It's a quiet mountainous area, and while the aesthetics aren't what you'd get at some of the really primo tourist attractions, it is a pleasant and relaxing piece of nature. The upkeep of the infrastructure varied dramatically; some boardwalks looked quite new, while another platform was falling apart. I was on parts of the trails for the better part of an hour but I'm sure there was plenty more that I didn't get to. It is an area that has something to offer regardless of the season, and while I'd rather hit one of the big parks nearby, it was a nice place to spend a little time when I did.

For all you people driving purposefully through the NC mountains, as you drop into Murphy, don't…read moremiss the Murphy River Walk. Easy parking near downtown (I guess it's downtown at least it's town), take a sea-level stroll beside the river while breathing in the surroundings. An extra star for those black walnut trees dropping their wares on the path because we all need more walnuts in our lives. Add in some nice level paths for strolling and it's a fun trip. Allow 30 mins at least, take much longer if you want to enjoy the many twists and turns under the trees. Venture across the walking bridge to the other side of you date challenge the seasoned pros to a pickle match. We didn't dare on this trip since we'd already braved the Sasquatch. I hope to return for another stroll when in the big city again.

I was in a 4WD truck, so I did. Once you turn off the paved road (294) you're on a Horrible washed out single lane gravel road. if you make it, maybe half a mile you come to a fork in the road (shooting range left / tower right). I took the right obviously, now you're on an even worse and smaller road. if you make THAT maybe a quarter mile and you come to a gate. that gate can be opened but it won't do you any good because 100 yards in there's a 2 ft diameter tree across the road, so you're walking. When I tell you its straight up, it's STRAIGHT UP. no easy gentle slopes, its STRAIGHT up. 3/4 mile straight up you get to the intersection of 85 and 85A. another half a mile STRAIGHT up. The advertised "half mile" is now almost a mile and a half. if you're slightly out of shape or have kids, forget it. we turned around, this was not worth it. Not as advertised. worst decision I made since I got here. the bugs eat you up, carry a gun, you never know what you're going to see up there. Bad Idea. Horrible experience, the view from the moon wouldn't be worth that terrible hike.

As a family, we have done guided, self guided, and tandem kayaks. If you do the kayaks, I encourage you to get the wetsuits - even in July. Fast Rivers is a family owned business that really cares about your experience. Their guides are well trained and watch out for everyone on the river. They are super friendly and most importantly, experienced. On our last trip down the Nantahala, my husband went with my son in a two person kayak. He is not as experienced on rivers as me, but has done a few. He was thrown and was having a very hard time getting back into the boat and reoriented. One of the guides stopped his trip and took care of my husband and 12 year old. He talked him through the whole process and handled the whole situation perfectly. Again, can't say enough good things about Fast Rivers. Only suggestion- manually put their address in GPS. The old location showed up when I automatically clicked on an old link making us slightly late. The business is very close to where the rafts are put in on the Nantahala and on the other end of the river run from NOC.

They assisted the students with their life savers. They took their time explaining what to do and not to do while rafting and carrying the raft to the river. The students were excited to get here and go to the river. Now I am not the one to go on the river but the kids said it was EPIC!!! When you are in the area, check them out you will not be disappointed.
