I had a few problems and was concerned enough to see my doctor for a referral. I want to be sure I remain mobile. There were several choices and I picked this location at random. I was so pleased I did. I've gone to PT before for balance. None of them compare to the treatments I have had here. I have seen 3 different people and they were all excellent. 3/30/26: DO NOT go to Physical Therapy Innovations in El Cerrito. Extremely rushed & distracted staff, extremely hot & stuffy air, seriously unsanitary bathroom like a truck stop. The intake appt was about 10 or 15 mins & $150 out of pocket. Avoid. This is a slop shop that will overcharge & give only the very minimum. My intake appt was between 10 & 15 mins & rushed, with a very distracted staff. I do not feel that this was nearly enough time to learn about my injury, or show me how to do any exercises, or do any lifestyle PT coaching of any kind. The PT told me to do 2 exercises I was already doing. This was inadequate medical care. All of the staff were polite, friendly & professional. But rushed & distracted. My guess is that the issue was not the staff, but with the apparently intense schedule & metrics required by the business owner. The owner is promoting his 21+ adult content graphic novel(!!) & singing career in the waiting area. The bathroom was filthy with mystery fluid on the toilet seat, on the floor around the toilet, & on the sink & on the floor around the sink. Trampled used tissue paper on the floor & other trash scattered around. The trash can itself was very wet & the lid stuck shut so people were just throwing things on the floor. Because tissues were trampled down flat & fluids were on the floor, clearly it had not been cleaned or checked in substantial time. Like a truck stop restroom. I should have taken photos of it in this condition, but I REALLY had to use the facilities so I grabbed a can of Lysol that was laying on the ground & I sprayed the toilet down with Lysol & I threw away some of the trash on the floor. The entire facility had extremely hot & stuffy & muggy air. No ventilation in sight. The humidity of a nightclub, like lots of people breathing into an enclosed space. Unclean air & total lack of ventilation is how airborne disease spreads, & how airborne pathogens like covid spread. Stuffy to the point that almost everyone including staff had wet hair & wet shirts sticking to them from sweat. I tested myself for covid after the appt every other day for a week, & thankfully I didn't catch covid there, but I would not have been surprised if I had. Very crowded & very noisy group exercise room. No masks on anyone. After the appt I talked to 3 people in the neighborhood & they'd been there, & both said their appts were never over 15 mins & neither of them were satisfied with the medical treatment they had received. One of them only went to 2 appts then changed to a new PT because of bad service. Both of these people paid cash out of pocket because this place didn't take their insurance. One of them saw that they billed her insurance $500 for the 10 min appt, & the insurance would not pay it. She was under the impression that her insurance would pay it eventually, but she was stuck with the bill. This place didn't take my insurance either. Apparently many people in the neighborhood know this place is no good, & I wish I had asked around before scheduling there & giving them $150 cash. Avoid this place! Highly distracted & rushed staff do 10 to 15 min appts & charge $500 for it, they don't take insurance, seriously stuffy air & bad ventilation, very unsanitary bathroom. I'd like to save other people from having negative experiences at this place - every other PT I have ever been has been so much better than this place. RUN! 4/26 UPDATE: I stand by everything in my review. All staff were polite, friendly, professional, efficient & knowledgeable. My appt was less than 15 mins. I checked the time. The 4 other people I spoke to also said that appts were never more than 15 mins. This is not enough time. I will ask my neighbors to add their reviews so there are similar comments from more people. Again, all appts were consistently less than 15 mins for all 4 of us. My neighbor confirmed that her insurance was billed $500 for 1 appt. The poster in the waiting area promotes Allen Ling's graphic novel company, including a QR code to his website. See the graphic novel poster. This QR links to an "age restricted content" page requiring a box to confirm they are of age to access "information of an adult nature & subject matter, which might depict sexual activity & erotic art." The QR in the poster worked while I was in the waiting area, & when I added this review. Today the QR doesn't work to his website gen7comics.com The facility was very hot & stuffy, above 68-70 degrees. Most people had wet hair & wet shirts from sweat. It was much hotter inside the building than outside. The CO2 ppm reading was above 900, which is close to unsafe air, indicating a high level of recently exhaled air (~1.33%). That means people are breathing air that was recently in someone else's lungs. HVAC experts & the CDC recommend 800 ppm or less. read more

Their business practices are disrespectful of patients. When I signed up for February membership in their aquatic physical therapy program (where you pay by the month and can come as often as you would like), they neglected to inform me that the pool would be closed for a week for regularly scheduled maintenance. In years past, they would prorate the cost when the pool was closed for a week for maintenance, but they decided not to prorate this year, and they did not inform any patients of this change in policy until after the fact. I waited to leave this review after going to a different Physical Therapy provider to make sure my experience of PTI was fair. I've been to physical therapy a number of times over the years and know what good physical therapy looks like. My impression of the evaluation at PTI was that it was not at all thorough. I was underwhelmed. The person evaluating me seemed unhappy and I felt like a number, not a person in pain. Then I had two treatments by someone else, which I thought were also minimal. So I stopped going. I did some research and asked my doctor for a new referral to another PT provider. The new place was vastly more thorough and detailed in the evaluation, treatment and explaining to me what was going on. I do not recommend PTI. read more

