Last year was the year of The Sawyer at Schaffer's Mill, but before that we went to PJ's and this year, we returned, and so happy we did. This restaurant, part of the Gray's Crossing community/golf outside of town is open to the public, at all times. The restaurant, mostly outside, is also right up on a huge grass space, perfect and popular with kids. This is definitely a family friendly spot - we ate early, around 545 on a Friday and it was either families with younger kids or golfers. And the food is really good and for Truckee, reasonable. The poke bowl was HUGE and while not a huge amount of tuna, it was beyond filling with the rice, edamame, seaweed salad and so on. The calamari was a small portion but delicious. Someone had the burger with bacon jam... WOW. Decadent and delicious. The cocktails are good, although not super boozy forward. Service was fine. Again, ambiance and family friendly environment is top notch. The food is really good and prices on par with restaurants in town. My kids playing soccer while we wait for the food while my husband and I enjoy a cocktail surrounded by trees with mountain peaks in the distance = five stars. read more

I have been coming to PJ's for many years to enjoy the views, the food, and the service. The location and golf course is in a quiet part of Truckee, and it's beautiful to sit outside during the day and the evening - when it gets cold, they have heat lamps around, too. Everything we have gotten has been great, and I especially love their old fashioned. The last time we went they were a few days away from closing for the season so they were out of a few food items and draught beers, but the server was as kind and accommodating as she could be, and we still had a lovely night. The peach, burrata, and crispy prosciutto salad is hands down one of the best salads I've ever had, and the peaches are sweet enough that it felt like a little treat. I definitely recommend stopping here for a relaxing meal where you can enjoy feeling like you're still in nature, with some of the best food and vibes Truckee has to offer. read more

I can't speak for the food, because we ended up leaving due to the incredibly lacking service experience. We arrived with 3 adults and a hungry toddler around 2 pm on a Friday. There was almost nobody there (1 table eating, 1 person at the bar drinking), and yet we waited 10 minutes for the hostess to yell over from the bar that she'll be right with us. On her way over, finally, she stopped to chat with two workmen fixing the windows about how they're doing, how they haven't seen each other for a while, etc., despite us being two feet away with now a melting down kid. She then barks at us that we can sit wherever we want - great! That would have been good to know 15 min prior. I choose a nice outdoor table with a sun shade, only to have her tell me I cannot sit there, she is going to take the umbrellas down because "it will get windy later" and the umbrellas "fall easily." Okay cool, but it's not windy now, so can I sit here? No. She then wipes a different random table, leaves the menus and silverware on one of the chairs (?!), and leaves us. We took a look at the menu and decided it wasn't likely that the $30 average lunch entree would be worth having to continue being treated like this. PJ is live music series is literally the best music series in Truckee. It beats the city of Truckee in talent and in the view. So, do you know the food seen in Truckee? Well, everything else here is amazing but the food is mediocre at best. You are not going to be impressed with PJs if you are from Los Angeles, San Francisco, or any other city with a vibrant 15. I used to live in Grays Crossing, and have been to PJ's innumerable times. I had lunch there today and was very disappointed in the peach-burrata cheese salad. There were only a few thin slices of peaches, but the worst part were the mixed greens. They were completely limp, old, and over-saturated with dressing. I did tell the waiter/bar tender, and expected to hear an apology at a minimum, and to offer a discount or a replacement. I left 3/4 of the lettuce in my bowl. Nothing was said or done, very disappointing. I don't think I will come again. read more

