Best coffee I've ever had. And I thought the best coffee I'd ever had was in Portland, OR so you know this is good. The Nitro cold brew concoctions regularly impress me. Today I had the pumpkin brew and I've never tasted anything so close to an actual pumpkin pie without being overly sweet or overly spiced. My husband has the regular nitro cold brew and he loved it (first timer). I wish they were open more during the week because I'd be here daily to get my fix. Try the pumpkin cold brew if you're as basic as I am (not ashamed to admit it) and want an autumn caffeine kick. read more

I went to Pilcrow on a cold, rainy day. The barista was very welcoming and took us through the menu. As a first timer at Pilcrow, we opted in the tasting menu. Pilcrows sweet and creamy nitro cold brew is the best coffee-type beverage to ever cross my lips. I could live off of it and forgo all other liquids (sans water of course) and have even considered moving to be located next to a daily supply. Truly remarkable and gives you a wonderful jolt of energy, just beware that multiple servings later in the day may keep you up until the next day. We met up with some friends at Pilcrow Coffee on a beautiful fall morning to try out "The Flight", a $10 sampler of 4 small glasses of their specialty nitro drinks and teas. In our flight, we got to try the classic nitro cold brew coffee, the "sweet 'n creamy", a creamy pumpkin cold brew, and the sweet Chai-der (apple cider and chai tea mix). It was a perfect amount for two to share, and I loved the variety! There isn't too much seating available, but overall a fun place to hang out on a relaxing morning. Pilcrow. You slay me every time. I am a fan of the Nitro Cold Brew - I usually do half sweet and half regular. I am not a coffee expert but I have had tried much of the coffee/cold brew in Milwaukee and surrounding areas. I find Pilcrow to stand above the rest. The owner Ryan is wonderful and is always willing to speak with you about what he has new going on and what creative things he has brewing. His employees are not coffee snobs. I find sometimes at Stone Creek I am intimidated as I do not speak coffee - Pilcrow employees spend the time to ask you what you like - or why you like a certain drink somewhere else and then create something for you. It blew me away - not only do they have a love for coffee they love to brew magic and make sure you enjoy it as well. You can take it to go or you can stay and chat or work a while in the shop! Great coffee, poor customer service. We decided to come here this past Sunday after hearing about the famous nitro cold brew coffee. Walking through the door, it wasn't the busiest place in the world but had a few customers waiting for their pour over coffee from the bar. We looked around for the menu, confused, waiting for the barista to point us in the right direction. After an awkward minute or two standing in front of the bar, I told the barista this is our first time here and we weren't sure where to look for a menu. Without much urgency or care in the world, the barista asked us what we usually drink and we eventually ordered a black nitro coffee and a sweet and creamy. After the awkward encounter with what seemed to be a typical "pretentious hipster" barista, we were greeted by a man selling local hand-made pies, 'Hatched.' He was the opposite of the barista, offering samples and personal recommendations. Both the coffee and hand-made pies were fantastic but the customer service lacked with this particular barista. I love a good cup of black joe so I probably be back and hopefully add Pilcrow to my favorite Milwaukee coffee shops! read more

You will definitely get your caffeine fix. :) The barista who served us up our coffee drinks, was knowledgeable when it came to the variety of "brews." I got a sweet cream kind on tap. It was quite tasty, and I guzzled two drinks down - easily. It kept me pretty wired throughout the remainder of the day, however, I definitely experienced a caffeine crash afterward. Was searching for some local coffee options in Milwaukee and I found this gem. They source their beans, roast them in house, and brew them up into some amazing coffee beverages. Very personable and knowledgeable gentleman was working this morning (pretty sure he was one of the shop owners based on our discussion). I usually like to try an espresso and pourover when I visit a new shop that roasts in-house, but they have halted their pourover service for the time being. So backup order was an oat milk cortado and long black espresso. Both were very tasty and he let me choose different beans for both. An overall great tasting experience. If you're looking for a shop to hang out and drink your coffee this probably isn't your best option right now due to limited hours and limited seating options. Don't get me wrong - I love Colectivo and Stone Creek and Anodyne and yada yada yada. Sometimes though, i just don't feel like dealing with the line and the noise and i need something different. Something a bit more personal. Pilcrow is your retreat. The staff here is super friendly and helpful. I'm not much of a coffee guy myself but they always find me something that I enjoy. The ginger tumeric tea is fantastic. They make this drink called "Campfire" with toasted marshmallows on top and even I like that noise. The nitro here is awesome. My wife loves their lattes because they use oat milk. Apparently almond milk makes your coffee taste like "wet cardboard". I like it. Idk. Oat milk is definitely better though. Get down to Pilcrow and try something different for a change. read more

Ok so this seems like an unpopular opinion, and I completely think it's all based on personal taste, but I really did not like this coffee. It was much too bitter/acidic for my liking. I typically drink a dark roast with low acidity, so when my husband and I went today, we got a nitro coffee and a macchiato. They were both very acidic and hard to drink. The place is super cool, has a great vibe, and the coffee looks awesome, but I disliked the taste. I say go to try, because you might like it, but not my "cup of tea". read more

This roastery + tasting room has been operating for less than a year which, I assume, is why a lot of articles didn't mention Pilcrow. They're missing out. The macchiato I had was excellent - smooth and flavorful and if I hadn't already had way too much coffee at that point I would have had another. Before the macchiato I had a pour over of their Ethiopian blend and it was average. I was able to taste some of the notes but I also got a very papery taste...maybe something wrong with the filter? Pilcrow is a very small cafe but they manage to do okay in the space utilization category. I wonder if they could add a communal table for some more seating? Some food for thought. read more

I know nothing about nitro, but a friend told us we must go to this place and try their nitro, so we did. Excellent! The creamy coffee was delicious, and the Chaider was good, too. Personally, I was expecting the Chaider to be more Chai than cider because I really love Chai, but it was still super tasty and I would order it again when I'm more in the mood for cider. Tl;dr: best coffee in Milwaukee. While no means, would I consider myself a coffee critic, I have been frequenting the local staples - Colectivo, Stone Creek, Valentine, Kickapoo, etc. - for years. While these shops all deserve merit, Pilcrow is in a tier of its own. While chatting with my knowledgeable and personable barista on my first visit to Pilcrow, he nonchalantly informed me that the owner was flying to Kenya the next day to purchase coffee beans on an invite-only trip. That's the kind the place we're dealing with here. For $3, you get a meticulously crafted pour over coffee that will change your life. Every detail in accounted for - preheating the mug, precisely grinding the beans seconds before serving, and so on. The result is a cup of coffee (actually they serve it in two different cups for you) that is unlike anything else you can have in the city. I'm not exaggerating. The service is great, too. This is not a pretentious shop for elitist coffee snobs. Everyone at Pilcrow is incredibly chill and welcoming. I cannot recommend this place highly enough. read more

The atmosphere was quiet and the service friendly, however I did not thoroughly enjoy the coffee. My fiancé ordered a chai latte on tap, which was ready instantly and delicious, albeit very sweet. I ordered the campfire latte, the seasonal latte for winter. It was a plain latte topped with toasted/burnt marshmallows and graham crackers. I will admit the graham crackers and marshmallows were delicious and gave me a longing for summer. However, the coffee in the latte was acidic and bitter. I don't mind a black coffee or an unsweetened latte, I just prefer a smoother flavor. It could just be personal taste, because many people seem to love Pillcrow. read more
