    Straciatella

This was probably the best gelato we had while in Rome. I don't know if it is because the place was less touristy and felt more authentic, or if it was because of the creaminess of the gelato. I think it is definitely worth a visit while in Rome. They had a ton of different flavors, but straciatella was amazing. My husband had the lemon sorbet and it was really refreshing and tangy. The people behind the counter didn't speak much English, but enough for us to order and enjoy.

So, the Google Map-ing for Rome is a little tough, but if this is the same place, it's called Alberto Pica and is just off the #8 tram on the edge of the Trastevere neighborhood in Rome. From the Monte Verdi neighborhood, take the 8 toward Torre Argentina, and get off the stop before the river. Cross the street, and you'll find this place tucked in a few paces back off the main road. This Place Does Not Mess Around With The Gelato. Holy shit. Plenty of places that are really bright and colorful and almost Japanime-looking all over Rome have gelato that is... fine, not bad by a stretch, but likely something you could find in the states. ("Blue Ice" is one of these bright, mediocre places that has chains all over Rome.) However, Pica Alberto is a fully legit artisan gelateria, full of mostly old dudes who don't speak a word of English. PRO TIPS: One, get the rice pudding, combo'd with chocolate if that's your thing. I found that getting a smaller size (the 2.50 euro size at this place) was perfect and allowed me to eat gelato whenever I pleased (read: almost every day) without feeling guilty about the caloric intake. Second best flavor is the cinnamon rice pudding, paired with vanilla or chocolate depending on your taste. Two, if you're unfamiliar with how it works over there: order first, then pay at the end of the room at the cashier. Three, if your Italian is lacking: "Posso avere un gelato" is the rough translation of "Would it be possible to have a gelato", and then you can point or rough out the price size you'd like, and then read the flavors off the signs. BEST BEST BEST BEST BEST.

Okay, real talk here: It's a rare thing that I don't like gelato. It's also a rare thing that I can say I've had the most delicious gelato of my time on earth as a human. I tried the pistachio, sugar chestnut and rice w/ fresh whipped cream and an espresso on the side and I basically died. This stuff is fresher than fresh, sweeter than sweet, fluffier than a freaking fluffy ass cloud. The establishment is your traditional no-frills Italian ice cream bar but the gelato is quite the opposite. I will be back!

Expecting it to be there one year, I walked over to Piazza Navona and Gelateria Navona had evidently closed. I would then get gelato here and there. I then learned that Giolitti is a long standing gelateria and it's also in the historic center. I filed the name away in my head. Then, one day, I happened to walk right in front of it without even looking for it, so I went in. Giolitti is popular and it can be crowded. I'm going to say that I waited about 10 to 15 minutes. You pay at a counter first, deciding on what you want and how much of it, such as scoops and whether it will be in a cup or a cone. Once up at the counter, they don't rush you, which surprised me. I don't take that much time since I don't experiment much, but I still appreciate the courtesy. The price is roughly what everyone else in the historic center is charging. I always opt for the gelato it in a cup so you can "control" the dripping. The gelato - a mix of dark chocolate and two citrus flavors - was "molto buono." That said, just because it's so popular, I'm not going to downgrade Giolitti for it and complain about the crowds. You downgrade gourmet donut places in the U.S. where their fame has gone to their heads. There is also a spacious salon with nicer decor in which you can eat inside. At this point, Giolitti is really the only gelateria in Rome whose name I remember. I would gladly go back and I recommend it.

Our guide said this is his favorite gelato spot, owing to the creativity of flavors and rotating menu offerings. We liked it so much we went back once on our own. They were busy both times, with a line out the door, but the people working were friendly and patient (which was especially noticeable on our first visit, when a group of 10 tourists wandered in after a few hours drinking, eating and drinking our way through the town.) The did have some interesting flavor combos lined up for us to try, but I went with the flavors I craved. Everything was tasty and creamy, and the serving sizes were generous. They offered whipped cream on top of each portion as well, which we passed on, the gelato was yummy and creamy enough without the added cream. The shop is tiny (explains the line) but clean, and they do a good job of labeling each of the vats of gelato they have on display. Definitely a winner, and seemed to be quite popular with locals.

One spoonful confirms it: the gelato is creamy, smooth, and beautifully balanced.
