We were treated to the tasting of many different red and white wines while being told the source of what we were drinking. A drab exterior, simple interior, with beautiful boutique wines and very limited production, there are no great "Napa experience" expectations here. This is a small tasting room with absolutely no designer ambiance and absolutely no reservations needed. You get a taste of "quaint" by observing the rusting yellow tractor sitting in the small parking lot. Just waltz in, say howdy, then hunker down for an unassuming but good wine tasting experience. Our pourer was Clair, proud senior citizen, a really patient man and experienced wine pourer who was quite knowledgeable of his wines. Piña (yes, spelled with a tilde for the proper pronunciation) has no vineyard, they purchase their grapes from 5 different vineyards. The Cabs are not blends, but 100% Cabernet grapes. Our personal favs on their tasting list were (of course) the 2009 Mimbre Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, @ $150, which no self-respecting retiree is ready to pay for, and the 2013 Low Vineyard Chardonnay @ $34, which we did pay for. But by far the best, the 2012 Firehouse Cabernet Sauvignon @ $85, was not listed. We only heard of it because of a customer who happened in to pick some up while we were there schmoozing, and whose eye rolling description was reason enough for us to want to try it. Glad we tasted it, it was exceptional and the other one we purchased. The tasting fee is $20. Since we shared our tasting, and since we did make a purchase, the tasting fee was waived. Piña is one of my favorite go-to wines and I'd never had the chance to visit until recently. Lovely tiny winery hidden away off Silverado Trail. I couldn't even figure out where the tasting room was once we drove up. Yes, I was sober (though not for long). The five stars rating is not for the actual tasting, but for the wine. The SINGLE VINEYARD cabernet sauvignons are incredible. Their Yountville and Howel Mountain Cabernets remain my favorites. The tasting itself is very simple and to the point. You walk in, taste 5-6, hear a little bit about the origins and you are done. No bells and whistles so don't expect much in terms of that. I did get to do some (clumsy) punching of the grapes as you can see by the video I uploaded. Probably not a very good job, but it was very interesting and a whole lot of fun. For the most part, you won't find most of what you are tasting at your local wine shop and it has a little bit of a cult following. Although we did originally find the Yountville one at our local Total Wine, we found out during our last visit that South Florida is the exception for some unknown reason. You can mostly buy it as part of their club. It's not a sales gimmick. They are just THAT small. Quality over quantity. I have tried their wines through a friend who loves this estate so when we got an offer to walk the vineyards with the winemaker it was a no-brainer.... So we met and drove to Howell Mountain and walked the vineyards, sans mud courtesy of the rain the night before and got to sample the grape on the vine through all the different rows and slants of the vines to the sun...It was also an educational experience walking o the extremely knowledgeable and obviously smart wine maker... We then went back to the vineyard and sampled the wines, which were also awesome! The highlight was the tasting of the 2014 'wine' while in fermentation, s well as the punching of the vats containing the fermenting grapes... pretty cool, very memorable. I think the 2014 vintage will be a superb year.... buy when ready! read more

Fab Cab!!! Best kept secret in Napa. It is right on Silverado Trail but if you blink you might miss it. Don't tell anyone but this place has some of the best reds (cabs) I have ever tasted! Small family owned and pre-purchase required but it is worth it! We are wine club members and get to go to all of these fun events (check out my paella pic). Pina Cellars is a hidden gem on the Silverado Trail, so be on the look out for the old tractor by the road with a small PINA sign. We were in a hurry to head back to Oakland to catch our flight home, but i made it a point to stop here and do a tasting of what became our favorite stop on our wine adventure weekend. You need to call in advance to arrange a time since Pina is really tiny compared to other wineries. The tasting room is actually their barrel room. The entire place is roughly 1500 sq. ft like a large garage. We met up with Jarred who was extremely kind, knowledgeable, and very laid back. Where else can you find a winery or vineyard that is willing to play the Doors while you taste their wine? Our first tasting was the 2004 Howell Mtn Cab that was just phenomenal. All the other tastings are future blends that come straight from the barrel. Jarred told us most of their vintages are sold out way before they are even bottled. He gave us a list of futures and asked if we wanted to try any of them, how cool is that????? He went straight to each barrel and let us sample the following future vintages: 2006 Howell Mtn Cab $78, 2006 Rutherford Cab $78, 2006 Wolff Cab $72, and the 2006 D'adamo Cab $72. Each tasting just floored us with lush fruit and imagine each vintage hasn't even had the time to age yet in the barrels. We loved each tasting so much that we bought them as future releases. Now i understand why each future vintage sells out before it is bottled. A lot of other wineries spend too much time and money trying to lure you in with fancy tasting rooms or wineries, but not Pina. Its all LOVE in a bottle. $10 for a tasting is a drop in a bucket for what you are about to taste. We wait patiently for our future wines ;-) read more

