I had a great experience here. I work just down the street so it was great to check out something so close to me. Desiree my server, made me feel so comfortable and taken care of. I spoke with the chef and shared our love of learning so much in the Berkeley / Oakland area dining scene as chefs. We had some of the same inspirations and chefs. I felt I could really taste this in the sauce and within the depth of flavor in each bite. It's hard to find a place that makes everything from scratch. This place is one of those. Lovely design of the restaurant interior with rock walls, open area and lush woods. The service was exceptional, very friendly and attentive waiter. The food was delicious. We had the cocktail special, which was tasty and refreshing. The pasta was fresh and good, but the real stars were the rack of lamb, the steak and the pork chop. We also loved the Caesar salad and the bruschetta two ways. This was a fancier restaurant than others in Truckee, although some folks still wore shorts to dinner and others wore lovely dresses and heels, so a real combination. This was truly was celebratory meal that was exceptional. I didn't give the 5th star because the restaurant was quite noisy. We were upstairs, which is a lovely space, but there were two large tables and the space became too loud. read more

Worst treatment ever! Online reservations for a four-top at Pianeta's were unavailable Wednesday, July 29, so my party stopped in to see if there might be a last minute opening. The host, Ashley, at the front station by the door said she could get us 4 seats at the bar once the 5pm seating finished up. It was almost 6pm so that sounded reasonable. She estimated the wait would be 20-40 minutes. Over the next hour I checked in repeatedly with her. From the street, I could see her turning away other walk-ups and taking many phone calls. I even popped in to say I could see she was working hard, appreciated her work, and we'd wait out the bar crowd. I could also see that the bar a few steps down from her station was bustling. But close to 7pm 3 seats had opened and Ashely said a fourth individual was just leaving; it would be only a few minutes more for my party. As I waited at the front station, some fellow from the floor came up and spoke to her. A minute later she turns to me and has the audacity to say "there's a party of four ahead of you that I didn't know about ... I didn't know." Whaat? Was Ashley in charge of the house or did a fellow employee just throw her and me under the bus for a friend or someone with more pull? No explanation, no apology. I could easily have just walked in, sat down at the bar or made a fuss, but who wants spit in their food? Sure enough, a minute later a group arrives, passes me by, and is swiftly seated in the 4 open bar seats. Ashley weakly says that it might be another 40 minutes but that if a 7pm reservation doesn't show up, she'll seat us at a table. I stupidly wait another 5 minutes. She then says she tried calling the 7pm reservation to confirm but didn't get an answer, could I wait another 10 minutes to see? I simply tell her "we're going." To add insult, at 7:30 we get a text saying we've been taken off the wait list. Next time in North Tahoe I'll be back at the excellent Christy Hill, my usual stop. I won't support Pianeta's or any business willing to treat someone this poorly, perhaps including their own employees. read more

I sincerely hope the owner takes the time to read this review. As someone who owns a service-based business, I understand how valuable honest customer feedback can be. Unfortunately, if I could rate Pianeta zero stars, I would and here is why... My boyfriend and I arrived a little early for our dinner reservation and asked the host if we could enjoy a drink at the bar while we waited. We were told that would be perfectly fine. The bar was busy, but there were a few single stools sprinkled about. There were also several empty tables in the bar area, yet we were told we could not sit at any of them. As we made our way over to one of the single stools, we witnessed the host telling several gentlemen that they were not permitted to stand at the bar. They appeared to leave the restaurant as a result. Nearly every guest seated at the bar was dining. At the far end of the bar, there was a couple with an empty stool on either side of them. I politely asked if they would mind each moving over one seat so my boyfriend and I could sit together. They were incredibly kind and graciously agreed, and we were excited for the opportunity to enjoy a pre-dinner beverage. However, before we could even sit down, the host rushed over and told us we could not sit there because those two bar seats were being held for another reservation--even though those seats had only become available because the couple had generously rearranged themselves for us. Feeling embarrassed and unwelcome, we decided to leave and cancel our dinner reservation. What was most disappointing was the complete lack of concern from the host. There was no attempt to apologize, explain the situation, or salvage the evening. It was clear that losing our business meant nothing. My boyfriend is a Tahoe Donner resident and a fan of Italian cuisine, and we were genuinely looking forward to dining here. Unfortunately, after this experience, we won't be returning. The issue wasn't simply that the restaurant was busy or had seating policies--it was the dismissive and inhospitable way we were treated. My husband, four-year-old son, and I visited Pianeta on a Wednesday while on vacation in Tahoe/Truckee. The restaurant is two levels, and like most of Truckee, the restaurant is in a restored building. I love this about Truckee! We were promptly seated, and if I recall correctly, Arturo was our server. He was friendly and attentive throughout the evening. Pianeta does not offer a children's menu, but they accommodated our son by making him butter pasta with all of the freshly grated