had my oil changed there back in Jul, upon changing it myself this week I discovered that there wasn't a crush washer or any washer on the oil drain plug which caused a small leak. When inspecting the bolt and the pan I found that both were stripped beyond repair. due to negligence or incompetence I now have to replace my whole pan. thanks! read more

Okay this is going to be a long review because this was two separate occasions. Last week I was hearing a loud noise when I would press on my brakes. That is the only time I would hear it so i figured it was my brakes. I called Pillis Brothers and asked if they could look at my car because I was hearing a loud NOISE and I thought it might be my brakes. It was around 5 o clock and they told me they could look at it that night. I took it there that night and what I'm guessing was the technician took it on a test drive and came back and said my brakes were needing to be changed so who I'm guessing was the owner told me to bring it back the next day. I came back at 11:40am the next day. I sat in the waiting room for a while and no one had said anything at all to me after they pulled my car into the garage. However, I overheard the "Technician" ordering brake pads and rotors so I figured they determined it was my brake pads and rotors. After a while of waiting and no word from anyone I finally asked an employee how many brake pads and rotors it was and if that was the issue. He came back and told me that is was my two front brakes, pads and rotors. Keep I mentioned the SOUND when I called the night before. Anyways a couple hours later my car was ready! The total was $414 which wasn't that surprising I was just relieved that they had determined the problem. THE VERY FIRST TIME I BRAKED RIGHT AFTER LEAVING THE SHOP I HEARD THE NOISE AS CLEAR AS EVER THE SAME NOISE I HAD CALLED ABOUT. So of course I was shocked I mean that was the THING I had brought my car in for. I went back about 30 minutes later and asked them why I was hearing the sound because AGAIN that was the REASON I BROUGHT MY CAR IN. When the "Technician" went on a "test drive" with me he acted completely surprised when I mentioned a sound and then proceeded to say that the sound was in fact NOT COMING FROM MY BRAKES. MY QUESTION BEING WHY WAS THAT NOT MENTIONED PRIOR TO SPENDING A LARGE SUM OF MOMEY. It gets worse. The VERY next day I ran over some rocks on bent mountain and wasn't sure what the damage was and being stupid I chose to get my car towed to Pillis even after the whole brake thing because I thought they could get my car fixed in a timely manner. I was wrong. When my mom called they said they could look at it Monday. It was Friday the day of the accident so a couple days which is understandable. Anyways Monday rolls around. I called them and they told me it was my oil pan and they had ordered an oil pan that night. I called Tuesday to see the status they then told me they got sent the "wrong" oil pan. Which is fine I understand mistakes happen and they told me they had ordered another one. So Wednesday I called again and guess what another "wrong" oil pan. Called AGAIN Thursday and you'll never guess what they said AGAIN FOR THE THIRD TIME THE WRONG OIL PAN. They told me they had ordered yet another oil pan but from VW parts and it was supposed to come the next day. It's Friday and I call again, keep in mind they had only called me once this week it was me doing the calling not them. Anyways when I called a woman answered and she was very rude from the beginning. She informed me that they had replaced a headlight and they were going to take it on a test drive then it would be ready. But the headlight was a surprise to me! They didn't mention a single thing about a headlight I guess they just didn't care enough to tell me which is so very odd because why would you replace my headlight without asking me or even telling me in the first place. Also on Monday the "owner" told me it would be around $200 for the part and around $200 for the labor. After the headlight situation I had my step dad call them. To my surprise they told him the total was going to be $650 which as I said was a surprise because not once did they say anything about the total and I thought it would be around $400 because that is what the "owner" told me from the beginning and didn't say anything about the cost during anybody phone call. I am grateful that they waived the entire cost. I just felt like I was left in the dark for the duration of the repairs on both occasions. They simply just lacked communication. They also left the headlight they "fixed" without my permission slightly popped out. It was NOT like that before. Also they took my engine cover off without telling me and left it in my trunk for me to find. read more

My daughter's car broke down on the road into Salem while visiting a friend. We live 180 miles a away! Pillis Brothers were so kind to her, communicated well, figured out what happened and got her car running quickly and inexpensively. They allowed her to keep her car at the shop for a few days until she could get a ride back down there the following week. As a first experience with car issues for my daughter, it couldn't have been better. Thank you Pillis Brothers for helping my daughter! read more

The best mechanic in Salem. Steve and his employees have looked after all of our cars over the past 8 years and everyone I know has taken their cars to Pillis for generations. They have trouble-shot problems, done easy fixes and complicated ones, and if there is something they are not equipped to repair, they have referred me to other quality shops. In the past I had heard many good reviews from Pillis, all from older people so when my car broke down I didn't think twice about taking it there. I later discovered the reason he was praised by older people is because they had delt with the previous owner, not the current one, Steve. When I took my car in I got a phone call later that day, saying they replaced a bad part in the car, it was working fine, and would be $80. I picked my car up, drove a mere 3 miles down the road, stopped, and within 2 minutes of being in park my car idled and cut off. The same exact problem I'd been having when I brought it in. I luckily made it back to Pillis, and explained to him the same exact thing was happening. He was smug and arrogant, replying that they tested it and drove it and never had that experience. I asked Mr. Pillis if he'd sit in the car for five minutes with it in park so he woud experience the same thing. Mr. Pillis put me off as an unintelligent woman who was a waste of time, and told me to take it somewhere else. I left wondering if Mr. Pillis had ever even put a part in at all, considering he wouldn't sit in the car and see if the problem would occur again. I felt taken advantage of and ripped off as a woman, and promptly took my car to a quality mechanic. Steer clear! read more

My family has taken our cars to Pillis Brothers for over 20 years. I have personally dealt with most of the family members who work there, but primarily with Steve. They are courteous, professional, and always provide excellent service in a timely manner. It has also occurred once or twice that a problem has returned following a repair. In these cases they fixed it with no charge, even though purchasing more parts was involved. There have been a few times when the repairs have been beyond what their small shop can do, and they referred me to another repair shop, also family owned, very honest and reliable. We have had two experiences when the repair is very minor, and they performed the service at no charge. I am at a loss as to how the previous reviewer could have such a negative experience since my family's experience has been consistently very positive. I recently had a very negative experience at an auto repair shop in Florida, so I know how a negative experience can leave one with a bitter aftertaste. I'd like to reassure the previous reviewer the experience they had is an anomaly, and to try again. read more
