I've been trying to discover cute little coffee shops in Newport and I'm so glad I stumbled upon this cute cute Bellevue Gem! On this beautiful Newport day, I got to meet their lovely staff & laid eyes on their yummy looking pastries. Though I wanted to try ALL of them, I unfortunatelt couldn't but I was definitely being called to the Apple Turnover the most and BOY it did not disappoint at all! It was so perfectly baked with the perfect amount of apples and not too sweet. My friend had the Egg Basket (phone did not eat first) which was a 5/5 review for her and the Oatmeal Raisin cookie which also got a 5/5 review with a comment of "being hearty!" Searched yelp for cafe near me and chose Picnic because it looked intriguing. This is a really adorable cafe connected to an inn-great choices, delicious pastries. I chose the blueberry cake...sweet, moist and loaded with berries,so good! The roast chicken sandwich had perfect proportions of meat, greens, and mayo-I chose multigrain bread which was excellent. My only constructive guidance was that the coleslaw was too vinegary tart for me but I loved the potato salad! I got blackberry mocha coffee with oatmilk-creamy deliciousness! Coffee was okay, but I reaaally enjoyed the food here! Had a spinach feta pastry and soup of the day (at the time was Italian Wedding Soup) which came with bread, butter, and oyster crackers. Solid spot. My boyfriend and I came for a light lunch after passing by the corner cafe and seeing the long line. We shared a grilled cheese which came with cold slaw, salad, and potato salad. We also got a delicious Reese's cookie. I enjoyed the chocolate pistachio latte, the black cherry one was really good too! This cafe is also attached to a hotel. We sat outdoors. Popped into Picnic for a quick lunch and was pleasantly surprised by the amount of delicious baked goods and the quaint atmosphere! We were welcomed in and our questions answered as we ordered. My friends had the summer strawberry salad and I had a bowl of clam chowder (even in summer, chowder makes me happy). Their salads were lovely and portioned well. My chowder came with a ciabatta roll which was the highlight- the chowder too thin and lacked clams- the broth tasty and potatoes held, but it's not a highlight of their menu. We also grabbed a couple of their enormous cookies to go- Reese's PB Cup cookie was soft and sinful and the chocolate chip was the perfect ratio of sweet and salty. This place had some of the best pastries I've had in a while. You can also get a little breakfast sandwiches and really delicious coffee. There's not a lot of space to sit in the back but if you wanna grab something if you're staying nearby, it is definitely worth going. Everything was so delicious and we went there every morning. One of the best pastries I've had! Everything tasted so good and fresh even at the end of the day. We came in 15 minutes before closing but ordered a variety of pastries. Each one of them were good. I stayed at Hotel Viking across the street but I gravitated to Picnic for my morning coffee and lunch. What I was most impressed with was the freshness of everything offered. The baked goods are fresh and baked on premises Soups are made on premises Nice lunch offerings They know how to use the espresso machine Picnic opens at 8? I was at the door 7:59 getting my latte. I must point out, they are many unique breakfast offerings. There are tarts with eggs baked in the middle as well as lots of savory baked item choices. I had lunch here twice, I ordered a New England Clam Chowder and Lobster Salad. A typical New England lunch, I'm sure they're serving these items in grade school with coffee milk. Rhode Island baby! My soup was amazing and came with a side of warm, freshly baked bread. My lobster salad was all lobstery, not made with fillers and was a large portion so no complaints from me. I've been contemplating reviewing this place since I want it to remain the local's little secret. The pastries are the best in Newport and the coffee is great. I love their lobster salad it has tons of lobster. Everyone who works there is super sweet and accommodating. The only issue I have is that they don't allow any laptops for someone to work and sip their coffee. I think it's because it's a small place so it's understandable, but as someone who works from home a lot it's a huge bummer. Overall, awesome place!!! Can't recommend enough. read more

What a cute and charming g little bakery and coffee spot. It is the definition of cozy as you sit surrounded by picnic baskets and Danish accents. The pumpkin latte I had was excellent. Tasted like real pumpkin and not the artificial flavoring you get. The pastries were good but tend to be on the sweeter side. My pistachio swirl was flaky and had a generous spread of pistachio frosting. There are a few tables in the back for seating as well. I'm not sure how I've never been here before ... amazing sandwiches. we got the roast chicken & the prosciutto mozzarella sandwiches and they were amazing. was able to substitute coleslaw for extra potato salad which was also very tasty. Upon entering, the restaurant seems very small- but there is a separate room for dining. The dining room has several different picnic baskets for sale, which I find so charming considering their name. It's a very cute place with pretty pastries on display. The most recent time I went, I ordered my usual - the lobster roll which comes with a side salad, cole slaw, pickle and potato salad. All fresh and absolutely delicious. I've gotten this several time and they are consistent with their high quality. In the past, I've gotten their triple chocolate chip cookie and tuna salad sandwich- both of which were unsurprisingly delicious as well. I recommend this place! read more

