I am sitting here in Pieper Cafe and realize I have not written a review for my neighborhood cafe! Until Pieper Cafe opened it's doors 7 months ago, Foster Powell was in desperate need of a decent coffee shop, the kind you find in almost every other hood in Portland, the kind where you don't even have to think about it, you just go because you know it's going to be exactly what you want in a local spot to sip warm drinks, read the paper, chat with neighbors, maybe get a little work done and nibble tasty sandwiches, salads and soups made in house. But there is another reason that I love Pieper - they have gluten free options! You can request any of the panini to be made with Udi's bread and they also sell Blue Moon baked goods which are awesome, gluten-free or no. So, my boyfriend and I can go here and know that we will be able to have a snack or meal that satisfies and suits our diets. Kelsey and her staff are so warm and welcoming and that is the other half of the equation that equals a successful local cafe. Kelsey is precisely the type of person you want to see when you walk in - easygoing, cheerful without being falsely chipper, good sense of humor and a ready ear to listen to whatever is on your mind. And finally, I greatly appreciate what they have done with the space. What was previously a dark, depressing and disorganized jumble is now bright and cheerful, with a classic red black and white theme, big tables in booths if you need to spread out or a window bar if you just want to watch the world of Foster go by (this can be quite entertaining). read more

This is a perfect neighborhood coffee spot! They have awesome gluten free choices which I appreciate. The gals at the front are always super awesome and the coffee is perfect. I miss this spot, I just moved, but this was my go to place to work on my laptop, people watch and drink coffee for an hour. They also have good breakfast! read more

So when you search gluten free breakfast this shows up. Technically they do offer gluten free bread for a little extra. No gf bagels though... I guess you could get a panini? Not a terrible option cut not for economical. I think they charge $2 extra. I would prefer gluten free bagel option. I don't really want to spend almost $10 on a breakfast "sandwich". Coffee was great. Service with a smile. Wish they had some fruit cups? Gf oatmeal? Gf bagels. Gf breakfast frittata muffins. All of those would hold up pretty well... Stumptown coffee!!! Expensive. Half the staff are super rude. Other half are super nice. So, 50/50 chance. The owner is nice but never there. Food is good half the time, probably depends on who makes it. This was my neighborhood coffee shop for a while so I tried to support it but I just kept having worse and worse experiences. Finally, I was surprised that a salad I'd ordered came w bread (it was hand written in tiny words next to the menu item up on the board, which I personally find difficult to visually process, which really annoys the rude staff) and when I said something to the runner who dropped off my plate, they looked at me like I was an idiot, swiped the food off my plate with their bare hands, and tossed it in the garbage in plain sight, all without saying a word (after I asked if it had gluten). I was a bit shook after that. I'm not sure why some people can't understand that those of us requiring a gluten free lifestyle aren't trying to make anyone else's life harder. It's simply difficult to live our lives cuz wheat is everywhere. I just wanted a salad, you know? Haven't been back since. Who needs that kind of negativity in their life? Their coffee tastes good. Their dirty chai latte is not nearly as good as the one at Bipartisan Cafe up on SE Stark & 79th. Not sorry. read more

Very tidy and welcoming with good coffee and light eats. There are a few spacious booths with power outlets for laptop campers. The two pinball machines are sequestered in a tiny room in back, which keeps their sounds isolated from the rest of the cafe, but make them a joy to play because you can actually hear all the music and sounds. The coffee and food are prepared with love and the staff is more than gracious. A gem in the neighborhood. Let's hope this, the board game store and the newly remodeled movie-theater across the street can bring sustained charm and spirit to what I have seen over the years as a run-down stretch of Foster. I have come here a few times and only because the line at Henry Higgins is always so long. So I decided to help the business with no customers. I ordered two bagel sandwiches and an iced coffee. My cost was a little over $23. $23!!! By the time I got my two sandwiches the line of five people at Henry Higgins have all been helped and are gone. The everything bagel tastes like someone poured a ton of pepper on it and the egg, cheese and veggie sausage have no flavor. This isn't an isolated incident. I have tired to like this place four times because I live in the neighborhood and it's a local business. Each time, long wait and disappointment. Do yourself a favor and wait in line at Higgins across the street. Better quality, more affordable and they are also local. I don't like leaving bad reviews, but this place is bad and EXPENSIVE! read more

Pieper Cafe is is swell. I don't know how to pronounce it. It's full of light, and the folks who run it are sweet. They have a handful tasty treats, and this tea called sassafras tea? I think? that tastes just like root beer, and all manner of simple details a coffee shop ought to have. It feels wholesome and golly gee whimsical. Which, in this area of town, is a pretty huge deal. You feel at once relaxed and focused here, and I am decidedly a fan. Someday when I grow up and become a regular coffee drinker, or a work-from-home entrepreneurial type, I am certain this will become my regular haunt. read more