parmesan cheese his lil' heart desired. I ordered the potato leek soup and ravioli bolognese. Who orders soup on a warm summer evening? Meeeeee! It was delicious. I was given the option to eat the soup cold or warm, and I chose the latter. My ravioli was enough for two people. I enjoyed it, but I couldn't finish all of it. The meat sauce was so good. The crispy gnocchi that accompanied my husband's steak was a welcome surprise. It was more like fried potatoes, and we both enjoyed the gnocchi! The limoncello pound cake and vanilla gelato was a nice way to end the meal. We come here often. We are a family of 5. The food is good. The service varies by day and whether they are busy. What's annoying though, and is why this is a two stars review, is the fact that they add a "large party" 20% gratuity for a family of 5! Really? Large party? When I asked a simple question on the menu, the answer was short and blunt. It was clear she was ready to wrap her shift. Extra bread? Sorry, we are out. Strange, as the table next to us just got some. Delays on drinks, when reminded her - smug attitude. Before we were finished, asked to run the bill - twice. Rushed. Upon leaving, passive aggressively said to the bartender " $40 tip on $300?" - as we were walking by. We were cordial, respectful family - no issues from us. I only left the tip for the bartender and chef as the food was excellent otherwise, I would have left $0. I spent 20 years in customer service - a tip is not required yet earned. I haven't left below a 25% tip in over a decade (we are very generous and respect good service) but this was the worst service at a high-end $$$ restaurant I have ever had. Do better - the team behind the server works hard, you are the face of our experience. Respect them with a friendly face and show appreciation for patronage especially when you are spending good money. It's really not that hard. read more

Came here for a late dinner date. They get fairly busy, even on weekdays just so you know. We put our names on the list for bar seating and got in after about 45 minutes. But let me tell you, it was well worth the wait! The risotto was hands down one of the best meals I've ever had. So much flavor and loads of seafood! Great Italian restaurant in the downtown Truckee area, with some small hiccups. The ambiance is nice with a downstairs bar area and an upstairs dining area. There is parking available in front of the restaurant. The reservation process is a hassle. You can book a reservation online but you are required to leave a $25 deposit/person. If you need to change the reservation- good luck calling the restaurant and actually getting ahold of them. We left many voicemails that were left unreturned. I was also surprised by the required deposit. Many local high-end restaurants don't even require a deposit like that. The staff were incredibly friendly. The service was quick and attentive. The food was good as well. However, I don't think the prices are worth it and I found it to be quite steep. We started with the Bruschetta and Caprese - both of which were great. I really liked the pesto and balsamic sauce on the Caprese. Two people at our table ordered the Ravioli Bolognese as the entree, which I thought was good. It was pretty cheesy on top but I still liked it. The other two people at our table got the Grilled Sausage and Tagliatelle and seemed to like it. The desserts have an interesting twist to them. We got the Chocolate Polenta Puddle Cake which is essentially a lava cake with the texture of polenta and we got the Tiramisu which was akin to the classic way it's served. I liked both of the desserts. Looks like the menus need to be updated. For example, the website says the Tiramisu is $12 (menu says $15) and the Chocolate cake on the website is $12 but the menu says $14). Prices must be continuously increasing! read more

Our family came here for dinner. There is an upstairs and downstairs, as well as outdoor seating. We chose upstairs when we made the reservation. The restaurant feels like an old style Italian one, as soon as you walk in the door. The restaurant offers a good variety of pasta, as well as protein dishes. We got the bread basket. It was a nice warm basket that was hard to resist. We also got the bruschetta two ways. One was the classic style and the other had prosciutto and cheese. Both were great. I liked the prosciutto one for a little twist. For main food dishes, we got the ravioli bolognese, lamb chops, and prawns with pasta. The kids loved their ravioli dish. They liked it so much that they took the leftover ragu home so they could add more pasta to it and have the dish again. The prawn with pasta was served in a white wine, caper sauce, with a red pepper coulis drizzle. It was good, but I don't think the dish needed the coulis. The lamb was my favorite. It was so delicious and perfectly cooked. I would definitely order it again if it were on the menu. For dessert, we got the crème brûlée. We had our New Year's dinner here. We were a family with two children, one is 2 years old and the other is 6. You charged full price for kids, but both children only ate pasta with meat sauce. No one informed us that even if the kids only had pasta, they would still be charged the full price. If we had known this in advance, we would have made a different decision. Charging over $100 for a 2-year-old who only ate a small plate of pasta makes absolutely no sense. On top of that, the service did not meet the standard expected for a New Year's dinner. We ordered wine pairing, but the wines were never served together with the courses. Most of the time, the wine arrived when we were almost finished eating. What exactly was being "paired" then? We are very willing to spend money on a New Year's dining experience, but the service and value should at least match the price. Well, the food, service and ambiance was ok BUT there were folk trying to cut into the wait line for the wait line seat at