One of my favorite highlights in Florence is to stop at the Piazzale Michelangelo and soak in the stunning panoramic view of the beautiful city.
So easy to find famous landmarks from this birds-eye view. The Duomo. Ponte Vecchio. The Arno River. Palazzo Vecchio. The bell tower.
Look for the green oxidized copper roof of the Great Synagogue of Florence. This was planned so that it would stand out in the Florence skyline. It was designed in the Italian and Moorish architectural style and completed in 1882. During WWII, it was used as a storehouse. It was saved by the Italian resistance fighters from being destroyed as the German troops retreated, but was damaged by explosives. It was restored after the war and again after the Arno River flooded Florence in 1966.
Look for a bronze copy of Michelangelo's David. Such a beautiful landmark in the piazza.
A beautiful place to stop and enjoy an amazing view of Florence. read more
