The inn is close to the Blackstone River which is a beautiful place to take a walk, bike ride or rollerblade. It is about 25 minutes from Providence, RI which is a great city to visit. The rooms in the inn are themed, for example, you can choose from the Rose Room, the Lilac Room, Almost Heaven and the Treehouse Sweets. In the summer, relaxing by the pool is a lovely way to spend the day. I highly reccomend Morin's Hideaway if you are visiting the area!

With all its old quirks and tattoos of age, it is surely beautiful any time of year. My husband and I stayed in the "Gold Room," Thomas Proctor's own bedroom. From the clawfoot tub to the painted sinks, no detail was unattended to. I am amazed that this place is kept cleaner than most hotels, even with all its millions of nooks and crannies! Major props to the staff, especially Terry, who made our breakfast delicious and our experience unforgettable. We were so sad to leave! This would be a lovely place for a wedding, party, romantic weekend ... you name it. Touring the building is a must-do, and take it all the way up to the cuppola on top!

But I'm here to talk about smells. They clean the floors with lemon-scented Pine Sol. The downstairs is all hardwood floors so it has a distinct lemon smell in the air. The room was lovely but they washed the blankets, sheets, pillowcases, and towels with a strong scented detergent. As a super smeller, this was really my only complaint. If I hadn't brought my own pillow, I would have had to leave. Luckily I was able to sleep with help from allergy meds and my personal pillow. The smell of the air outside was clean and beautiful. Fresh Connecticut air! If detergent smells don't bother you, this is a great place to stay. I suggest they consider switching to hypoallergenic (free &. clear) detergent for those of us very sensitive noses!

For myself, I don't need a B&B with the pricey high-end amenities. When I'm on vacation or traveling, I'm either trying to get away from it all, or can drive to a shop specializing in those things if I really must. Gilbert's was perfect for me. An old family farm, converted to a B&B, was quiet and comfortable. I appreciate the classic, not-so-modern, character of an old home. The interior was tastefully and simply decorated with antique period pieces supplemented with modern decor. The yellow pine hardwood floors throughout the house were gorgeous and were what caught my eye immediately. The old barn and paddock were hiding places for the three outdoor cats. The wild turkeys occasionally perched in the tall trees. The proprietor, an adorable woman, showed me through the house with all the nooks and crannies and hidden rooms that made me realize the house was a lot bigger than it appears from the outside. I couldn't have gone wrong with any room I picked. What made it feel like home, were the interactions with the owners, who greeted me, and the other guests, both upon arrival and at the end of the day when we returned from our adventures. At end end of my visit, I didn't want to leave. I already felt like I was home. And the good-bye hug went a long way to making me wish I could stay and and the same time start planning the next visit. Just like a visit to mom 's or grandma's.

Here are some issues we experienced during our stay at the Christopher Dodge House: My first morning after shaving, the bathroom sink had a slow drain. I have a sink full of shaving cream. I told the manager at breakfast and I received a text around 11am saying they'd fix the issue. I left around 1:30pm, the housekeeping-maintenance staff was gone! I spoke with Kate, the front desk manager who was the one who fixed the sink, made the bed and gave us fresh towels. (Love Kate) Our room was very charming. A large King Size bed with a pretty quilt gave us the feeling that we're staying in someone's home. From the exposed brick in the bedroom to the homemade cookies, it was all very welcoming. When Kate gave us a tour, we were shown the coffee station. This was all free but the bottled water is on the honor system and not free? Strange but ok... Let's break it down: Bath products: Dove Shampoo/Conditioner/Body Wash. It did the job, was it special? Nah. Bath towels were thick and plush. Bed/Pillows: Firm mattress, firm pillows. I guess it all depends on your preference. Breakfast: This was some High School Home Economics, basic food served to us. Each day we had two choices written on the blackboard, substitutes weren't mentioned to us. The first day I chose French Toast with bacon. The bacon was overcooked and the French Toast was Wonder bread with hardly any cinnamon. Pure Maple Syrup on each table was a plus. The continental breakfast communal table had cereal, hard boiled eggs and toast. A very basic breakfast selection. Today my wife and I both had the special of the day: Blueberry Dutch Baby. My wife's breakfast was wet and jiggly? Each day we left the dining room underwhelmed. Parking: If you stayed in a hotel, it would cost on average $30 per night. We had free parking during our stay. I had leg surgery a few weeks ago, to check into the B&B it's a very steep staircase to get to the front desk. If you have mobility issues, this would be a challenge. Christopher Dodge House is a beautiful, New England Bed and Breakfast in Providence RI. Free parking and close proximity to everything was a plus.

The owners were friendly and welcoming. In the morning we got a delicious and plentiful breakfast cooked "on demand". Also, our wish for late checkout was no problem for the owner. We mainly came for the foliage and for that it is an amazing place - maple trees are all over the place! Just a short drive away is a nice little hike (The Rock House Reservation) as well as a pond with a restaurant right at it. Also, the local pumpkin festival just happened the day we arrived. All over - the perfect place for a cozy weekend getaway.

To be completely honest, I was a…read morelittle naive about what the B&B experience would be, and was worried about putting my director & producer up at a place that might not meet their standards - But let me tell you, I could not have been more pleasantly surprised! The rooms were beautiful, spacious and comfortable. Everything you would expect from a high-end hotel, and more! My personal favorite was the array of products in the bathroom. Not the standard, tiny, generic 'hotel-shampoos'... No, these were full-sized, well-made products! It felt like home - that is, if my bathroom at home was much cleaner, more elegant & spa-like. The Inn-keepers, Marilyn & Gregory were nothing short of fantastic. They were knowledgable about the area, and super friendly - but have perfected the art of being helpful without smothering their guests, as can be a inconvenience for some travelers. They made us feel incredibly taken care of, helped us with dinner reservations, informed us of the history on the area in an engaging way... the genuinely full package. Any time I had a question, I knew where to turn. Now on to what I miss the most... The breakfast. I arrived super early in the morning on my first day. Marilyn settled me into my room, and told me I was welcome to come out for breakfast at 8.30. When I left my room, I expected the standard selection of cereal, english muffins, and orange juice. Not at the Hawthorne Inn! Instead I walked out to a beautifully set family style dining table, where Marilyn & Greg served the other guests and I a delicious, holiday-worthy 3 course meal. For the calorie conscious traveler, I'll assure you, it was healthy and light and fresh. Granola, customized omelets, fruit, toast etc... They even respected & remembered people's dietary wishes and, without hesitation accommodated the vegetarians, etc. I mentioned in passing that I was allergic to egg yolks on the very first morning, and every breakfast following that one, they made my plates individually catered sans egg yolks without me even asking - even the french toast. My own mother doesn't even remember to do that. We were on a weird schedule, and rudely rolled out of our beds later than the scheduled 8.30am on most mornings. At most places you'd be out of luck, and left to fend for yourself, but they still somehow managed to get all of us fed each morning without any sign of annoyance. It goes without saying that my colleagues and I really enjoyed our stay there. I for one, was genuinely sad to leave and have to come back to my breakfast-less, less home-y apartment in Los Angeles.
