What a cool diner to visit in down in Union Square. It's small, but on the corner, so you can't miss it. The staff were welcoming. The menu has great options to try. On one visit, I had turkey burger with sweet potato fries. The burger was moist and well seasoned. On a second visit, I had the hangover, which was packed with all kinds of goodness. Every layer of this dish was flavorful and savory. The salsa and jalapeño are the perfect touch to give this dish a kick. Stopped by Pinecrest Diner for a quick lunch with Ray, Dan, and Joanna on the afternoon of Thursday, October 17, 2024. This was my first time at the eatery. Ray picked me up to meet up with Dan and Joanna who waited for us at a booth table. We arrived around 12:15 PM to a pretty packed place. Luckily, we walked from the Hilton Union Square, so didn't need to look for parking. The diner does not have a private lot, so customers are at the mercy of the availability of metered street parking. This venue is located in an area of San Francisco that has gone downhill bigtime, so park at your own risk. The décor is old-school diner with booths and counter seating with a front row view of the cooks slinging diner classics. At the time of our visit, the place appeared fairly clean. Dan ordered a plate from the BREAKFAST menu, Ray had a BURGER or something from the HOT SANDWICHES section, and Joanna went with the SCHWARTZ HOT DOG ($16.70). My lunch consisted of an ICED TEA ($4.95) and TUNA SALAD ($16.95). My salad was not bad and the French fries from Ray and Joanna's plates were nicely golden, crispy, and tasty. The plastic disposable ramekin used for my salad dressing was a bit tacky, though. Service was meh. Definitely not deserving of more than a standard tip since they seemed to be a bit forgetful, and we had to constantly flag down a server for assistance. They were busy, yeah, but they really should be used to the peak time during lunch hours. Heads-up - their sign says that they are "OPEN 24 HOURS;" however, their website specifies that those hours are only for Wednesday, Thursday, Friday & Saturday of each week. They are open 7am - 11pm on the other nights of the week. Still, those are some good hours. read more

Great service in a pinch. This place is open 24 hours a day on Fridays and Saturdays. Was wandering around for a place to get food since I usually wake up at around 430am. They have lots of breakfast options - what a comprehensive menu. And Morena, the lovely lady that served me was such a doll. Their prices are seemingly pre-pandemic so it's hard to believe that they're a block away from Union Square. read more

This place is nice if it's not crowded. The line for a table is difficult to understand since they keep trying to move people so no one blocks the street or doorway. I think it's a people not following instructions thing, though. It sometimes takes a while to be seated. The food is great for a grill and there is a variety of choices. The bathrooms are downstairs and I'm not sure if they are ada accessable since it's not obvious from the seating area. It's great that it's open 24 hours, though. Pinterest Diner is straight out of the 80s - vinyl booths, huge menu, and no-frills service. It's casual, comfortable, and exactly what one would expect from a classic diner. I love old school diners in this place doesn't disappoint. I was seated immediately as it was 9 o'clock on a Friday morning and I ordered two eggs over easy bacon which came with hashbrowns and toast. I got sourdough and drizzled yolk all over the toast. it was busy and I can see why the food was really good. Service was great and the prices were good for San Francisco. Ambience is about what you expect from a diner, normal utilitarian dining. I will be back as it's right across the street from my hostel and I recommend you swing on in and get some old-school type meal at three in the morning. They're open 24 hours a day. read more

One of the only places open late in SF! They're open 24 hours from Thursday through Sunday and it's the perfect late night spot for food if you live in the neighborhood. Service is incredible and the food comes out fast. The servers are very kind, generous, and funny! Everything I've had has been good, not mind blowing food, but pretty much exactly what you would expect from a diner. Prices are super reasonable for the portions too. I've lived in San Francisco since 2009 and have never been to this place; now I understand why! Pretty generic diner menu with very mediocre dishes. And they must go super heavy on the salt since I was quite thirsty for like 4 hours after, even more so than when I down a big bowl of pho. Schwartz Hot Dog w/ Chili: It's a good way to taste their chili with an appropriate pairing. And there is indeed lots of chili! So much so that there's really no way to eat this with your hands, so just skip to a knife and fork. The hot dog is thick, more like a sausage. Not too much bread. Some shredded cheese in the mix. A solid diner choice. Chicken Piccata: Not pounded that thin and the coating was barely there too. Didn't have a strong piccata flavor (lemon, butter, capers). And there was weird salsa-like toppings on top. Strange pairing choice with baked potatoes and steamed veggies. Very overpriced for what it was. Onion Rings: Initially they forgot that I had substituted onions rings for my fries, so they I had to remind them. Not sure if they were rushed or if this is the normal state, but the onion rings were pretty bad. Mushy batter, just out of the frier, not even crispy. read more