Best reds on our trip. They offered 3 tastings for $10 (which is waived with purchase). We loved the Howell Mountain which was $78 a bottle. Price range per bottle is $70-$80 which isn't cheap, but decent for good wine. The staff should be beefed on the weekends but since it is a small winery, so it is understandable. There is no fancy tasting room, it's inside the cold vat of barrels with a cash registrar. Don't expect a Starbucks atmosphere, just expect good reds. read more

It amazes me that this place doesn't require an appointment because the tasting room is so small that even 6 guests make it feel crowded. The tasting room is really just in the chilly barrel room so you get a nice ambiance (but bring a sweater, it's cold in there)! If you like big red wines, you should try to stop in for a tasting. Our hostesses were very friendly and seemed to be having fun pouring the wines. One even entertained us with a couple of songs on her guitar. The tasting was a little too leisurely for me but after reading the other reviews, your mileage may vary! The hostesses were professional and answered all questions about the wine (no matter how elementary or advanced). I was also impressed when we finished our tasting they asked if we'd like to revisit any of the wines (nice touch). The wines themselves were very good but great gooly moogly were they OVERPRICED. I'm sorry but none of the wines tasted like they should be priced over $50 - $60 max and there were some super pricey bottles (in the $150 + range) that didn't warrant their price tags. I'm not saying the wines were bad, they were just overpriced. And there's not much I hate more than an overpriced wine! The tasting is $20 per person (sadly, that's a "normal" price for a wine tasting in Napa Valley these days) but at least it includes a very nice souvenir wine glass. We shared a tasting (no problem to do this) and I gave my glass to a nice newlywed couple who were tasting next to us. In the past years we have hit all of the big name wineries in Napa and Sonoma but now seekout the the hidden gems whose wines seldom reach the East Coast. So glad we went to Pina. On a Wednesday afternoon we were the only guests. The tasting is $15 but is applied toward a purchase. Yes the wines are pricey ($45 to $155) for cabs but so so wonderful. We got to taste about 5 cabs, a port and a late harvest chard.. Wow, what an experience!. Where else can you sample 90+ rated cabs for no extra "reserve" fee? Left with a bottle of the Howell Mountaian cab and the intrguing late harvest chard. Wonderful, relaxing experience in a very unpretentious setting. read more

I was looking for a small family owned, single vineyard winery when I heard about Pina. The information I had said "open 10--4" and to call for an appointment. I called and called. Answering machine was full --not taking any more calls. Darn. So one day while on the Silverado Trail, I saw the sign for Pina and went in. Except it was not the Winery - it was one of the owners houses. He greeted me nicely and directed me up the road a 1/2 mile to another driveway, with the winery so there I went to make an appointment for a tasting. When I got there, just after 4pm, the man said "Ah, don't pay attention to what you read, just come on in. We will take care of you." So the next morning I returned. I met Janie. Then I learned about Pina, one of the small (secret--shhh) wineries in Napa Valley. Pina has six Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards that they bottle separately. I tasted them all. Wow, the winemaker Anna Monticelli knows what she is doing. Each wine was complex, but different, showcasing cabs that truly embody the Napa Valley terroir. Janie, the face of Pina, was a wealth of knowledge, charm and pizazz, guiding us with helpful, informative comments and useful background information as we went through the tasting lineup. Pina is truly a small operation, so if the phone machine does not work that's alright and if the tasting room is located in a warehouse that doubles for aging the wine in barrels, that is perfectly acceptable. In reality, that is what one might expect for a low volume, high quality operation. So, if you want all the glitz and glamor that epitomizes Napa Valley, then go down to Route 29 where all of the big corporate made-for-the masses wines are showcased and hyped. If you want high quality small-batch wine, made with expert knowledge, and a driving passion for excellence, Pina might be it. I also learned that the 4 owners, are all Army Veterans, whose grandfather started the winery. So this is apparently the winery that other great wineries suggest that you visit. Just know, it's nothing fancy. In fact, it's essentially a barn with wine barrels inside and a small tasting area. However, what you quickly realize is that everyone here really knows what they are doing, is passionate about great Cabernet, and you're about to taste that passion. They will take their time to make sure you understand their wines, what makes them different, and will not short you on the tastings. Our pours were generous by Napa standards and my GF and I were able to share a tasting. These wines are remarkable. They have three that are 100% from each specific vineyard, so you can taste the differences in terroir, elevation and climate from each vineyard. I wound up buying a few bottles from all three, as they were that outstanding. And at $85 for a wine that would be hand-carried back home from the winery (and essentially taste the same as it did at the winery), it was a deal I couldn't pass up. Do yourself a favor when in Napa--if you love great Cabernet, stop by this winery and taste some of the best that the region has to offer. You won't regret it. read more

