Oh holy pickle, this café is really exciting!
Pickle in the Middle began their journey as a pop up stall in the Adelaide Central Markets. The stall showcased awesome cheesy pickle toasties and an arrangement of pickled local produce. After being an absolute hit with the locals, they have opened this lovely establishment.
This café really shows that if you work hard enough, you can achieve your goals. What an impressive job they have done! The layout of the café is open, fresh and inviting. A big long bar kitchen area is the main feature piece, surrounded by modern styled café tables and chairs.
Upon my arrival, I was greeted by a lovely waitress who seated me and guided me through the menu. But, I knew what I wanted before I arrived. Pickle cheese toastie, oh yeah! How could I not? Every review of Pickle in the Middle claims that they make the best toasties in Adelaide. However, after revising the menu I was also tempted to try the Beet Cured Salmon. Maybe next time. Bring on the cheese toastie!
So, after a giggle with my waitress I ordered the ever beckoning toastie and a refreshing glass of lemon myrtle iced tea.
I did not have to wait long for my meal and I could not wipe the smile from my face.
In my opinion, to make the perfect cheese toastie you need three things. 1: To choose your bread carefully (thick slices is preferable). 2: Good quality sharp cheese. 3: Must be cooked on a flat grill plate or saucepan (none of this toastie machine stuff). And boy did they deliver.
My toastie was cooked to perfection, a lovely golden brown on the outside and thick gooey cheese on the inside. The zucchini pickle accompaniment was simply divine; pickled with mustard seeds, onion, and the right amount of sweetness and acidity. The toastie to my surprise as also served with a yummy pickled small cucumber and a small portion of a salad. The lemon myrtle iced tea was so refreshing and really worked well with the cheese toastie.
So, the verdict: Yes, this was one of the best toasties I have eaten in Adelaide. Well done guys! I think this café may be the talk of the town very soon!
