Same Same But Different - Menu

Same Same But Different

Same Same But Different was on my short list of places to visit for brunch during my trip to Bath;…read morefrom the rave reviews across every platform and the stunning food photos, I knew I had to check it out. The space itself has a hipster casual vibe, which is definitely a scene I'm comfortable in. Lots of wood and dark colors and fun light fixtures, there's even a few tables outside (but good luck snagging those during even remotely nice weather!). It's a relaxed atmosphere that's great for groups of friends, breakfast dates, or solo travelers looking to hide in a corner and study. If you're a fan of a bloody mary, definitely be sure to get one here! Unfortunately, in my opinion, both the food and the service were tremendously disappointing. I'll start with the former: I ordered the Vegetarian Breakfast that comes with a fried egg, grilled halloumi, mushrooms, baked beans, grilled tomato, spinach and hashbrowns. According to the menu, there's also unlimited toast and tea (or americano) when no substitutions, but neither of those options were apparently available to me. The food itself was plentiful, but unmemorable (and bland) compared to similar breakfasts I've had elsewhere. And the staff was, for lack of a kinder word, rude. Dismissive, too. It was actually the worst service I had during my entire trip, and it stinks when a place stands out for that, but that's what I'm gonna remember from SSBD.

La Flamenca

After living for six months in Andulasia as a student, I've been in pursuit of a decent Spanish…read moremeal ever since I returned to the UK. Upon entering La Flamenca, I was convinced I had found my final culinary resting place. The restaurant is situated in a white walled cavern, with moorish inspired tiling which really do look like an Andalusian pueblo. Of course, the usual matador tat calls to mind the tackier tourist restaurants of Spain's beautiful South, but that's a forgiveable sin. Why the two star rating then? Unfortunately positive first impressions soon melted away when we entered the restaurant which was almost entirely colonised by a twenty strong group of stag nighters dressed as bull and matadors. More than just making me cringe a little, it was also impossible to hear anything - the acoustics of the cave really don't lend themselves well to big parties as all sound just reverberates deafeningly round the room. So we moved into the bar area, which had a far more pleasant and convivial atmosphere. An acceptable bottle of Rioja ordered and we were just beginning on our starters (a tasty enough selection of cured meats), when lo and behold, our main course arrived all at once. The selection of tapas wasn't particularly warm and all tasted disappointingly like it had been premade and microwaved. Although the total bill wasn't wild, it still felt overpriced when the mis-timed service and mediocre food was taken into account. And so, my quest for a decent Spanish meal outside of Spain continues...

The food was delicious (can't remember everything that we sampled, but i do remember the grilled sardines, baked choritso, meatballs (particularly good), cheese & that thin salty ham & bread (great bread) and really good olives). I agree with Matstars in that the rioja is very good. Also had a cognac and espresso to finish off. I think that it cost around £100 for three of us, but we were on a pre-Christmas day out and weren't holding back (hmm, i might have had two cognacs, come to think of it!). It was a fabulous lunch and the perfect pit stop. I would go back anytime (and hope to see some Spanish dancing!).

They set me up with a tasting of various English wines and I was pleasantly surprised! The staff was quite knowledgeable about local wines and expanded my horizons on English winemaking! Nice crowd here too. A day later I returned with my wife just around their closing time and while they had indeed closed up for the night - the staff was having their end-of-week toasts - they STILL very hospitable allowed us to sit and enjoy a glass or 2, rather than simply asking us to leave. The place is a gem and I hope to be back!!

Wine list was extensive and fair, from inexpensive & really good to pricey and awesome. Generally, I think there was something for everybody on the wine list. Since this restaurant has mostly tapas style foods, we had multiple small dishes which were shared. I would highly recommend this approach as no one visitor/tourist could taste everything. We got close! Small plates: Snails and marrow Croquettes with andouille sausage Red mullet & anchovies Tomato and salad / with lots of seeds Risotto Cabbage - I couldn't do this one justice Dessert: Elderflower Pannacotte Berry mess All with a nice bottle of wine...or 2! We spent a wonderful evening with good conversation between ourselves and then with neighboring diners. The staff was very friendly and helpful in selections. The food was well prepared, quickly brought out in a proper order. Our young waitress was surprisingly knowledgeable about the wine. Don't miss this hidden gem!
