One weekend afternoon in April 2026 I decided to pastry taste five spots in Newport Rhode Island. Unfortunately Picnic came in 5 of 5. I got a blueberry muffin and a sort of pound cake with coconut frosting. Both were fairly bland and the muffin was even overbaked on the top. Perhaps they cater to folks who don't like much sweetness in their patries. The place was pleasant enough ambience and design wise but the staff seemed very uninspired and even morose. In my opinion there are much better pastry shops in town.

Chocolate pistachio latte and Black cherry latte

Solid spot. My boyfriend and I came for a light lunch after passing by the corner cafe and seeing the long line. We shared a grilled cheese which came with cold slaw, salad, and potato salad. We also got a delicious Reese's cookie. I enjoyed the chocolate pistachio latte, the black cherry one was really good too! This cafe is also attached to a hotel. We sat outdoors. There are plenty of nice shops around too.

Popped into Picnic for a quick lunch and was pleasantly surprised by the amount of delicious baked goods and the quaint atmosphere! We were welcomed in and our questions answered as we ordered. My friends had the summer strawberry salad and I had a bowl of clam chowder (even in summer, chowder makes me happy). Their salads were lovely and portioned well. My chowder came with a ciabatta roll which was the highlight- the chowder too thin and lacked clams- the broth tasty and potatoes held, but it's not a highlight of their menu. We also grabbed a couple of their enormous cookies to go- Reese's PB Cup cookie was soft and sinful and the chocolate chip was the perfect ratio of sweet and salty. I think sandwiches and pastry are the way to go for the next visit!

    Spinach feta pastry

Coffee was okay, but I reaaally enjoyed the food here! Had a spinach feta pastry and soup of the day (at the time was Italian Wedding Soup) which came with bread, butter, and oyster crackers. The pastries look delightful in their cases... so worth it to get a selection warmed up for your walk home!

One of the best pastries I've had! Everything tasted so good and fresh even at the end of the day. We came in 15 minutes before closing but ordered a variety of pastries. Each one of them were good. The peanut butter cookie, double chocolate chip cookie, blueberry muffin, strawberry cheesecake loaf, lemon cake, pain au chocolate and almond croissant! The drinks were good too but the pastries stood out the most.

I stayed at Hotel Viking across the street but I gravitated to Picnic for my morning coffee and lunch. What I was most impressed with was the freshness of everything offered. The baked goods are fresh and baked on premises Soups are made on premises Nice lunch offerings They know how to use the espresso machine Picnic opens at 8? I was at the door 7:59 getting my latte. I must point out, they are many unique breakfast offerings. There are tarts with eggs baked in the middle as well as lots of savory baked item choices. I had lunch here twice, I ordered a New England Clam Chowder and Lobster Salad. A typical New England lunch, I'm sure they're serving these items in grade school with coffee milk. Rhode Island baby! My soup was amazing and came with a side of warm, freshly baked bread. My lobster salad was all lobstery, not made with fillers and was a large portion so no complaints from me. Picnic, it was a pleasure to dine at your establishment for the week.

Enjoyed the egg croissant at Picnic. The croissant was buttery and fresh. The employees were friendly and there is a cute sitting area to eat your food. No wifi or laptops allowed to encourage being present and conversation.

Food: very delicious. Their pastries are delicious. We walked 15 minutes to get croissants and ended up getting bunch of other pastries. Service: this is a small place. You order at the counter and take your stuff. If you order coffee etc, they quickly bring it to your table. Value: prices are OK. They are a tad on the high side but croissants are really, really good. The place is really cute and I would highly recommend it.

It Hurt So Good:…read more The day hath finally come! I could finally try The Nitro Bar. My husband and I previously saw the line prior to entry, and both realized that while we waited for our lunch reservations we could finagle and get our coffees. The trepidation was tremendous. I couldn't wait to finally try these seasonal beverages; all the hype on social media, I knew that it was gonna be worth it. When we finally got to the register, something overcame me. I couldn't just try one drink and my husband wasn't getting anything that I really wanted to try so I made some excuses about allowing my family members to try whatever I get and I ended up choosing the Cookie Whip latte, the Caramelized Banana Matcha latte, and the Red Velvet latte(original choice would have been the toasted coconut latte, but they ran out of the syrup because it was just too good.) In the refrigerator off to the side we noticed that they had chai puddings, banana pudding and overnight oats; so we thought to ourselves what the heck, let's grab a chocolate cherry chai pudding and a banana pudding. Both were good but the banana was something special. Then we heard my name called and we were able to sample the goods. That first sip of the Banana matcha latte, holy shit, my taste buds were elated. I nearly downed half it before realizing I had my other lattes to try. The Cookie Whip.....the hype is real my friend, it's crack. The sweetness yet not overpowering the coffee. The whip....by the time we rejoined my family while still waiting for lunch, the cookie whip had disappeared. I gave my mother the Red Velvet Whip. She tried it...then she tried the matcha and preferred that. I gave her the rest and tried the Red Velvet myself. It was good, the whip had a nice balance of cream cheese however the clear winners were the matcha and cookie whip (I should have known as I rarely go for the actual cupcake, that's on me). Yet I stilled sucked on that shit til that sound occurred again, air slipping through the straw indicating the last remnants. Mind you I'm a tea girlie....I rarely have coffee and I just downed two lattes and half a matcha. I knew my immediate future would be impacted....the reservation at Wally's Weiner's finally was called and I immediately sat down in a daze. I took a deep breath and knew I needed water. As someone who struggles with vasovagel syncope reactions (google it, it's a ride let me tell ya) I knew I couldn't let it get that far. Let's just say I hydrated and used every bathroom I encountered while in Newport. Wrecked my opportunity to enjoy my mother's birthday dinner at White Horse Tavern and prayed to the gods that I didn't go to panic town. So would I go back? Hell ya. Would I recommend all those drinks? Hell ya. However what I will remind my myself is to pace yourself baby. No need to go ham. I can come back. Thank you Nitro Bar for the intense detox, mommy felt a little bloated today.

Then they served our food, but forgot my youngest boys breakfast (which was only pancakes on the kids menu). Then in the middle of him eating his mail while we were waiting she just dropped the check and said no rush instead of just waiting for him to finish up. Lastly, we paid our bill and then the waitress said oh wait I forgot to add your drinks to the check. This was funny because she forgot our drink water, and I had to go up and order our drinks, but yet she did remember at the last second to add them on which was too funny. The food was nothing special, but overall satisfactory. What you really are paying for is the ambience and the view out to the ocean.
