We left Hilo to Waimea, popped it to grab a snack. Ordered the shrimp tempura bento, every bite was a tasty parade, you can just tell that there was care in everything and not just thrown together for a quick buck. We went to Akaka Falls and took the "scenic route" back to Hilo. Saw this spot and took a chance. So glad we did. We got the breakfast Sando special with Mac salad and pickles and it was fabulous. Great hidden gem! This little kitchen is just off Hawaii Belt Road, or Mamalahoa Hwy. Like so many of the small businesses in and around Hilo, the atmosphere is pure aloha. Great food, awesome shaved ice (be sure to get ice cream and snow cap!), also a great variety of local products and art. Definitely a must-stop as you're taking the scenic route by the Botanical Gardens (which you should definitely do). Also, the service is always excellent! read more

We stopped at this cute spot on the scenic route and had the BEST warm sandos! The Kimchee Reuben was stacked with home made corn beef and Kimchee kraut on rustic bread and toasted to perfection! FAST FORWARD TO NOW. Pi'ilani Kitchen and Onomea Country Store are FANTASTIC and did not disappoint. The Cubano is CHERREH and comes with house made pickles (Yup!) and Ulu Mac salad (IYKYK). The store offers locally made products (food stuffs, art, clothing, stickers) and produce, and well as other basic necessities you'd find in your neighborhood convenience store.