I hate to be the only hater in the group (if you can call a 3 star review being a "hater") but as much as we LOVED the wines here, this is a review of the tasting room/winery, not an evaluation of their wines. What's great about this place is that once you walk in, you see dozens of barrels stacked up and soon realize that THATS IT! No big factory winery here - very small production, honest boutique Napa cab done right, plain and simple. What's not great was how we made an appointment and got pretty much rushed through a tasting of two wines (how do you rush someone through 2 WINES?!?!?), the entire time being badgered and bothered by their admitedly cute dog (I mean come on, it's cute, but I'm trying to taste some wine here...). The tastings weren't free, and weren't waved with a pretty steep purchase, which is fine I guess, but the person doing the tasting seemed pretty bored and not super interested in telling us anything about the wines. So yeah, I liked the wine, but wouldn't come back to visit. I don't want big Napa touristy crap - far from it - I just want someone to be friendly, talk to me, and let me take my time and share in a fun time together. Didn't get that here. read more

DO NOT COME HERE!!!!! TASTING ROOM WINE EDUCATOR IS RACIST!!!!! This was the worst experience I have ever had in Napa Valley! My boyfriend surprised me with a napa getaway for my birthday. What started off as an amazing weekend quickly came to a end when we visited Piña Napa Valley. We arrived at Piña at the suggestion of our driver (he's Latino). He said they were a Latino family owned winery and had some amazing wines. Familiar with some mexican wineries in the area (Ceja in Sonoma) we decided to go. While trying to have a conversation with the pourer, Claire Palmer, I believe. While tasting he completely ignored my BF and I, unaware that my BF works in the wine industry as a marketing mgr for one of the biggest wine importers. When I saw a picture of the pina family, I asked if they were from Mexico. The look on his face changed immediately and he he shouted "absolutely not!!!! They are SPANISH!". Everyone standing around the barrel went silent. He then continued to emphasize how they are of Spanish origin, not Mexican ( I don't think he knows most Mexicans come from Spanish decent). We quickly said thank you, paid cash and left. Being Mexican myself, I was very offended. While in the parking lot 2 other women came out who were standing at the same barrel. They said that they too were very offended and not coming back. They worked at Dickhorn down the road. Terrible experience, will never go back!!! read more

If you're looking for 100% Cabernet Then you came to the right location. The front door wasn't very inviting but that's OK as the wine makes up for it. The gentleman who was pouring the wine was friendly and answered most of the questions we had. If you want to try a bold cab give them a try. As others have mentioned, I'm actually reticent to review this place. It's a pretty well kept secret , mainly because it's almost impossible to get a bottle retail. Dont' come if you expect a Napa Valley Disneyland show, or want a tasting room that looks like the lobby of a Four Seasons. They don't even HAVE a tasting room, you taste right in the truck driveway of their barrel room, which is a big warehouse. The wines are very often sold out, which lead to the sublime pleasure of having the attendant climb the barrels like a monkey to get samples out of them with a wine thief. You usually cannot buy the wine, as again, they are sold out, you buy futures. Trust me, it's worth it. When I went there to pick up my futures (I had left them sitting at the winery for months instead of having it shipped) the attendant made no secret of the fact that they were hoping I had forgotten about it and they would be able to drink it. So, go there, but make an appointment. And go in the knowledge that the Pina Family are GROWERS, and have been for generations, this is not a billionaire's vanity project or a liquor conglomerate's Napa branch, it's straight up wine from the head and the heart. read more

Pina is small and intimate. I haven't read the other reviews about it but, I'm sure they all mention that it feels like you're tasting in someone's garage. You basically are. I actually really like it. It focuses you on wine, and not beautiful tasting rooms and gimmicky distractions. Not that I object to beautiful tasting rooms but, I'd rather taste in a parking lot and have amazing wine then in a gorgeous tasting room with unimpressive vino. Pina focuses on cabs from various vineyards around the valley. Although they do make a cab blend and a chardonnay, they are Cab focused. Tip: I recommend any good vintage of their Howell Mountain wine. Phenomenal! Costs about $80 a bottle. read more

