When I travel, I'm usually on one of two quests: finding a town's best old fashioned or tracking…read moredown its best BBQ. In Great Falls, Montana, that second mission is easily accomplished at Smoked. I went all in with the brisket burnt ends, baked beans, coleslaw, and banana pudding for dessert--and every bite confirmed I was exactly where I was supposed to be. The burnt ends were rich, smoky, and indulgent in the best way. The portions were perfectly sized (which I deeply appreciate), leaving room to enjoy everything without feeling overdone. The coleslaw was solid and refreshing, though I couldn't help wishing I'd gone for the spicy version--lesson learned for next time. The baked beans, though? Basic in the most comforting, nostalgic way. They instantly transported me to gathering around a campfire with friends, plates balanced on knees, smoke in the air, and no rush to be anywhere else. And then there was the banana pudding--simple, satisfying, and exactly the sweet ending a great BBQ meal deserves. If you find yourself in Great Falls and craving BBQ that delivers both flavor and feeling, Smoked is the place. This is the kind of spot that reminds you why seeking out local favorites is always worth it.

Alright. I will start off with saying I am not an easy guy to please. I am kind of nit picky when…read moreit comes to food. Surprising considering I spend half my free time eating freeze dried meals. I also used to be a chef (a LONNNG time ago). That being said we decided to grace everyone in The Block with our "Fresh out-the field" straight back from elk hunting aromas and get some food that was actually edible. I had the Alpine Melt (Fontina, prosciutto, sautéed spinach and mushrooms). Sweet Mary mother of God was it good. It was also not "have been eating stuff that is considered a war crime on your stomach type food, so this just SEEMS better" good, it would have been good if I had just got done eating a normal meal. The home made chips are awesome as well. They also had a decent selection of NA beers for weirdo teetotlers like myself. Because as much as I abstained from alcohol, I also abstain from drinking stuff that tastes like rotten piss covered potato chips which is what NA beers used to taste like (thank God for the craft NA beer craze now). So, for the folks at The Block, kudos, and you should just find a place on the menu for that thing.
