I brought my truck and utility trailer to this shop for professional trailer wiring. While there, the manager recommended installing an aftermarket electronic brake controller in addition to rewiring the trailer plug and installing rear suspension air bags. I agreed and left the vehicle for the work. Upon pickup, the installation was demonstrated, but on the drive home I discovered the new brake controller never functioned and consistently showed "disconnected," even with a trailer attached. The factory-installed Chevrolet brake controller continues to work normally. The aftermarket unit has never operated as intended. I returned a few days later with another trailer and reported the issue. The controller still did not work, and I became concerned because it appears to be tied into the truck's existing brake wiring. I am not qualified to safely remove or rewire it, and attempting to do so could interfere with the factory brake system. That is exactly why I relied on a professional shop. Because this involves the braking system on a vehicle used for towing, I also have concerns about how an unresolved, professionally installed modification could be viewed from a safety and insurance standpoint if an issue were ever to occur. I was told the issue would be reviewed and that I would receive a follow-up, but I was never contacted. The controller is not returnable, cannot be safely removed by me, and I am unwilling to have further work done on the system given that it was not resolved after multiple visits. This is not about the cost of the part--it is about safety and responsibility. The brake system as currently installed was done by this shop, and any issues related to that installation are beyond my ability to correct. Bought a new Toyota Tacoma in May of 2023 and went right over to Pickup Outfitters in Lodi CA to get a Leer camper shell fitted. They ordered it and all was fine, they installed it, I paid my money and left a happy camper. Or so I thought. Fast forward almost exactly 2 years...I had noticed the shell leaking during the past winter's rains, along the passenger side inside seemingly between the shell and my truck's pickup bed. Leaking quite a bit. I had not noticed it the prior year but hadn't really taken the truck out all that much because I still had my prior Taco and was kind of saving the new one. Wrong approach as it turns out. So I head over to Pickup Outfitters in Lodi to consult as to how to deal with the leak. I knew I was probably past any factory warranty as two years had passed but I figured since it was probably a problem with the install and not the shell nor the truck, they would stand behind their work. Spoke with a Mr Richard Levinson, of Inside Sales, who seemed a very nice gentleman. He looked at the truck and shell and asked me if I had had it removed from the truck. No, sir, have not touched it since you guys installed it. Did you buy it here? Yes, sir, I did in fact buy it there. Did we install it? (This was getting a little tedious but whatever) Yes, sir, you did indeed install it. Do you have the invoice? No not with me, as I live some ways away and just happened to be in the neighborhood and dropped in, but I am sure you can look it up on your computer, right? Well, not exactly, not without the invoice number. Huh. We discussed a likely remedy for the problem: I bring in the truck along with approximately $300 and they could uninstall and reinstall the camper, replacing the gasket between the shell and the bed and/or seeing what else might be amiss. I mentioned that, hey, that seems kind of excessive since I had paid full tilt for both the shell and the install there, so even though it might have been two years, wouldn't they like back their work or at least like split the cost with me...after all its mostly just labor we are talking about. He said to call back the next day with the invoice number and he would talk to his boss and see what he could do. Fair enuff. So I called back the next day with invoice number and Mr Levinson said he would check up on it and get back to me the next day. And indeed, the next day, today in fact, he did call back and left a voice message. He had spoken to Leer and their response was nope, 1 year warranty, and that was that. So, I called him back to see if we could negotiate something a little more fair. Mr Levinson answered and we had a nice chat, but he did not budge from that stance: he said I would need to pay full price plus parts for the R&R of the shell, even when I reminded him that this was mostly a matter of them backing their own service and installation when there was a problem, even though I had let it slide for a year past the material warranty period. This did not persuade Mr Levinson, who repeated that Leer said there was only a 1 year warranty (I failed to ask why he called Leer instead of talking with his boss as he said he was going to do the prior day, because the problem did not appear to me to be a problem with Leer so much as a problem with the local installation) so I asked if perhaps he ever read their Yelp reviews, and he did not seem to understand what I was referring to. I also may have mentioned that I would be more than happy to leave one detailing my current experience. He said that was fine and have a nice day, and I returned the sentiment. Very pleasant man to chat with, I will give them that. So, here we are...I need to find someone to remove and reinstall my camper shell because I sure as heck am not going to pay these folks any more money to remedy a problem that near as I can see they caused, not to mention the fact they don't seem all that sympathetic to my situation and actually much more focused on separating me from some more of my cash. I thought others might benefit from my experience. Would I buy a camper shell from these folks in the future for any further vehicles I buy? I think the attentive reader can figure out the answer to that question pretty easily. So, in summary, while these folks are fine to buy something from, its the installation and service after the sale that might cause problems. I would advise potential buyers to consider other options before plinking down their cash (cash money, because, as mentioned in another review, they want a "service charge" for paying with a credit card) or at least paying strict attention to any warranty expirations and making sure you do not dawdle on making any problems known to them in a timely manner. Bought a snug top shell, installed in the spring, when it finally started to rain, it leaked in the front left side. Called and was told to bring it down, I did, they asked me when did you buy this, it had been 5 months, I had no ideal that it leaked until it finally rained. The guy in charge told me to basically "go fly a kite". So I left without them looking at the problem. I recently took off the shell, to find the front flap bent over half way across, which was the cause of the leak, they installed it wrong, obviously didn't care. Now the rubber is no good, if they would have taken 5 minutes to look, it would have been taken care of. Crappy service, crappy customer service, don't go there! read more