Ohhhh what a quaint and deliciously tasty cafe. We stayed across the street for an overnight and had to visit Picnic 2x in less than 24 hours. It's THAT good! IRS a small shop but you can dine in at the few tables they have. We got roped in with their fresh made lattes and amazing.. AHHHHMAZING pastries! I have such a sweet tooth so pastry hunting is my thing! We got a variety of things and the winners were: almond croissant, chocolate croissant, cinnamon swirl, on cookie, custard fruit tart... soooo delicious.. the savory picks were good mainly the ham and cheese croissant.. it was a little dry but the mustard helped! We are staying across the street at Hotel Viking. We were here last week prior to our cruise but missed the opportunity to grab breakfast at Picnic since there was a line out the door. Hotel Viking has lots of weddings so it populates the adjacent retail. And Picnic is not only visually inviting, it is sensually inviting with all the amazing smells of fresh bread, fresh coffee and more. Super excited to have a second opportunity to try their food. As I walk out this morning the line is only a few deep and I queue in. We don't have a lot of time this morning so I cry and grab some pre-made. I'm not worried about freshness as they're consistently bringing out fresh platters of their goodies for their patrons. I grab a ham and cheese croissant. She asked if I'd like to have eggs added. Of course!, con queso!. The second dish is a ham and cheese and egg frittata. Also looks and smells amazing. Babs and I sit out front on the sidewalk like we're in a French bistro café.. Both dishes were incredibly fresh, and warm and yummy! Note: they also have fresh lobster rolls in the back kit hen window. Highly recommended. read more

The barely warm $5 coffee had to be re made- just because it is suppose to be hot! the pasty has a massive amount of poppyseed on top of the egg and dried spinach. why? The pros go to how good my iced chai was and how amazing the food looked in the case. My friend and I stopped in to grab a coffee and possibly a small bite to eat. I'm sensitive to dairy and looked at the menu to see some alternatives for the coffee/tea drinks. The pastries and goodies in the case looked so good and I was curious if any of them were dairy free. I assumed they weren't and it would be understandable/no big deal if they're not. I was planning to look up other places to stop after we left there with coffee that might have options for me. However, I politely asked if any of them were and the lady behind the counter replied, in the most embarrassing and condescending tone "Dairy. Free. Pastries? You're asking if we have Dairy. Free. PASTRIES? No. We don't..." and started shaking her head. I replied "oh, okay! Just curious." and she was still shaking her head at me with a dirty look on her face. My friend ordered a coffee and a tuna salad sandwich. We waited for the sandwich and a young server came out with it and called her order number out. When she said "ooo that's me!" and thanked him he scoffed at her and said "yeah...you're welcome..." walking away from us. We left there so confused as to why the service from everyone was so bizarrely rude. We were trying to think of anything we did wrong, other than ask about the pastries. We were polite and tipped and everything, yet walked out of there completely puzzled. The experience turned us off from the possibility of returning. read more

I stumbled upon Picnic Cafe a few days ago in search of a new spot to get a tea, and I have to say that I am impressed! It's the true definition of a hidden gem, nestled comfortably inside of the Inn on Bellevue, a quaint boutique inn located just steps away from scenic and historic downtown Newport. I stepped inside to see a wide array of coffee and tea beverages available on a charming chalkboard menu, and a tantalizing array of both sweet and savory offerings, everything from Danishes and French pastries to squares of homemade pizza. While I just got a peach unsweetened iced tea, I look forward to returning soon to try some of the tasty menu, which also included heartier offerings like sandwiches and salads. The tea itself was very good, and comparable in price to other tea shops in the neighborhood. While it was unsweetened, it did have a very strong peach flavor, unlike some of the other unsweetened varieties, which are pretty much flavorless. They also offer unsweetened raspberry tea and black tea as well. I am a huge tea drinker, so I'll surely be back for the other kinds soon! Picnic Cafe is reminiscent of a sweet little cafe in Paris, with friendly counter service and modest but clean and well decorated seating for guests. If you need more space, the cafe is adjacent to the lobby of the Inn on Bellevue, where you can sit and sip your drink while poring over an issue of Newport Life magazine or people watching the many interesting folks who are staying here. A teeny, tiny cafe nestled in between some inns and across from Hotel Viking, this little place has everything you need for breakfast, lunch and coffee. There are some bar seats and a few tables in the back and a clean bathroom. Prices were on par with Newport. They had such a wide variety of fun pastries (cakes, tortes, cookies, brownies, croissants, oh my!) they also have espresso beverages and regular coffee along with pre-made breakfast and lunch options. Some cute touches were picnic baskets for sale as well as a few gift ideas like European chocolates and a variety of jams. Needed a quick bite after walking the entirety of the Cliff Walk. Choosing this place was a mistake. I ordered a lobster roll. About 10 mins after I ordered, they told me that they were out of a key ingredient for my order. I was disappointed, but no problem. I was so hungry at that point that anything would've been fine. The barista said she'd refund me after the crowd died down. But the crowd never died down, and I was realllllly hungry. After about 10 more mins, I went up to the crowded register and asked if I had to wait in the long line to get my refund. The barista looked irritated and said emphatically, "YES." So I waited yet another 10 mins. By that time I was so hungry and irritated that I couldn't really enjoy the food. I was sore and tired from the walk, and just wanted to sit down and eat a bite, not stand uncomfortably for 1/2 an hour while the harried barista glared at me. read more