I just started a new PT RX at physical Therapy Innovations. I can't imagine a better physical therapy clinic. Every therapist who has treated me there was not only very effective, but a good listener and sensitive to my issues and condition. I can't recommend these therapists highly enough. As an extra bonus if you are a patient, you can also use their weights and aerobic equipment. I usually arrive early and do about 20 minutes of cardio before my appointment. They coordinate well with your referring physician. Don't let the fact that they're in El Cerrito put you off if you live in Albany or Berkeley or north of El Cerrito. We live in North Berkeley and it's about an 11 or 12 minute easy drive. They are just off Central and San Pablo. I usually wait until my appointment to head to Costco to fill my gas tank, which is just minutes down Central Avenue. Notably, unlike a lot of physical therapist these days, they actually give you physical therapy appropriate to your needs. I've heard about these therapist that charge who knows what for you to come in and then be told to do exercises. They supplement their hands on Therapy with appropriate exercises instead that you can do it on your own time. When I encounter such great care, I feel compelled to give a thorough and glowing review. read more

I was hesitant before calling this place because of all the negative reviews. But this is so close to my home so I was like ok let me try. After a few weeks of going to this place, I decided to stop. They punished me for missing an appointment for the first time. They don't understand that people have a life and things happen... I understand if someone misses s/he appointment 2-3 times then yes, charge them for no show. But it was too much for me to handle (disgusted) with this kind of non-sense business greed mentality. So I paid the fee and told them to cancel the rest of my appointments. I was planning to go there for at least 6 months (twice/week) for my post-surgery PT and other issues. So yeah, they wanted my cash for a first-time no-show and disregard the rest of the $$$ they can make... I'll drive a little further to my old PT place. The bottom line - this place sucks and stupid. It's true. Just read all the reviews on the rates. $250 per 30 minute appointment. They don't make longer appointments to keep you coming because you barely get through anything substantial in an appointment. I paid out of pocket $150 on my appointment day because that's what they said when you don't go through insurance but the want the $250 they would typically get from insurance so I got an invoice for "service" for $100. I can't say enough about Physical Therapy Innovation!! I live with systemic pain throughout my right leg in addition to my right arm!. This has brought me to a point where quality of life issues are compromised and spiritually draining! I have been coming to Physical Therapy Innovations off and on for a couple of years at least. I'm happy to report that without them my life would be debilitating and painful to say the least. Presently, I work with two talented and remarkable therapists. Rosie and Jeremiah are gifted and beyond reproach. My rehabilitation with Jeremiah who works on my leg has been filled with relief and he's always full of suggestions to go by on my own!! We're working towards a goal oriented approach. My pain is chronic and always a constant! Thanks Jeremiah... because of your dedication to your patients I for one am grateful!! These people have no morals they have a collection company harassing me for missed appointments when I called the 24 hours in advance. They are greedy corporate in practice. The facility is old unsafe with lots of stairs and different floors levels. They rush you in and out and don't give you time for icing or heat before or after treatment cuz they want you out your treatment end up being 20 minutes tops!! This place is a nursing home type facility. Go elsewhere there is a great PT facility in Albany in the strip mall near Roundtable pizza. It's bright sunny and the therapist take there time with you and aren't on a crazy tight time clock. read more

This place is a dump. Picture a junkyard where stuff is pushed aside and space is made for some basic PT equipment - kind of like garages made into home gyms. In fact, the parking lot is indeed the waiting room and from the layout of the place, that likely was the case before the pandemic as well. I chose this place because it was listed originally as located at the very modern and clean and well ventilated et al aquatic center near me. As it turned out, they apparently either moved from there or changed hands or something and moved into this present junkheap location in El Cerrito. The place was dirty, spelling and data entry errors were in evidence (including ones that suggested privacy breaches), people were asked to state private information aloud (risking yet more privacy breaching), and the whole vibe was less than professional. Some basic info on handouts I was given was straight up incorrect (I am talking physiology and science, folks), therapists prescribing treatment failed to give clear cut instructions, and so much more. The building is dilapidated (debris and old completely unrelated junk is sort of stuffed away in dusty dirt encrusted corners everywhere. One gets the impression that equipment purchased somehow finds a home wherever someone dumped or dropped it and often next to same is some strange trash from another type of business entirely. The 'story' I conjured up from looking around suggested this may be property some rich family had (like a restaurant) and 'gave' to a kid to 'play' with an idea of starting a business (like a parent with money and property they refuse to donate giving it instead to their sports obsessed kid to try and make a 'go' at using their education to run their own business). That's the 'vibe' I got (aka - spoiled kid, rich parents, et al). Even here on Yelp it appears as if PT is or was an 'add on' to basically make some hack-y nutrition and supplement scam into something more viable (and 'billable'). The 2 therapists I did see seemed adequately competent but not particularly skilled at listening, evaluating, etc. Physical therapists are state licensed providers and are not magicians and conjurers. The magical results exalted by some reviewers here sound like people just unfamiliar with the science and professional practice of physical therapy. The fact that the owner operator(s) could not even take the time to get rid of the unrelated weird junk laying around or just clean the place up for god's sake - I mean some of the make shift ventilation hacks and whatnot are shocking - is astounding. I think this place just ended up getting certified only based on where it was before it moved from the quite nice and modern aquatic center where it was originally listed on the list of places I originally received from my MDs. Honestly, this place is such a dump, it deserves a story for just that. I strongly advise folks truly go elsewhere for actual real physical therapy. I would not even want to venture into using any sort of toilet or bathroom in this place (an outhouse might be a better bet) -- that is how dicey this facility is. If you're looking for a hot mess dressed up as something a health insurance company might be convinced to pay for, this is your kind of place but come dressed in your finest hazmat suit and definitely take a shower when you get back home. read more

