there. read more

A few months ago I went to Pip[e Line to purchase one of the better vaporizers for dry material and paid the premium price that it sells for everywhere. A month later it fails to perform as it should but it is another two months before I get back to the shop. The staff examines it and agrees that there is a problem and tells me the manufacturers warranty will cover it so I should give them a call. I, somewhat shyly, say that I hoped that in buying it here I could handle it here and after assuring me the owner would take care of it the next day choose to simply replace it on the spot. Right when you walk in the door the incense smell wonderful and makes you feel at home. The employees are very friendly and helpful.
