I decided to call in here as a way to kill time before I went to meet a friend - I don't know why I always do it but I was ridiculously early again! Pier 36 was only just opening as I pushed open the really heavy doors at 10.30am, oh the shame of entering a pub before noon - my granny would turn in her grave! As soon as I entered I noticed the awards on display and the large selection of tourist information leaflets. The sheer amount of awards is great - there were three of four on the outside wall and three or four inside the foyer. I was mildly embarrassed to be pushing my way in when the place was clearly only open a wean of minutes. The barman was so nice when I asked if it would be possible to grab a cup of tea. He told me they also had scones if I wanted them and, as I kind of felt stupid in a bar on my own at 10:30 I lied and said that I had not had any breakfast and would love a scone or two. (I hate scones usually.) The tea and scones were amazing, just what the body ordered and the views out over the beach and harbor were really nice at that time of the morning. There was enough in my teas pot for three big cups of roasting tea and the two scones came with jam, cream and butter. I've never had nicer scones, they were warm from the oven and baked to perfection - my bill was £3.90 - very reasonable. While I was drinking my tea a family emerged from upstairs to pay for their room, I was unaware they had a hotel in the building but according to my excellent ability to eves drop the family had a wonderful time! Snug, warm, dark, lots of toys for kids, a great menu, decent prices, friendly staff and a great location - a lovely bar to visit for a drink or a freshly baked scone. Love it.

Four of us are having dinner at Pier 36. We ate here 20 years ago and it hasn't changed a bit. My wife and I are, however, are staying in the small hotel upstairs. The king bed is huge and the room very nice. We ordered two lobster dinners, the pier 36 prawn open sandwich and a custom cheese burger also a liver pate' appetizer. They have the smallest bottles of Diet Coke I've ever seen - and very expensive! The appetizer was good . Everyone's food was outstanding especially the prawn sandwich which wasn't really a sandwich but prawns on open face dark bread. Yummy yummy a definite dinner house to visit ! read more

Food was poor. Went here based on all the good reviews. It's possible we had the wrong dishes. MU mum is vegetarian she asked for the Sweet Potato and quinoa salad. What she got was a lot of Kale and a sprinkle of quinoa and couldn't see the sweet potato. They should have called it Kale salad with sprinkles, very poor and not worth the price. She could eat it so she ordered soup. There was no offer to replace the dish we paid for both. I got lasagne that had skinny fries. The fries arrived cold and the lasagne was a good portion but really had no taste. I doubt I will eat here again. Giving 2 stars is generous. Not worth the price. read more

I came here for dinner tonight with a party of four, and was delighted with my meal. I had the pan roasted monkfish, which came on a bed of linguini and was absolutely delicious. The portion size was just right, as it left me satisfied but not too full. I would highly recommend this dish! read more

On our last trip back to Ireland from Canada last week we ended up travelling here 3 times as the food was so good. The bang bang chicken is great and the bar itself is a beauty inside. read more

I love Pier 36 and have had many great meals there. Today I ordered a steak over the phone for delivery and asked for ketchup on the side to go with skinny chips. Food was delivered ten minutes earlier (thank you, that was brilliant!). Unfortunately the steak was overcooked and instead of tomoto ketchup I got a peppercorn sauce. This restaurant is brilliant but unfortunately today I paid 20 odd pounds and a tip on a piece of meat that was sadly overcooked. Overall I recommend this restaurant, just was unlucky today I guess. read more

