Until I came here, I did not understand why people were willing to pay so much money for custom framing. The proprietor here has a fantastic eye for colors, is very friendly, and happy to break the pricing scheme down for you and give you advice about where to skimp (which pictures will still look good in one of his cheapest black frames, and which ones won't) if you are trying to custom-frame while saving money. Update about the the framing job I reviewed last summer: the frames began to crack and split just while hanging on my bedroom wall. I hated having to call the framer and dreaded how he might respond. Well, the results could not have been better. He was horrified that the frames were defective and promised to remedy the situation. He contacted the manufacturer and found out this was a problem they'd discovered with that particular frame. He suggested an alternative frame that we both actually liked better and was higher quality and more expensive, and he reframed all four pictures at no cost to me. I'm delighted with his work, his customer service, and most of all, his character. He has my highest possible recommendation. read more

The picture frame factory, in its very unassuming location on 18th street, seems to get a good deal of business since there are frames wrapped up waiting for pick-up almost everywhere. Both times I called to make sure they were open, the answeree was was nice. When I arrived I was helped promptly. We discussed the type of frame, matting, etc. Half of the money down when you drop off, the rest when you pick up. I can't compare price wise to other places, as I do not get a lot of framing done, but I would recommend this place based on convenience, service, and being affordable enough for me! This place is amazing. Every time I have a friend who asks for a tip on getting something framed, I hands-down recommend this place. Overall, I've had six pieces of artwork framed here. Framing isn't cheap, but this place is very reasonable and very fair. There was one instance where I was debating between two frames, and Kamran (the guy in charge) literally said, "If you like them both equally, go with this one, because it's a little cheaper." Most places would've tried to upsell. They didn't, and I found that level of integrity very reassuring, especially considering I've had some shaky framing experiences at other places in the past. But what really sets this place apart is the level of care Kamran puts into his work. I've been to other framers where they'll let you point to a frame, shove some mat underneath, and call it a day. But Kamran actually thinks about things artistically. I had a big painting on parchment paper, and he told me that if I framed it to the edge, it would look like a poster. Instead, he suggested he instead put a double mat around the raw edges. The result is absolutely stunning. Same thing: I had two small paintings, and he put them in the same gold frame and black mat around both, but one mat has a thin yellow edge and the other has a red edge, which gives it such a barely-noticeable-but-super-custom-looking feel. Honestly, I've had some hit-and-miss experiences with framing in DC, but this place has always done a great job at a great price. Highly recommend. read more

We spent $700 getting four items framed - one large, two medium, and one small. When I got back home with the pieces, I really wasn't happy with two of them, and felt there had been a misunderstanding between what I wanted and what had been done. I took the two pieces back and he said he would redo them -- at no charge. While I was frustrated about the whole situation, he really kept his calm and was very nice about it. When I went to pick up the two new frames today, both him and his wife (I assume?), were once again extremely nice. I am very satisfied with the end result. OK so I debated between 4 or 5 stars because the pricing is a bit high, a big however, I don't know anything about framing so that can be relative and I will say the customer service is impeccable. My GF dropped off something to get framed here months ago and she bit off just a little more than she could chew price wise and was afraid to return for pickup. I returned in her stead and the guy was muy patiente (that's espanol for you) and gave us a deal not only on the pic we were getting framed but also on a second I brought in. If I could give them 10 stars I would! The customer service here is without a doubt the best I have experienced anywhere. This is actually my second review of the store, as my husband and I were thrilled with the items we had framed here 2 years ago. Since then, we've moved to downtown silver spring but were so happy with their original work and the prices are so great, we went back and had another piece framed. The owner and his wife were incredibly sweet and matched our frame to the one we did two years prior. When we picked up the frame today and brought it home, we saw that they accidentally left the backing off. When I called to let them know, they were so apologetic and knew we had moved further away and that I am overdue with our first child. The wife immediately drove to our house to pick up the frame, took it back to the store to finish the back, and returned it within a few hours. Talk about customer service! There is no doubt in my mind that this is the only place we will bring our pictures and posters to be framed in the future! This rating is for the consultation and drop-off only. I'll update with another post when I actually pick up the piece. I need a mat cut for an "off size" print I have. This morning I went to a frame place in Cleveland Park and the people there were very short with me and in the guy's own words, "I won't be cutting anything until after Dec. 16." Okay then. I'm out of there. But before I left I asked for a recommendation of another place since they couldn't meet my timeline. He gave the me the name of a place in Adams Morgan. I turned to Yelp for help and found that both places - the Cleveland Park and the recommended one - had bad reviews for customer service. Then I found the listing for this place. I called and Cameron was very nice and could meet my timeline. Went to drop of the print and he was helpful, kind, reasonable and didn't treat me like crap because I was only getting the mat and not a full custom frame job. And the price was $20 cheaper than the Cleveland Park place. So far I can assure that I will be going back with all the little things I've been meaning to frame. And just a side note, if you've never had a custom frame job you should know ahead of time that it is expensive - always. I'd make my decision more on the experience with the framer and the quality of the work than the price but in this case it looks like I might get all three!! Go see Cameron. :) read more