I recently discovered pieper cafe and It seems like it's never very busy and always plesent service. I stop by before class and have never had to wait for more than 10 minutes for my coffee. The house-made caramel latte is great, and not too sweet. There is also a good selection of pastries and standard breakfast fare. I reccommend to anyone wanting a quick cup of good coffee. read more

I used a yelp deal and was pretty happy with their food and their coffees. Could lose the company that shared the dining area with me though :( Both times I have been in there, there are "regulars" that act like they own the place and have, seemingly, no respect for the other patrons. The sweet girls at the counter appear too meek to say anything, so I was forced to listen to a heated phone conversation with a tech company the first time. The other time, I had to stand as there was no where to sit due to them deciding that a cup of coffee was worth an entire table for the whole time I was there.....for 1 person. Pieper Cafe has excellent coffee and bagels. In my opinion there's no better way to start the day right than their oatmeal. They have all sorts of toppings to choose from. Pieper hasn't returned to inside dining yet (as of this writing, at least), but they have outside tables. So.. if the weather is poor you can have your food and drinks to go. read more

Pieper is a nice little coffee shop in an area that needs it! spacious, plenty of tables, very nice proprietor. Board games! My latte was very nice, but my enormous almond croissant was not that great--more bready, less flaky, than I seek in a croissant. I'd be happy to go back & try more things, though, and the vibe was very casual & nice. And I got a deal via Yelp, first time I'd tried that: paid $7 for $10 of credit, love that! read more

VEGAN FRIENDLY... The staff is friendly and the service is great. We find healthy choices readily available and quite affordable. I love the garlic hummus! The coffee (regular old coffee) is excellent but refills cost. I haven't tried there other coffee drinks but they seem reasonably priced. The dining room is pretty standard for a breakfast cafe. My reason for less than five stars... for a cafe... is that there were a few gnats in the dining area (fresh fruit?). Also, a parent was letting her kid run around the eating area making a bunch of noise. Very annoying but not really Piepers fault... I will definitely continue eating/drinking here but won't be my first choice if I'm looking for something quiet. I'd like to state again... Every bite of food I had was DELICIOUS! The Mount Hood melted in my mouth and the Cauliflower Soup was the best I've ever had. Kelsey is the owner and has the sweetest disposition. She has created a gem: the peaceful atmosphere and happy/calm vibe can be attributed to her management & business style. Yet, it flows with the neighborhood. This is definitely a destination if you are in the neighborhood. You won't be disappointed by the food or the ambiance: tasty & chiller. Also something to note: lots of men. We stopped in while we were waiting for a table at Off The Griddle. I was hesitant at first after having a poor experience here a few years ago, but it was the only warm place to wait nearby. We grabbed a tea, which was prepared well and quickly. They brought it to us where we sat along the nice, new bar along the window. Things were cleaner and more welcoming than my first trip. I wouldn't drive across town to go here, but I would grab another tea while waiting to go somewhere else. read more

I came here based on Yelp reviews expecting a decent coffee shop with a mellow vibe, and it did not disappoint. The small shop situated on the corner of the street serves a variety of sizes of the standard kinds of coffee, plus what they call a house coffee which is cheaper than the other brands. My sister tried the Guatemalan house coffee and didn't love it (same), but their latte is exquisite. The baristas are super friendly and the artsy cafeteria style spot can also be great for reading, people watching and studying. read more

Bought a black coffee and egg, sausage, cheddar panini. The sausage seemed microwaved and the egg looked to be poured from a carton, as it wasn't really scrambled at all, it was just a thin (eighth of an inch) floppy thing of egg like substance. I can't believe this costs $7.00. What did I even tip for? Certainly not to pour a cup of black coffee... Never coming back. This is my go to place for great coffee in the FoPo 'hood. The staff are super nice and make an effort to get to know you and what you like. The panini sandwiches are delicious and they brew Stumptown, which is a must. It's a small independent shop so they have to charge a little more to stay in business but it's worth it to have this unique cafe in the SE. read more

I found this little place when I was working nearby. I needed a quick and easy lunch for me and my 3 kids. Something they would actually eat. Grilled cheese!!! Yes! And they had a yelp deal? Bonus! I used their wifi to purchase the yelp deal right in the cafe on my phone. Then went ahead and used it right then and there. Very easy. The grilled cheeses turned out delicious. There were many different kinds of cheeses to choose from and they grill-pressed it right there. I even had some stumptown coffee to go with it. Thanks, Pieper Cafe!
