This is probably one of the very best entertainment values that one could have for a weekend day get away. The river was beautiful with wildlife everywhere. It was an easy canoe ride with places to stop, eat and swim along the entire route. Even the people we met along the way were friendly and engaging. This was our first trip and we will definitely do it again very soon. We highly recommend this adventure for anyone looking for a way to spend the day outside in beautiful North Carolina. A couple of recommendations: 1. Water proof container for phones keys etc. 2. Shoes that you can use in the water.3. Dry clothes and towels for when you return. 4. Cooler for food and drinks (No glass containers). Plan on getting wet and enjoy a great day on the Dan river.

We also weren't sure when we would be stopping, so we didn't have water with us for quite a while... we were definitely the last rafting company to stop for lunch, the moral was getting low. Even our guide mentioned something about not knowing when we would stop. Our guide seemed fairly new, but the river wasn't overly intense, and we never felt truly unsafe. There were a couple of moments that made us a little nervous, but overall the rafting itself was SO much fun. One thing that definitely affected the experience was some of the other guests. Unfortunately, you can't control people's manners, and there were a few who were pretty rude and inconsiderate, especially at lunch. It was supposed to be ladies first, but we watched people cut the line and take huge amounts of food for themselves and their husbands. It was honestly pretty frustrating to watch and took a little of the fun out of that part of the day. That said, we had a blast and would absolutely recommend giving it a try! The staff was kind, the organization was good, and being out on the river was an awesome experience. A few small improvements with communication around food, water, and lunch would make an already great day even better.

We had a great experience. We were greeted warmly and the staff was super friendly. They answered all our questions and showed us a diagram where we should all put in the river to avoid some of the bigger rapids above the bridge. We felt safe and cared for and the life jackets for the kids were clean and gave us another level of safety. A few tips: -They say to get there 15 minutes before to go over a safety speech. We got there 15 minutes early but felt rushed to get our things out of the car and get ready, so next time I would plan come 25-30 minutes early. -The green tubes are the "premium" ones and they fit me (6'4" 200lbs down to my kids). Having the rope connector is super helpful to keep our group together. -The website says it normally takes 2-3 hours, but I felt we moved pretty fast (I even quickly walked and pulled my group the last quarter mile to avoid an incoming rainstorm) and we were on the river about 2.5 hours. We were way ahead of the rest of our group, so if we casually floated the river, I'd say it was closer to 3-3.5 hours. -There are changing rooms (stalls behind a curtain), a rinse off station, and a place to store your keys/valuables if you don't leave them in your car or plan to take them down the river. -Our kids only had to wear the life jackets down the first set of rapids after the bridge and didn't want to nor need to wear them the rest of the time. Our girls were sad you didn't offer pink tubes, but hey, can't please everyone :) Thanks for a great trip!

The staff is helpful and encouraging toward having a positive experience all around. The consignment shop section seems to be a nice way to clear out some old gear and buy new gear from the sales. We personally scheduled a kayak trip, that was rescheduled due to unusual flooding and then refunded after a hurricane. The refund was no problem and did not lose a deposit or anything. Clearly honest and want everyone to have a good time.

We decided to check out Paul's place because it was fairly close and he was so friendly on the phone when I called for more specific info. It's definitely a laid back and rustic environment but I was all in. Paul takes care of his customers and he was very adamant in teaching us the rules of the river before letting us launch. I had $60 in cash and he would only take $40 even thought the price was listed as $50. It's a great deal for you to kayak, paddle board and tube on the gorgeous river. We had it basically to ourselves that day and it was a revelation. The only thing I'd say is there needs to be upgrades to the life jackets. Most of them were child sized. I called and made reservations through Tangent Outfitters a month ahead of our stay in Pearisburg and when we neared the time of our arrival our plans changed and I called to change dates. In northern VA, we call, we text... maybe I left one too many messages; it's just the way I think the world works- but I could be wrong. Unfortunately, when the day arrived for our kayaking trip, we had immense rain and as city folks, we didn't feel comfortable and called to cancel our reservations, again, maybe that was the one too many calls. Shawn's response was, "ah, I'm over it. If you want to come great; if you don't..." at first I wanted to believe that he was referring to the rain- 'being over" one of the rainiest springs we've experienced in VA, but after some thought, I'm pretty sure he was referring to my calls. Being patient is important, especially in business. The Pearisburg/Pembroke/Blacksburg area is beautiful and we hope to be back soon, but I'm not sure if I'd make another call to Tangent Outfitters.

Jimmy was our captain, and he was super friendly and knowledgeable about the area. We had a great tour of the lake and a nice lunch at the Tiki Hut afterwards! Highly recommend this company...they also do boat, kayak and paddleboard rentals as well.

Lessons are cheaper when you bring more people with you. When we gave them a call no one answered, but someone called right back. The man was extremely nice and answered all of my questions. They were also pretty flexible with reservations days and times which I thought was great. Mtn2Island is next to the Claytor Lake State Park visitor center. You have to pay the $5 dollar Park entrance fee (for park maintenance people, totally worth it!) Transactions were completed through Square using iPads (love that). They fitted us for a paddle, gave us a lifejacket (he said VA law requires you have one with you), and then we got to it. They had the paddleboards down by the dock, and the Mtn2Island people put them in the water for us. The instructor, Issac, was very calm and extremely patient while my younger sister (who is in her 30s by the way) was in hysterics about getting in the water. Another young lady, Rachel, came down to help coax her into giving it a try. It took them about 30 minutes to get her to get in the water, but she did. It was definitely harder than I thought it would be and I don't recommend doing squats the day before because my legs were killing me after, but it was a lot of fun and I would do it again. The waves from the nearby boat made it difficult for me to keep my balance and about that time my sister fell in (she was wearing her life jacket and was totally fine), but she got back on her board and we made it back to the docks.