the bar. Now, about this line, it starts to ramp up around 4:30 pm in anticipation of the 5:00 pm door opening. Remember now 14 SEATS!!!! (This couple cuts in the line and ousted another couple., Fortunately, that ousted couple are Truckee residents and chose not to make an issue as they all the days in the world to wait for seat at the bar.. How nice is that? OK Rant DONE Food was decent. There were 4 of us so we each selected one dish and we shared... so we could taste as many dishes possible. They offer a plate of warm french/sourdough bread with a neat oil and vinager carafe... Meat Balls, Duck, Ravioli, Salad, and oh, let me not forget; we had to try their pizza. All dishes delivered and served well as well as tasted great! I need to admit though, unless I was organized enough to make a reservation 2.5 months out I doubt I stand in that line again. I was running 15 minutes late so I called to let them know and they accommodated us and thanked me for calling upon arrival. I ordered a whiskey drink which was on their specials menu, unique flavoring. We had bread with olive oil and balsamic, moist and fresh. We split an arugula salad which was delicious with blood orange sweet tang. Both of us opted for the ravioli bolognese, the sausage had a nice spice, not overwhelming. We had the same size glass & putting them next to each other my glass was a good 1/2 inch shorter in serving. This is a cute local spot with authentic Italian food! Everything seems to be made from scratch with great attention to detail on quality and flavor. We had a 7:15 reservation but were able to get in early and sit at the bar - from the minute we walked through the door, the service was unbelievable. Every staff member was working hard to make it a great experience. I had the drink special (amaretto sour) which was delicious and have to say that the bartenders turn out an incredible number of complicated cocktails! We shared the carpaccio (amazing with high quality Piedmontese beef), my husband had the soup special and bolognese and I had the seafood risotto. For dinner, we decided to visit Pianeta based on a few recommendations from Hotel staff where we stayed. We did not have a reservation but luckily there was an open table on the second floor tucked away in the corner near the kitchen. At first, when we sat down, I thought it was very warm and had to take off my sweater. As the meal went on, it seemed like a window or door was opened because then it got cool again and the sweater went back on. Our waitress was nice and provided great service. She was also apologetic about the table to our right that was very loud. They seemed to be shouting at each other instead of talking but we ignored them as best we could. The food was excellent and a definite highlight of our trip. We started with soup and salad. (Soup for me and Salad for the wife) We had a corn soup that was amazing and the salad was tasty too. We each ordered a pasta dish and were both delighted with our selections. We moved on to dessert and enjoyed that even though I did not have room for it. Everything tasted great and had a nice presentation and the staff was very attentive to us. Love this place! Great food and service! We started with drinks then moved into our courses. Drinks: Lemon Drop (3 Stars) Deadmans Handle (3 Stars) Chairman of the board (3 Stars) Espresso Martini (3 Stars)... with dessert First Course - Antipasto: Steamed Clams with Sausage (5 Stars) I usually don't order seafood so far from the sea, but the quality at this restaurant is so great I knew they would source fresh ingredients, and they didn't disappoint. The clams have an option to be serviced with sausage and pasta, so we added sausage (awesome addition) but not the pasta. This was not our pasta course, but if you want this as a main the pasta would be awesome as the sauce was awesome. The 2 lemon wedges were perfect to squeeze over top. The sausage was large ground chucks intermixed with the clams that were fresh and perfectly cooked. One of the best steamed clams dishes I've had, get some! Bread Basket (3 Stars) The bread was decent but they charged. The bread was not that special too charge for, should be free. Second Course - Salad: Insalata Robyn (3 Stars) Good salad but nothing stood out as special. Third Course - Pasta (gotta have to have a pasta course, right?): Tagliolini Bolognese (4.5 Stars) Really good pasta, fresh made, love the wavey look and texture. The sauce was also very good. I took .5 because I like braised chucks of meat, but the ground is still really good. Love the freshly grated Parmesan service at the table. Nice touch! Fourth Course - Mains: Risotto Di Mare (4.5 Stars) All the seafood was perfectly cooked (not over cooked) great fresh flavor, well season shrimps (no tail, perfect for risotto). I took .5 for the rice not being loose enough. Seafood risotto needs to be softer (more stock) than others, it should be like runny porridge, rather than perfectly soft porridge. Still very good and well seasoned. The fish stock they used was perfect, great flavor for the rice. Lastly the addition of chopped cherry tomatoes, slightly cooked, brought be back to Capri. Great dish! Alaskan Halibut (4 Stars) Good quality, perfectly seasoned and cooked. The broccolini (5 Stars) was awesome, parboiled then charred and lemon added, perfect! The rest of the dish was great, some small pasta with pesto. Fifth Course - Dessert: Bittersweet Chocolate Torte with Cherry Sauce (4 Stars) Great presentation with the cherry sauce top with chocolate sauce, really cool. The torte was dense chocolate but not dry. Served with gelato and sliced strawberry. Great dessert! Lastly the service was great, perfectly paced and they were on top of the silverware, small plates for sharing, dish for clam shells and filled water. The food was excellent, the drinks were yummy and the service was superior. One tiny complaint is the noise - even on the second floor it was very loud.