My 2 girlfriends and I just had the most delightful meal at PJ's. We were staying at Old Greenwood, and weren't too hungry, but wanted a quick bite to eat and a cocktail. We were the only people there. We were greeted by Juan, who told us he sent the wait staff home because it was slow but he would take care of us. He made our cocktails and we all thought they were great. We split a Chicken Potsticker appetizer and the 3 of us split a Chicken Marsala. The food was amazing. The Chicken Marsala was different than what we were expecting. It was in a white cream sauce, and we all thought it was the best we ever had! Father's Day dinner was subpar for the price and experience we were there for. I would not recommend the restaurant for the service you get for the prices they offer. Waitress did not bring enough waters to our table the entire evening and did not know the menu very well. Order came out in waves and my medium steak was well done. A couple of us ordered steaks at medium and they all came out well done. Waitress said the kitchen was closed and they couldn't redo the steaks. Potatoes were undercooked and bland. Didn't bother sending back because the waitress did not come by often enough to warrant asking. Drinks were ok but nothing special. They were out of mixes for a few of the overpriced drinks so the options were limited. Only thing worth noting was the view. I've been wanting to try this place since it was posted in the Truckee/Tahoe locals FB group I came in w/o a reservation and with a puppy. I was greeted and told to have a seat at any table that was available The server brought some water for me and the puppy and explained their process You can either order and pay through the link from the QR code or you can step inside the restaurant and order as well I ordered and paid using the QR code link. It was easy and the food came out pretty quickly. I wanted a lite dinner so I ordered one of their appetizers and a drink I had the lavender lemonade, very delicious and it had just the right amount of alcohol For dinner I had their shrimp appetizer. The only thing I would suggest to the restaurant about this dish, please use seedless watermelon. My watermelon had some seeds in it Overall, I had a great experience. The food was average. The service was abominable! We had a chg of servers, which was fine. They forgot an entree & never brought the appetizer over first, after forgetting it. My husband & I had to go up to Truckee on our last free Sunday to close up our camp site. After several hours working fo get it all done, we were hungry, but didn't necessarily want one of our go-to places. Yelp it is, and we found PJ's. Let me just say - we will definitely be back. It was their last day of the season, too, so a couple of their menu items weren't available, but that didn't matter to us. My husband had an amazing hamburger with onion rings, OMG! To. Die. For. I had the tri-tip French dip with fries - delicious! We're pretty sure PJ's made the list of our "regular" spots next spring when they re-open. read more

I recently got married this past August at PJ's and it was absolutely incredible! I am so happy I was able to find this place because it fit mine and my husband's personality so well. Dana was so wonderfully helpful throughout the entire process. She was so professional and patient with all the questions I had, and I had a lot! When we first visited PJ's it was in January and covered in snow but I could still picture how beautiful a wedding would be there. When we visited the second time it was for our menu tasting. It was important to me that I find a place that could have vegan options for me and PJ's definitely delivered. If I had requested it, they would have made the entire menu vegan but I opted for vegetarian with vegan options and the food was delicious! We got so many compliments that the food was not only delicious but also pleasantly unique for a wedding. We had a buffet style of enchiladas with cilantro rice, pesto pasta with vegetables and truffle potatoes, and the best beet salad I will ever eat. Even people who don't typically eat beets enjoyed this salad! The chef and staff did an amazing job! Everything was so well organized and put together exactly how we wanted. If you're thinking about getting married or even just dining in Truckee, PJ's is absolutely worth checking out. We could not have picked a better venue if we had to do this all over again. The food is excellent and PJs has a perfect casual atmosphere for friends and family with a fun Tuesday summer series filled with live music, good eats and good company. We visited PJ's recently to take advantage of the summer concert series, which is a great, family friendly event. Bring your chairs and picnic blanket and snag a place on the grass, or call ahead to reserve a table to enjoy the show. You are not allowed to bring in outside food, but they have 2 menus, one for those seated at one of the tables (either indoor or out) and another for those on the lawn. We showed up about 10 minutes before the music started and were pleased to find there was still plenty of lawn real estate available. I went to peruse the menu for the lawn area and they offered a chicken sandwich, a burger, a hot dog or a veggie wrap, plus wine and beer. You place your order at the outdoor bar, then pick it up about 10 minutes later. I asked if they had a kids menu, because none of the items were really suitable for my almost 2 year old and the Chef just happened to be standing within earshot. He said "we love kids, we will make whatever you want!". He told me to just come find him whenever I was ready to order. He was so nice, he asked exactly how my daughter liked her food, if things could be touching etc. He made mac and cheese special for her, with cubed chicken, cubed squash and peas, and had it all in separate little containers so there was no issue with food touching. He even brought it to us out on the lawn personally. What amazing service, he absolutely made my night! read more

