    Park office

A quaint park with a little bit of architectural history to share and some water views. Lots of space for picnicking. Fishing seems to also be a fun pastime here. I visited on a cold, rainy day in fall and it was dead empty. I made a quick walk around the pond in marshy, wet grass. The woods are pristine as in most state parks I've visited. This park feels like more of a stopover or overflow for Haw River which is not far away. There are other trails but I didn't take them with the rain picking up. I can imagine there would be a lot of standing water or mud on the trails. The office was open, even now in the off season. However it was random as the ranger seemed to be staffing the park alone and was intermittently out to cruise the park and check on things.

    Deshazo access! Waterfall

Awesome kid friendly trail! Come early because there isn't much parking to be found but it's worth it! You come to the waterfall relatively quickly after entering the trail. The trail has stone/gravel on it so it would be fine for a jogger stroller but not for other kinds. There are also a couple steps. The trail continues on to the mayo river after you see the falls. We have children 7 3 and 1 and the older two walked it no problem. No cell phone reception with Verizon there.

Just 30 or so minutes north of Greensboro lies a hidden gem of nature called the Mayo River State Park Deshazo Mill Access.  Here you will find birds, flora, a waterfall, a hardwood forest, a beautiful creek, and a mighty river. All of this can be seen while on an easy hike (maybe a mile one way?) that will take you through a forest along Falls Creek and then along the Mayo and North Mayo Rivers. You can walk all the way to Virginia! From the trail head (directions below), it is a short distance to the falls. They are quite impressive, especially for a waterfall not in the mountains. You can continue downstream along Falls Creek, seeing a few smaller falls along the way. This is a scenic and easy walk through a lovely hardwood forest. You will likely see wildflowers along the way and hear plenty of birds trilling about in the trees.  Eventually, you will come to where Falls Creek flows into the Mayo River. Turn right here and head upstream along the Mayo. Next you will come to the confluence of the South Mayo and North Mayo Rivers. Along the way you will pass rock outcroppings that enable you to walk out into the river without getting wet. You will also see some decent rapids. Continue along the North Mayo until you get to a large Beech tree with three yellow stripes painted on it. This is the Virginia State line. I believe this property is owned by Virginia, so you can walk a little ways into Virginia with minimal risk of a Deliverance Encounter. If you don't know what that is, bask in your naivete. This is a magnificent place. If thou art worn and hard beset With sorrows that thou wouldst forget, If thou wouldst read a lesson that will keep Thy heart from fainting and thy soul from sleep Go to the woods and hills. No tears Dim the sweet look that nature wears. Take U.S. 220 north to the Smith Road exit just a few miles before you get to Virginia. Turn left on Smith Road and go about 5 miles until it comes to a T. Turn left onto Anglin Mill Road and go 0.3 miles. Turn right onto Deshazo Mill Road at the North Stoneview VFD. Take this for 1 mile to the parking area on the left (the second half mile is dirt road). This is the trail head. Enjoy.

Wildflower - Mayo River State Park

North Carolina's newest state park is a bit off the beaten track but in my opinion well worth the drive. I've hiked here in the spring since its opening looking for wildflowers (we saw quite a few). Our hike took us along creeks and the Mayo River. I've canoed here in past years, it's a very beautiful and tranquil setting. I believe the park will continue to grow and improve as it goes along. If your goal is to get away from the crowds, then this is the place for you!

Lovely spot for a two mile hike. Gentle path, a little rooted, but no steep hills. Lots of shade.

We took our kids (1, 5, 6) here to walk the 2 mile trail and they enjoyed watching fish swim around in the ponds!

I've never been to the pool, but it looks like it is really fun compared to other pools I've seen. I finally went behind the center to the pond and lake, and they were so amazing. I went fishing out there, and in the pond, there was actually a lot to catch. We threw it back, but it was still fun for my first official time! It's actually relaxing out there. I do wish they would take better care of the pond though because there's a lot of algae out there.

This is truly a full service park! That said, my review will focus mainly on the golf portions, with the park overall being a solid 5, and a must use for anyone in the Greensboro area. The driving range is just what you want and nothing more. A big open field to hit balls into, no frills, and also at a cheaper price than average. This is all I need, and all just about anyone would need at an amateur level. Distances are marked, and since it is pretty flat, you'll get a good idea for how far and straight you are hitting what. It's a popular place to practice, especially after typical work hours. The par 3 course... wellllll... it is less of a golf course, more of a hilly open area with some cutouts that would indicate a "green." There are 9 holes, the longest of which is about 130 yards, so no need to bring many clubs with you. The greens are about as rough as they get. There really isn't much of a putting surface. Too many weeds, and it's cut too long to get a realistic roll, I actually don't bother putting, because it isn't going to be good practice. There is also usually goose poop landmined around the course, the greens are no exception. The greens are also very small, none of which would be more than 25 feet in diameter, if that. The way I usually play, sticking the green from the tee is a birdie. Chipping up within about 5-8 feet is par. Anything outside of that, bogey. All this critique given, it was less than 10 bucks to play, really as much as you'd like. It does help you work on your short irons and wedges, and for that, I enjoy it and will return. Also, cheap beers in the clubhouse are just 2 bucks!