Just so plain awful, I don't know where to begin. I loaned my dump trailer to a friend and the wiring was loose and needed some repair. I figured just put a new end on the seven pin connector. I have replaced it before. The running lights, brake lights, turn signals all good just brake control smelled burnt. So for prevention I knew to take it to the experts this time. I have replaced a brake controller before w no issues. Trailer is ten years old. They told me the whole trailer needed rewiring and new brake controller. They charge 137$ an hour for labor and the bill was to be approximately 900$ with five hours of labor. Bummer, but fine, I use the trailer all the time and kids need it too for moving w college( needs to be very safe) Dropped off on May 18th picked up on May 25. The bill was 807.14. I popped up the bed of the dump trailer to see the new wires and there was a 7way wire black going back to the axels. However under the compartment for the battery box the wire was cut and not going anywhere for real. Fake wire job! Sorry no picture! I had them take the wire to nowhere off and found out it was not rewired ! I was credited 58.46$ for the fact that the wire was not used. Nothing for the 5 hours labor to install the wire. They left two T-taps on the wires going to the axles, they removed them but did not tape the exposed wires. I also needed a new brake away pin cable which they didn't have( cheap part). I went to buy a cable and was gone like 30 min. I smelled burning something in the trailer and the small battery for the brake control was starting to burn. Immediately I dropped the trailer back off at Pickup outfitters and unhooked the power. They left my trailer along side the fence this whole week and not inside protected. Vandalism is a concern in this area and nothing would protect from someone just stealing it. They also require a debit card or cash or they charge 3 1/2 % extra for using a credit card. They replaced the small battery and a solenoid and directly wired something to the large 12 volt battery used for the dump trailer. They caused this but said no $ returned. This was so beyond a bad experience. read more

The Manager will act like your friend, and call you "buddy" and give you just enough to think you can trust him. DON'T, get it in writing, and even if you do, they won't do quality work. If you bring it back in, they will put a bandaid on it, and wish you never stepped foot in there. If your just going to buy a part, go for it. I wanted to switch out an aftermarket hitch welded to the frame of my truck and replace it with a better one. The local shops either weren't returning phone calls, or didn't seem to want the job. Pickup Outfitters was recommended by an RV retailer nearby, so I gave them a call. Very glad I did. I initially spoke with Daniel, and then was helped by Wes and Marty on the day of my appointment, as well as the guys in back. They were ready for me when I arrived, had the correct parts ordered in, kept me informed of progress during the day and solved several issues not of their doing promptly and competently. And---get this---because they were competent and knew what they were doing, they didn't take as much time as estimated, so the total cost was a couple hundred dollars LESS than what I'd already authorized, and this was after having to unexpectedly call in another welder with a cutting torch and re-installing a camper tie-down that needed some fabrication work. Wow. I was very happy with the work, they were very polite and pleasant (I invaded their waiting area for a good part of the day while they did the job) and didn't even mind my dog hanging out with me while I waited. This is a solid 90-minute drive for me, especially during morning and afternoon traffic, but I'll make the drive again the next time I need work done. Well worth it the trip. read more

Disappointed by the knowledge of the people here - I bought a truck with a Quadzilla chip installed and wanted it removed. While the staff weren't familiar with that brand, they assured me they could uninstall it and I made an appointment for later in the week. When I showed up, the mechanic poked around in my truck for a few minutes and looked at the installation manual I'd brought, but was unable to answer any questions about the function of the chip or how the truck would run after it was uninstalled. Since I need to smog the truck, I figured it didn't matter that much - the chip needed to be uninstalled and I said so. That's when the staff said "you want me to make an appointment for you for that?" Um, I thought THAT appointment was to uninstall the chip - I certainly didn't plan on coming back! Since they didn't have time for me (despite my appt) I left and called another place who not only knew what a Quadzilla chip was, but were actually able to answer my questions! read more

Buyer beware, in May I ordered a Leer camper shell. It came in the week of June 12th. I had it installed June 16th Then the problems started . I came back on June 26 to tell Wes of the problems with the shell. 1- the shell hang out 3/4 inch on each side it was to wide. 2- the color did not match my truck color. 3- the electronics in the shell did not work. 4- the bed rail did not fit flush with the truck 3/4 inch rise between the hold downs. I suggested that I drive to Woodland where it is made they can see the problems and take it off there save shipping it. Days later I was told Leer does not let Customer go there. So I returned it to Pickup Outfitters on July 7th. I was refunded my money for the shell but still had to pay the install fee. July 27th I was told by Wes that they looked at it. That it was not right and that they where building me a new shell. On August 18th still hadn't herd anything from Wes, so I called him. He told me he got confirmation it will be in the first of next week. I did not hear from them so I stopped by on Sept 5th Wes said they had got it last week. We made an appointment to put it on Sept 7th. Well this shell was the same problems so I'm in belief that they didn't send the shell back and that this was the same shell originally sent. I don't believe that Pickup Outfitters pursued to correct this problem and figured I would just go away. This was 4 months of BS. During this whole time I did not receive one call from Wes, It was only me going in or calling him. I was very patient and trying to find a solution, but that was just one sided. read more
