Going for a walk around the area decided to stop in for a slice of pizza, don't judge me I walked the pizza off after So I was nervous when I saw the pizza in the the display box I was like, that dose not look appetizing but my bf told me they heat it up for you so it's like a hot fresh slice lol .... I didn't know. We end up getting the meat lovers (idk that's the name of it on menu) but it was delicious, i usually add salt pepper and some parmesan or red pepper flakes to my pizza but with this slice, i added nothing! What was disappointing is not the space wasn't really clean table top were dirty and the bathroom was not very clean at all. I grew up in Brooklyn and am a Pizza snob. Every place likes to advertise "New York Style Pizza" because it a fad and a marketing strategy. Been like this for decades. The truth is you typically can't get NY style pizza outside NY. It has to do with the water, they way the dough is made, the type of oven, and the process. It's technically possible to replicate but difficult and most won't do it. Most places outside NY just make "big foldable pizza", slap on a marketing logo and call it "NY Style" to make sales to locals. I moved out of New York in the late 90s and have lived in Boston, LA, Houston, Seattle, and many big cities. All claim NY Style Pizza. Most are marketing hype. I can't stomach them. Got too used to NY pizza. I try to grab a slice whenever I got back and visit NYC. Nothing outside NY comes close. No matter how much they claim "NY Style." Until I moved to Richmond 6 months ago and tried Piccola. I don't know what they do or how they do it, but they managed to bring the style and taste of NY into this place. Something, I haven't seen anywhere else for decades. God forbid they ever go out of business; I'll have nowhere to eat pizza other than when I visit NYC again. read more

After I ordered he repeated the order to make sure everything was right. This was a total strike out for me. I'm so bummed too, because the photos on Yelp from others looked so much better than what I was given. I ordered their lasagna and a pepperoni pizza. I love lasagna in general and it's probably my most-ordered pasta at this point. This one came charred (see photo). Plus the cheese was so chewy I kept almost choking. I didn't find it enjoyable at all. It came with garlic bread, which wasn't bad. I also ordered a small caesar salad that came loaded with croutons, although I did like the dressing. Been a long while since I've been here. Ordered a medium pepperoni and sausage pizza at the outdoor window with a couple of drinks. The bottled Pepsi and tea were not very cold. The pizza was delicious. The older gentleman that took the order was pleasant and patient with me as I asked the price difference between four slices and a whole pizza. Thus far, Piccola's is my favorite spot to grab a Philly cheesesteak in Richmond hands down. All of the ingredients taste fresh and flavorful, especially the melted provolone cheese, which they use plenty of, and the juicy steak! Every time I place an order my food comes out piping hot. Even when i order pickup, which I do often, by the time I make it home my cheesesteak is the perfect temperature. Not only is the cheesesteak amazing but the pizza slices are great as well. Never had a problem with customer service, all of the employees I've encountered have been cool and polite. The venue is pretty small so I wouldn't come with a large group. If you feel like getting out of the house and want to eat in with friends then I wouldn't recommend coming with more than 2 or 3 friends in case they happen to be busy. Otherwise you might find yourself shoulder to shoulder with a rando. They have 2 TV's for your viewing pleasure if you decide to dine in or if you're waiting on your food to be prepared. read more

If you're a VCU student looking for a quick/good lunch with a beer (like me) or in the mood for something heartier in terms of Italian fare, this is a suitable choice. The pizza is decent, though if you're the kind of person who dabs at their pizza to remove grease, you'll be here for a while if you catch my drift. I've had their Italian fare as well and it is pretty average (I've worked at two Italian restaurants, so I have some basis for comparison here) though it will work if you're looking to get full and have dreams of bathing in marinara sauce. Service is average as well. TV usually has Italian programming and/or sports on. Overall, pretty average on all counts. (Though cheap Peroni is awesome!) Overall: 2.5 stars --------- Pros: -CHEAP BEER, cheap GOOD beer! A pint of Peroni was only about $3 here, and that's a darn good deal for a darn good draft! Other beers were well-priced, though really, why would you get a domestic at an Italian place? :-P Cons: -Slices are a bit on the pricey side ($2.62 a slice plus toppings), so if you're the kind of person who usually has two big slices and a drink (aka me), a lunch will set you back more than $8. My favorites are the pizza(any kind), the subs (steak and cheese sub and Italian sub are fire), all the pasta(carbonara is my favorite), the appetizers are all dank(mozzarella sticks are so good) also the fries are crinkle cut and perfectly crispy on outside and fluffy on inside, and the calzones are so good and fresh. Good food! The pizza has a perfect amount of cheese, they loaded it with fresh looking and tasting toppings, and the crust was crunchy. The bruschetta was perfect! So fresh! All of the employees are amazingly sweet and very helpful. The interior was clean and all the stuff in condiments section was fully stocked. (Napkin dispensers at the tables and so on.)
