Free parking, clean restrooms, water fountains, and clear signage to all the trails; this is a perfect rally point to make a full day out of exploring Hanging Rock. It offers a ton of parking, a pool, gazebos and kayaks for rent, and activities for kids. City Lake hosts community events from time to time, and it can get quite crowded on those days, but go during an off-hour and its fairly serene. For walkers, there's a view of the lake and some interesting wildlife (Muscovy ducks, anyone?). The trails also connect to the Piedmont Environmental Center, which is worth remembering should PEC parking ever fill up. Whether you want to swim, fish, paddle, or stroll, City Lake Park has what you need to be able to enjoy the outdoors.

It's like a big castle clubhouse with so many things to climb, swing on, use their imagination, etc. I haven't seen a better design for a public park. The little kids playground, adjacent to the larger one, is just as wonderful. Plenty of seating and picnic tables for parents and shade in some areas, along with covered shelters. It's even handicap accessible. It's next to a little league field and has a walking path around the whole field if you enjoy walking. The only reason I give them 4 stars is because of the bathroom. They don't have a dedicated bathroom for the park, you have to walk a LONG way to the bathroom that's under the snack bar near the baseball fields. Trying to convince a toddler to leave the playground to walk that far is such a battle. If it wasn't for that I'd probably go more regularly. Winston salem needs playgrounds like this!! I was always in awe of the experience and wanting to try it. This was my first time camping. The camp grounds were clean. Our group camp site was in an extremely shaded area surrounded by trees. There are many trails here for hiking and I enjoyed this. I found a replica of an old frontier-style schoolhouse. It's what the school looked like 100 years ago. That was interesting. Since this is a camp site nothing about it was luxury of course but the most peaceful aesthetic was nature and the soothing effect the experience had on my nervous system. I brought all the things to be comfy. There were showers and decent bathrooms on the camp ground. This was less about amenities and so much more about embracing slow living. A place where no one is in a rush! The camp ground attendants were awesome. They came around daily collecting our trash. I do recommend this park for camping.

While at the Bridge, I mentioned that I was also considering going over to Riverbend Park which was only about 20 additional minutes from where we were. A couple of the folks decided to join me. I've been here probably a half a dozen times but never checked in and left a review although I did post some photos. Our group leader was familiar with the Park because she had hiked the trails often but was not aware of the Dam for Lake Hickory which is just upstream. The other lady was aware of the Dam but did not realize that there was a Park just downstream. When you pull into the main parking lot, at the back side is a small road with a sign that says "Trailheads" to the right and Picnic Rest Rooms to the Left. Not obvious but if you take the Left Fork, you go down the hill to the River. At the bottom of the hill is another parking lot next to the Catawba River. When you first to into the lot, there is an observation deck that extends out into the edge of the Catawba River. Great view of Fall foliage from here. If you go back past the covered picnic shelter you end up at the Canoe Launch area. Another beautiful area. We missed it but they open up the dam on occasion for the Canoe's and Kayaker's to create whitewater. At that time. all the rocks you see in the photographs are submerged. The parking really close to the mountain is handicap only, so the intention is for most people to walk a 4.5 mile loop that goes around the mountain and then up it on the way back. It is a substantial climb, both down into a gully with an impressive waterfall and up the mountain itself. The rock does offer wide-spanning views. The infrastructure was not in ideal shape at the time of my visit, with some water fountains down and other limitations in amenities. I also found the trail setup a bit confusing as following marks led me once to a dead end and in another case, I had to hike on a gravel road a bit to get back to the trail and that wasn't marked clearly as the right way to go. While these things could be improved, the park is an excellent resource and as is standard practice in NC (but not in SC or VA), is free to enter.