This is hands down the best view in Truckee. Unfortunately today is the last day that the are open for the season. They open back up in May 2020. After new ownership, menu was a little small but it is plentiful now. The trout is incredible. I love the wasabi tacos too. PJ's is under new ownership this year. It was our favorite restaurant the past several years so we could not wait to return. OMG........there are 5 items on the lunch menu. A $16 hamburger, a hot dog, a salad that was so bland I didn't even finish it. A vegetarian wrap, and one other item. There were 3 adults and one 5 yr old. No alcohol and our lunch bill was $92 plus tip; came out over $100 and it was awful. We are so incredibly sad to see this happening to PJ's. Truckee's favorite, not so secret , restaurant! I hope management listens to the great servers at PJ's and figures out that they are blowing it. Read the past reviews on Yelp. 2018.....mostly 5 star reviews. 2019.....mostly 1 star reviews. Ambience is lovely on a comfortable patio with beautiful views. Food is inconsistent at best, sometimes quite good (enough to draw us back), but this last time it was not good at all. But the real issue is the 22% tip included in the bill and calculated both on food and drink (for a party of 4). Tips are discretionary and should be that way, not a way to falsely increase prices. And all issues (above + dessert that never came and out of decaf coffee) summed up to irkingly unpleasant memories of the evening. read more

PJ's is an all around A-OK place. You've got a nice view from inside or out (though outside does come with many flies/bees). The menu is pretty extensive so everyone will be able to find something to eat. They have decent beers on tap and the bar is pretty good too. Their margarita is good. We usually have good service when we come to PJ's for lunch but the best thing about PJ's is you don't have to drive to downtown Truckee which is just so crowded. read more

Reading these past reviews infuriates me, especially when I know for a fact that most, if not all of them, are members who own six million dollar homes down the street who, if starving, couldn't prepare a meal for themselves but have the nerve to publicly loathe about how they miss their favorite pastrami reuben or "casar" salad with salmon. Stay at home, we don'y enjoy dining around you. Yelp reviews don't count unless you provide sound arguments against the food, service, ambiance, etc. Bitching about what you miss without providing feedback on the current food means nothing more than the undeniable fact that change scares you. Again, stay at home, or hire a chef, and remember, you can't buy class. On a lighter note, my girlfriend and I dine here at least twice a week. What a pleasure it is. We don't dress in "golf attire." She has dreadlocks, and I often wear board shorts with stupid t shirts. Cale has been our server multiple times, always with excellent candor and honest suggestions. Ashley and Brian have stopped by our table several times to say hello and ask how we're enjoying ourselves. I feel it's because we're seemingly approachable and not uptight assholes waiting for them to drop the ball. The menu is extremely well laid out, with offerings for all dietary "issues" one might have. We love the mushrooms, truly, they are incredible. In a town that just cant seem to resist the urge to reinvent the taco, PJ's has crafted a generous amount of fresh halibut in a simple, non-oily tortilla that are delicious and summery. All the salads have been incredible- lightly dressed, with modest amounts of cheese and nuts. What a salad should be- refreshing. The chicken dish has to be the best I've ever had. Crispy thighs and wings with light but fluffy polenta with soy mushrooms, we get this every time. And the presentation is fantastic. Last night we tried the new trout and halibut with pineapple butter, the chicken, mushrooms and two glasses of wine. We were out the door at $108. Try doing that at Moody's or Cottonwood or anywhere else. We loved it and sat right on the greens. In closing, my only complaint is that PJ's closes for winter. Where will we go then? To chef, and staff alike, I beg of you, don't listen to these rich assholes.