This is a great, neighborhood frame shop which has been in business for as long as I can remember. The owner is very helpful in making suggestions and offers quite a few choices of framing materials. I took a batik here for framing and asked for his advice. He expressed a lot of experience in framing them and offered some spot-on solutions. When I showed a friend the results, he was really into them and went in for the same frame on his batik. Even though that frame wasn't on sale anymore by that point, the owner remembered me from my earlier visit and gave him the same deal. Work was also done on time as promised and excellent. I recently had a 25 year old large (27" by 40") Batik framed here. The entire experience was fantastic! The Batik had some damage, including a rip in a portion of it; because of this I was not sure how to have it framed. The gentleman walked me through my options and suggested a great frame that I wouldn't have noticed without his help. When I arrive to pick it up I was shocked - it looked like I had just purchased a brand new Batik. He had repaired the rip, placed the frame so it was not noticeable, and the framing he has suggested looks absolutely fantastic with the color and image. Not only this but he helped me bring it to my car since it is so large. I could not be happier! To the person who complained about cost: I took a look at Micheal's (much lower quality results, knowledge,and customer service in my opinion) and it was only slightly less. I think the cost is an excellent deal for what you get - someone who has the experience and expertise to tell you what will work best and look great in your home. This is the best framing shop in Northwest DC. At least in the Dupont, Adams Morgan, Logan area. I got lured into a few other framing shops by some daily deal discount emails, but as always, you pay for what you get. In the case of the Picture Frame Factory, I paid a fair price and got Excellent quality craftsmanship and customer service. The element of service that left me the happiest was that they help ME choose what frame works best for my picture. I don't exactly have the best eye for design, but I also don't just want to be sold a frame. Amazing experience! I recently had an oversized (70"x50"), vintage poster from the 1930's framed here, so definitely a harder item to frame. The owner provided great advice on best look for the poster. The poster looked excellent in the store when I picked it up (walked it the 3 blocks back home with a friend, too big for my car). I got home and eagerly hung the huge frame and noticed that it appeared to be bowing at the bottom so contacted the store. Kamran, the owner, quickly responded and offered to come over to address the issue. He stopped by my condo yesterday, changed the mounting hardware on the back, and I re hung the frame. I had a piece of artwork I had been holding onto for over a year that I wanted to get framed. Had played with a few options, including simply doing the faming myself. I had the design laid out in my head, but wanted to play around with some mattes in person so I swung on down to the Picture Frame Factory having walked by it hundreds of times. Cameron is awesome. He worked with me for close to an hour to get the exact perfect matte/frame combination together. We probably went through 40 different frames and dozens of matte options, giving very in depth points and critiques of various options. Was nice that he had awesome tunes playing in the store. I picked the piece up on Sunday and it was absolutely perfect. It was obvious that Cameron was very proud of his work and really wanted for me to be blown away. He didn't just hand the frame over and move along, he took the time to show it off, give me different views, etc. Guy is just the tops. Its not cheap, but well worth it. read more

We have been using the Picture Frame Factory for years now for framing jobs and we just keep going back because the quality is great, the timing is good, and we like the options. Yes, it is a touch expensive - but isn't all framing? And frankly, we have found at the end of the day that the prices quoted are fair and for the quality job being done it is well worth the investment. We also have really come to like the guy and also appreciate his advice on different framing options. Over the course of the last three years we have had at least 10 pieces framed there - a variety of jobs - and I have never had a complaint. After a suggestion from a friend I decided to visit this hidden gem in the busy adams morgan neighborhood. let me just tell you , this guy is so cool. I walk in there and he's got Bob Dylan playing in the background. I am guessing he is the owner - he definitely looked like he was in his element working on the side of the shop. Over several years, I've had more than a dozen items framed here. I considered it reasonably priced; I thought the proprietor had unusually good judgment; and I thought the quality of work was particularly high. Picture Frame Factory sounds cheap, and looks it. And it was -- compared to the one shop in Georgetown and other one on Capitol Hill that I had compared prices with. But I recently had a re-frame job which PFF had quoted at $250 performed elsewhere -- with the EXACT same frame that PFF was going to use -- for just $160. And the $160 included replacement of the existing matte with archival matte, whereas the PFF quote did not cover this. I had several other items -- altogether quoted by PFF at $2,300 -- done by the alternate shop for a little over $1,300, at better quality. And the alternate did it all within one week. The workmanship of the alternate place completely satisfied the perfectionist in me. In fact, I would say the work is more precise than PFF. I have twice returned items to PFF -- once immediately when the frame cracked; another time after the print came detached from the matte years later. I cannot recall PFF ever finishing anything within 2 weeks. I got quotes at a second alternate place and they were also about $1,300 for the batch. These places put the prices at PFF in proper context. Yes, PFF may be a little cheaper than the tony G'town shop, but it is hardly cheap. Both alternates had a selection at least as good as PFF. Both were very cordial and forthcoming with good ideas. So in hindsight, I don't think the guy at PFF was so special at all. Both of the comparison places are just outside Washington, which is an obvious downside. The one I used is on Georgia Ave. in Wheaton; the other is on Linden Lane in Silver Spring. While not as convenient to those of us who live in Adam-Morgan, I saved $90 on just one picture!! I used a Zipcar, but I could have taken a cab out there and back twice and still saved money on that single item. I saved about $1,000 on the batch! To sum up, PFF does good work, and has a decent selection of materials. If you refuse to leave the 68 square miles of DC, then PFF is probably as good as any of the few other overpriced places and a little cheaper. But if you want equal quality, faster, and at a significant discount, look a little farther afield. I waited too long to do this, and feel like a sap. read more

They seem very nice. But when I went in to have a pretty basic wood frame matched (I have a new print in a series) and they didn't have it, that was that. No calls to vendors, no promises to check their suppliers, I was just out of luck. Today, with so much available online, relying on your office stock seems pretty old-fashioned. I'm sure they're nice, and great at framing posters, but DC needs a gallery-ready framer. read more