Pier 36 is situated in Donaghadee, right on the quayside of one of the prettiest harbours on the coast of Northern Ireland. Every visit to Donaghadee reminds me of childhood days out, Ice-creams from the famous "Cabin" shop and stories of my parents and grandparents swimming in the harbour as children during annual holidays! Put simply, it is a very happy place for me and I cherish every visit. By happy coincidence, my very good friends, Fran and Gav live moments along the coast in Groomsport and when they suggested lunch in Donaghadee, I jumped at the chance. Pier 36 is multi award winning, largely due to its locally sourced ingredients, quality of dishes and excellent service. I can honestly say that I have never had poor food or service during my many visits and this one was no different. When we arrived, we were told that the restaurant was fully booked but we managed to secure a table in the bar area. We settled with a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc to peruse the menu at leisure. While the starters are delicious, we decided to go straight for main courses and potentially a pudding. After much consideration, I opted for the Bang Bang Chicken. Regular readers could probably have guessed that one as I am a renowned sucker for anything with peanut butter. I wasn't disappointed with my choice. It came served with Asian salad, tobacco onions (another favourite), satay sauce and skinny fries- delicious! Mr, Eating Ideas chose the rib eye steak with pepper sauce and chunky chips. Fran opted for Seabass and Gav had the roast beef with all the trimmings. Their son, James chose the kids burger with fries and you can't really go far wrong with that! We were all delighted with our choices with me especially in a peanut butter induced glee! We all declared ourselves full to bursting but one of my favourite things about Pier 36 is their selection of mini indulgence puddings. These are tiny versions of puddings served in shot glasses. Just enough to give you the flavour of the pudding and provide that sweet kick at the end of the meal. We chose 3 of these between us for a little sugar kick and they were divine! If you haven't paid a visit to Pier 36 yet, I would encourage you to go. Great food, excellent service and a lovely walk around Donaghadee's famous lighthouse on the pier- what's not to like about that? Full review here- http://bit.ly/pier36 read more
Standard pub grub really. Nothing to rave about. Inside is nice the way they have various styles of seating to choose to sit. The place in general is quite large. Staff are nice. Have been previously for dinner. Was there last night for desserts. My tea was served in a tiny expresso cup. Bit strange. read more

Loving Pier 36 which is best described as a family friendly gastro pub. There is a grill menu and a dinner menu - we tend to take the children and eat from the bar menu as the dinner menu main courses are around £20. Speaking of the children, Pier 36 is a totally child friendly venue. Not only do they have colouring sheets and pens but also a basket of toys and the staff seem particularly nice to the kids. Sadly my little gems only grunt in reply. The grill menu has plenty of fish options, like Portavogie prawn scampi (lush) and battered cod with mushy peas (really lush). Each of those are around £10 for a generous portion of really good up market pub food. There's also chicken dishes, stir frys and a very good Pier 36 burger. As this is also a bar, there is a good range of wine and beer. Kids meals are good value at £4.50 and you get proper home made chicken gougons and mash instead of the usual frozen nuggets and chips. The interior is very traditional pub style - lots of wood and exposed brick. In winter the front of the bar is toasty warm from a blazing open fire making this a lovely spot for lunch or an afternoon drink. If you don't want a full meal, you can have light bites like chunky chips with 3 dips - these are among the best chips I've ever had, and potato bread and brie. If you're eating from the more expensive dinner menu, you'll be seated in the restaurant area towards the back which is just as pleasant but more open and airy than cosy. Children are made just as welcome in this area and will enjoy sitting in one of the booths. Whichever you go for, you'll have a great meal. read more

I absolutely love Donaghadee. I spent a lengthy chunk of my childhood growing up here, and while I might have ended up living in Belfast, I'm still in the Dee about once a month to keep the pangs of homesickness away. I'll usually end up in Pier 36 after trailing the clan around the Commons and the harbour for a walk. It's a brilliant little pub, a mere 200 yards away from the lighthouse. A lot of money was put into this place a decade or so ago, and it's now a very homely, upmarket joint with great food. You'll pop in for a pint or a meal and want to stay until closing time. Naturally enough, their seafood dishes are always, always good; So is their Bang Bang chicken which flies out. Satay that tastes like the real thing. Highly recommended, not unlike the rest of my wee home town. read more
I really like pier 36, service is fantastic with a great atmosphere and the decor inside really suits it. I think its a hidden gem and you could walk on down the pier without even thinking of going inside. The foods always been nice. Its really missing a trick though, it needs photos of the inside put up on an A board to attract people in. I like the seats on the right-hand side by the door best. And its great for a walk afterwards. read more

I really like pier 36. Have been handful of times now and they have everything from pub grub to gourmet kitchen. Are always accommodating especially when we pushed our monster truck of a twin pram through the doors, they still made room for us and made us comfortable. read more