We unintentionally discovered Pina after learning that Frog's Leap was closed on Sundays. Fortunately, Clair (a gentle and knowledgeable semi-retired chemist who relocated with his wife from Florida) was working. He spent a long time getting us up to speed on some of the more mundane ordinances of Napa County. He asked us questions and told a well crafted story of the family, the property, and their low-maintenance approach to great winemaking. This place only does 100% cabs, which is really refreshing. Came home with a bottle of the Howell Mountain, which in theory should keep for several more years. However, I don't think I'll be able to resist opening it for too long! It was such an elegant wine. The exclusivity of not being available on a retail basis, makes Pina Napa Valley a special find. Their tasting room is extremely unpretentious (as other Yelpers have acknowledged) but you'll still enjoy this place immensely if you have a discerning palate for fine red wines! read more

Of our Winery visits last week.. this was right in the middle of the day right after lunch so our palates were certainly not up to perfection. With that said another small producing Vineyard with one of the smallest tasting rooms I've ever seen. Certainly should require an appointment as anything over 4 persons is stretching it. Very knowledgeable staff especially the young lady from Scotland who handled our tasting and a young guy who was new to the vineyard but knew his wines. Wines themselves were fairly pedestrian except for the Buckeye Cabernet which was outstanding. Not much to see and certainly no view... The people were nice, wines OK except for 1 in particular... but certainly would believe there are better options out there. read more

But, with their bottles starting at $45, and going up from there.... Let's just say the $10 tasting is a great value, but I don't think the wines are. Yes, 100% cab is unusual for the region, but $85/bottle is just way beyond our wine budget, and honestly, I feel like that should be beyond yours, too. Spread the wealth around a bit: spend $25 on wine and the other $60 on a ticket or two to a great concert. It just doesn't have to be expensive to be good. read more

On the other hand, The older gentleman that was pouring our glasses was snarky and unapproachable. He danced around the questions about the wines and made the entire tasting room area feel awkward. The other couple, the solo gentleman, as well as my friend and I sat in silence and tasted. This man would shut down everything you said to point that you didn't know what to even talk about anymore. Cabernet the grape that is king in the Napa Valley. The Pina family has been around for years growing fantastic grapes and still do. Go try these wines, small tasting fee, but worth it. Don't expect a fancy tasting room, Chateau or Castle. You taste in a barrel room, how cool is that. Those barrels are holding future years wines. This is the real Napa Valley. Definitely our favorite in Napa! As you drive up to Piña, you would not see a typical winery. The place is very unassuming and has a comfortable feel. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, especially Clair, who is also humorous. Tasting is a must. Warning: once you taste, you will be hooked for life. No other Cabs in Napa will ever compare. Each time we go , we never miss to stop by for a sip. They recently started producing Chardonnay, which is pretty delicious and more reasonably priced than the Cabs (~$30/bottle). We have been hesitant to write this review until now because we want to keep this place a secret. However, we must give credit when it is due and Piña definitely deserves lots of credit and then some. Tip: if you come across something you like during tasting, be sure to consider joining the wine club. Not a fancy tasting room. We were in the warehouse where the barrels are stacked to the ceiling. Bring a sweater if you get cold easily. We had a fantastic time tasting. More than 2 groups and it would feel crowded inside. Luckily a group was finishing as we came and by the time we left, a group happen to walk in, so for the most part, it felt like a private tasting. This was an unexpected gem on Silverado Trail! We were at Elyse and the host recommended Pina because we like the scenic views on Silverado Trail. Very low key interior, not flashy or anything. Rob is from Alabama and it is always nice to meet a fellow southerner outside of the south. He was warm and hospitable and also very knowledgeable on the wines we tasted. Sometimes, the hosts are a little off putting and don't really make you want to ask questions. Not Rob. He was so nice and kind and definitely made the trip. Pina was originally a random stop on the Silverado Trail for me. My goal was to experience a new winery. the place is relatively small but pleasantly so, with the tasting room in the middle of the cellars surrounded by wine barrels. I have been there now twice and received the tasting from Clair Palmer.. a most kind and intelligent person. He was one of the most personable and knowledgeable person I have met in a tasting room in Napa. He was extremely well informed about the Pina wine, the terroir, the soil composition. and could answer every possible question. He was definitely proud to be working at Pina and was quick to show photos of historical figures from the winery and from throughout Napa. You often get lost in the bigger wineries and the experience at Pina was very positive. The wines were monsters. They clearly specialize in their multiple mega cabernets, although I also loved the Chardonnay. I could not recommend the experience more and I will be back often to taste and buy more chardonnay. The tasting fee is $20 and is waived with purchase... that is rare nowadays in Napa and a welcome gesture. Thank you Clair for making the experience so positive! read more