Needed breakfast as we were waiting to rent a car at the Hilton around the corner. Happened upon this place and SO glad we did. Everyone working there made it run like a well oiled machine...and VERY friendly! The guy on the griddle doing it all was absolutely amazing. I'm one to rank breakfast places on their hash browns and these were the best I've ever had...hands down...cooked perfectly...every bite was crispy! Eggs, sausage, bacon, French toast, loved it all. Loved it so much we went back the next morning. Will definitely go here the next time we're in SF and highly recommend it. Well we're in SF and I let my wife pick a place for breakfast. My only criteria was it needed to be a diner. I didn't look at reviews or anything so I could make my own judgement. A simple place and great if you want a simple breakfast. Although I have a B+ for trying to make some unique items on the menu they fell short on the quality of components of the dish. The menu looked interesting, but my dish, the "Moose" could have been so better with use of home made biscuits ( versus Pillsbury) and country fried steak (versus frozen) . When I think about San Francisco, my memories don't really conjure up a bustling diner scene, outside of the classic (and kind of overhyped) Mel's, of course . But as a quintessential part of any Americana culinary map there are definitely more than a decent handful of indie diners sprinkled throughout the city; and Pinecrest is among the better of the bunch that I've been to. There is nothing unexpected here. This isn't elevated brunch or fancy fusion, it's straight up 60s style nostalgia-laden greasy spoon dishes well-executed with speed 24 hours a day (Wed-Sat, at least). Chicken fried steak and eggs is one of my favorite old school diner dishes and Pinecrest hits the mark on everything I'm looking for. I like my gravy on the side so I can preserve the crispness of the steak, and the salty, buttery bounty of food did not fail to deliver exactly what I hoped for. The French toast is also really good -- perfectly fluffy and eggy, these are two dishes that I have had dozens of times and can cross off the list at Pinecrest as being nailed with no notes. I also took the mozzarella sticks for a spin and they totally got the job done but were the least exciting thing I tried. I think 3.5 stars is actually perfect for this place but I am going to round up because it's the best I've had in the area and deserves praise for keeping quality up while being so close to one of the busiest tourist-trap hubs in this special city. read more

So it is 100% a diner - and that's what I'm rating it as. If you are looking for fancy plating/trendy/chic brunch spot - this is NOT it. But if you are looking for a diner and a solid meal with happy vibes, you've found the right spot. We went for brunch on a Sunday around 10am, and was pleasantly surprised we only had to wait about 5 minutes for a table. It was crowded, but they know how to move the tables. Service was quick all around. The menu is classic diner, with some interesting unique dishes. I got the "hangover" - has browns with Chili, eggs, etc. on top. I liked the concept. The chili itself was underwhelming as far flavor goes - but again, as I said, this is a diner. Totally up to diner standards. My friends who got the hash, an omelet, and eggs sunnyside up felt similarly about the flavor profiles. Portions are large. We were stuffed. My kids got sides of bacon and each side had 4 or 5 pieces (I should have had them split!). Ample refills on the coffee - which for diner coffee was actually decent. I love the Pinecrest. Being a musician, we always end up going for "breakfast" after a gig, which is usually like 1 or 2 in the morning. So many late-night places have reduced their hours but the Pinecrest is still accommodating with very late hours, several days a week. Since I'm going for breakfast, that's usually what I end up ordering, and I've enjoyed the country fried steak & eggs, the Denver omelet, the house omelet, and the hash & eggs. Portions are always generous and the food arrives hot and delicious. When I'm trying to watch it, I get the Greek salad which is always refreshing yet still filling. Service has always been good, and they always keep my coffee cup filled! The servers have all been very friendly and accommodating. So, thanks for being there for me in the wee hours, Pinecrest! Let me start by saying that I used to order about once a week from Pinecrest Diner bc I liked their food, I live nearby, and therefore the food would still be hot when it arrived. I always order hash browns, a weakness of mine. Recently, I noticed that they were mushy, soft, not cooked adequately or long enough. I called them about this, prior to one of my recent orders. They told me to put my request in "Special Instructions" in the Doordash app, which I did. Unfortunately, they completely disregarded my special Instructions and the hash browns were again undercooked, not crispy at all, mushy, and inedible. Accessibility: the front door is a difficult to get into as there is literally a column in the way, and the bathroom is NOT wheelchair accessible because there are 2 sets of stairs you have to go down (then back up) to get to the restrooms. Experience: the food was good. I liked my chicken tenders, and my family likes the Hangover meal. The price is okay, and the service was good. The bathroom downstairs does have roaches, though. 24hours, generous food portion, safe neighborhood of SF? What more can you ask for! This place seems to be always pack and rightfully so. My partner and I came here for lunch. Ordered the Chicken Pesto and Grilled Turkey sandwich; priced well and we both couldn't finish and had to grab the leftovers for later. We previously went to another sub place nearby. Thought we could share a sub/sandwich, I'm a pretty small girl and don't tend to eat too big of a portion but boy was the size of the sub a joke for what we were charged for. Service was pretty rude too. This place though, hospitality gets an A+. Can't beat the price and you'll be guaranteed full. Classic diner! Pinecrest Diner located downtown SF is a 24 hour diner and a spot that everyone goes for late night eats after going out drinking. There are some hotels nearby as well so people come here too. It was busy on a Friday night at 2am. The servers work as fast as they can and the food isn't bad. We got a breakfast item that I can't remember with eggs and chicken and we got a mac and cheese chicken pasta. It didn't take long to get seated and lots of people were eating too. There's street parking and you should be sure to check the signs for street cleaning because it is very easy to get a ticket there as there are a lot of patrollers. read more
