Dinner for 15 last week. We were only available after they closed for the day, but with advanced notice they were kind enough to open up just for us. For that kind of customer service alone they get 5 stars. I thought I'd try something different and had the catfish. It was incredibly crunchy, nice and moist. The slaw and sauce were great! The big hit of the night was the couple that ordered a double sampler plate (pictured). I think all 15 of us ended up eating off that plate. Their brisket really is wonderful, and I make my own... Overall we had a great time and really appreciated the staff for coming in after hours to accommodate us. read more

Everything we had was amazing. Great cocktails and they do a local beer flight as well. One of the best old fashioned's I have ever had with the local big horn bourbon. The caesar salad was also great as was the Union burger. Service was quick and friendly and the decor was on point for the historical location. Highly recommended. read more

Oh my. This was worth the two hour drive from Helena. Every single thing we ate was amazing, from the appetizers to the entrees.

Though the location seems to be out of the way and off the main road, the Union Grille is nestled right next to the Missouri river. There is a little walkway and then an old bridge over the Missouri that you can take a walk on. The restaurant is located on the first floor of the historic Union Hotel. It's appeal is music and somehow old fashioned but in an alluring kind of way. The ceiling is the old tin type with old fashioned designs. The seating area is dimly lit for an intimate setting. A reservation is HIGHLY encouraged! The staff are kind and attentive. We started with the Montana cheese plate and trout hush puppies for the appetizers. The Montana cheese plate was amazing. All cheeses are locally made. Each bread and jam complimented the plate well, not taking away from the delicate cheese flavors. The trout hush puppies were crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. The trout taste was delicate but up front. For the entrees we ordered the hanger steak (absolutely tender and amazing, well cooked and seasoned) and lamb chops which were cooked perfectly, they were not gamey or tough. The meal and the atmosphere is perfect for a small intimate gathering or a great date night. The dessert was rich and delicious and the flavors played on each other. Who thought lemon curd and rhubarb/strawberry tart would go together? So good. We ended the night with a stroll along the lit bridge I mentioned prior. Absolutely a delight. 1000% go again. Wonderful dinner and great service. I had the pork chop which was cooked to perfection. GF had the fish and chips, similarly prepared. We finished with a huckleberry ice cream dessert and decaf French press coffee. Stacia took good care of us. As we were close to the kitchen, we got to see what others we're ordering, and it all looked excellent. We stayed in the hotel, so enjoyed the included breakfast in the morning. read more

The chef and sous chef have changed, and the menu too has changed. The steak and lamb chops we ordered for the main course were not seasoned or otherwise flavored by any means. The lamb chops was half raw and even the starters were mundane. It's not worth driving from Great Falls to dine here. read more

This restaurant came highly recommend. I am sorry to say the food was a terrible disappointment! I had steak frites (sp?), $24 on the menu. Top sirloin steak 6oz on top of a bed of shoe string fries. Expensive top sirloin that was very tough! Add a salad was 6 leaves of lettuce with a homemade light dressing..as a starter we had a flat bread, like a pizza with pizza sauce little green onion/mozzarella and was suppose to have sausage. $13. They were out of sausage. Very skimpy!! My husband had the tuna ahi, it was "ok".. Very overpriced for what you get! Wait person was delightful!! The ambience is great!! And staff was very nice. They obviously need a new chef!! This is the start of high season for tourism, 3 months is all. If this place has to depend on locals in the winter, they won't make it. read more

Superb. Well worth the 45 minute drive from Great Falls. The restaurant is in a classic hotel and is full of 19th century charm. The food was delicious and the desserts were the "icing on the cake" of a great meal. read more

Super small portions, particularly the appetizers. I'm from the coast where seafood is fresh. The oysters are shrunken, tiny and very little flavor. The grouper was prepared wonderfully, but had very little flavor, again because it isn't fresh. At $35/ plate, I expect fresh. Also, Service was a bit slow but very inattentive, even though there were prob 4 young girls and only 4-5 parties. A couple times we had to walk around looking for the waitress, who hadn't shown herself for 30 minutes. A beer took 20 min to bring (all tables are within 50 feet of the bar). I plan to try Wake Cup Resturant, around the corner; which. Now serves breakfast, lunch and dinner (new bigger location). read more

My true review is a 4.5. This restaurant was named the most iconic restaurant by thrillst magazine. Located in beautiful Benton Harbor overlooking the Missouri River. Driving here from Great Falls was worth the scenic views as well. The hostess seated us promptly and from start to finish the staff could not have been more personable and friendly. For starters we decided to try the chefs coconut soup. The soup was very good, it essentially tasted like a corn chowder with shaved coconut added. My recommendation to the chef would be to purée the coconut and filter out any remaining shavings, this is just a personal preference, as I really did enjoy the soup. The salad was part lettuce part kale with a spicy tomato dressing. Very nice, never had dressing like this, enjoyed it very much. For entree, my wife ordered the filet with huckleberry gastric sauce with purple mashed potato and red and yellow sautéed carrots in some sort of wine reduction. The meat was cooked to perfection, the potatoes were great, the huckleberry sauce was a great way to eat the filet an absolutely wonderfully crafted dish. I ordered the duck which was served over a cauliflower purée and sautéed kale with pine nuts. The dish was executed well, the duck was cooked medium rare, and eating it with the Au jus duck sauce and cauliflower purée worked very nice together. In addition, I loved how the restaurant offered special kids items that were not on the menu, my sons sliders were fantastic. If you are ever in Montana and have a chance to come here an absolute must. If you are not traveling with a pet, I highly recommend staying at this hotel. read more

Excellent food and service! Definitely worth it to drive here from Great Falls. The portions are smaller which is great because we weren't overstuffed and could still enjoy dessert. It's a bit on the pricier side, but the service and food quality makes it worth the money. The waitress was attentive in just the right way - she gave us time to make food choices then time to eat and did not hover or make us feel rushed. The hotel is gorgeous and very reasonably priced. The restraunt is amazing. The filet was perfectly cooked and the duck was awesome.

This was by far the best food and service my husband and I have yet to experience since visiting Montana. This past Monday July 7th we had the pleasure of having Rachel as our waitress, not only did she make us feel comfortable she was also very assertive, friendly and easy going, she recommended the lamb tenderloin and before actually receiving my entree, she had explained it perfectly!!! The food is to die for and service exceptional, we will be back through the following Monday the 14! We hope to have the same experience, as well as to enjoy Rachel's exceptional service once again. read more

Ate here last night and stayed in the hotel. The food was delicious and expertly prepared. The restaurant has a small but well thought out menu, something for everyone. The wait staff was very friendly and was always attentive without hovering. When I come by Fort Benton again this will be a destination stop for dinner. Our favorite restaurant in the state. Historic hotel restored to its early greatness by the Gagnons, with a great wine list and price range for all. You can eat in your canoeing clothes as you climb out of the beautiful wild Missouri (seen from the dining room), or bring your wedding party in formal dress. Some reviewers said "dressy". You can if you'd like, but nobody cares what you're wearing. This is Montana. Everyone is treated the same. The chef often comes into the dining hall and talks with everyone. Montana specialties like local grains and vegetables, buffalo, walleye, huckleberries, wonderful steaks, or more exotic fare that changes often. If you don't feel like spending much, then the bar menu or just some amazing appetizers will be perfect. We're from the SF Bay area, and we've eaten here 38 times! You will not have a better time or better food anywhere. 11 of us gathered at a table 2 nights ago and shut the place down. 11 very happy people walked out into the light of the full moon shining on the Missouri. Make The Grand Union a regular stop like we do! read more