I am so thoroughly impressed with the 3 different Therapists I've seen at PTI. I have a main Therapist, but I've seen two others because of circumstances. I was prescribed both pool therapy and in office visits. I thought my hip was going out but it seemed weird that the only time it really hurt was while lying down. I was told that it was probably my back and we did some moving tests to see what was going on. Long story short, it's not my hip (YEA!), it is my back. A small muscle that attaches from the bottom of the last rib to the top of the hip. It's under layers of muscle which means some isolated exercises, heat and massage are going to be necessary to relax that darn thing. That darn thing's name is Quadratus lumborum. Don't ever get it angry. My Therapist showed me the exact location on an app on his phone and emailed me the picture so I can share with family and friends. It's been 3 weeks of 2X a week and I'm starting to feel a little relief. But I know there's a long way to go. I'm a firm believer in PT over surgery. Or any other procedure that is invasive. Front office staff have always been super helpful in scheduling and that's in person or on the phone. All the Therapists that I've dealt with have been super professional and kind. If I need PT in the future, I'm going to request PTI. Parking is tough. It's in a residential neighborhood, so get there early if you need to circle the block a couple of times. read more

Money grubbers. They charge $150 for a half-hour session, $250 for an hour-long session. On top of that they'll charge a $25 billing fee if you are unable to pay on the day of service, $75 if you cancel an appointment less than 24 hours in advance, $50 to release medical records to the patient and $75 to release medical records to another party. "These fees are nonnegotiable," they generously inform you in their contract. Greedy and heartless. Much worse than any health care provider I've encountered. read more

This place is a scam. They book you for a half hour but what they don't tell you is that their minimum charge is for 1 hour. So they were only giving me 30 mins of treatment and charging my insurance for an hour. And they spend 20 mins talking and printing off exercises to take home and only spend a few mins doing actual body work. The therapists were good. However you have to walk up dangerous stairs for some treatments. They are marked red with sloppy tape or something. And there's another step up into the care room. THIS IS ABSURB! Treating people that have mobility issues subjecting them to this obstacle is just plain neglect! I had a bad case of knee tendinitis. They found out what was wrong right away and gave me therapy to bring me back to normal. The front office staff were always friendly and the check in process was always so smooth and painless. I stand by my prior assessment of an excellent professional staff of physical therapists. The clinic also is well equipped with up to date equipment. PTI's aquatic program is excellent and affordable on an independent basis upon reaching your approved sessions paid by your insurance. That said, after a year and a half of being a PTI patient, I have learned with high levels of frustration that the office administration overall as well as billing personnel are quite deficient. There is a lack of professionalism among the reception and appointment personnel. I would even go as far as stating that the office staff is incompetent. They lose Important documents such as prescription for services, payments and lack basic office public relations skills. The office administration department is in need of in-sevice training by office management professionals. It feels as if the executive director is missing a key component of the need for competent and well trained office personnel. I am a life-long consumer of physical therapy due to chronic medical conditions and have experienced many physical therapy clinics over a 40 year period. And although I think the physical therapists are excellent at PTI, but the level of incompetence and continued mismanagement with office staff has made me decide to go to another physical therapy clinic with future prescriptions for services. I will continue membership in their excellent independent aquatic program, however. Writing this negative review was not easy for me as I do not want the public to think that the actual medical professionals (the licensed physical therapists) are anything but excellent. read more

My name is Ernesto, I initially called on 8/12/21 @ 2:14pm. I'm giving this review a 1 star, because I wasn't even given the chance to make an appointment with the PT. I've been having stress on the knee and other parts of my leg from exercise and was given a referral to this PT by my doctor. When I called, the lady on the phone took my information (name, address, phone, insurance) but their was an issue with the insurance that still needed to be resolved. The lady on the phone stated that she would give me a call back within the next hour or so with an update for an appointment and clarification on the insurance. I did not receive a call that day or the next, now its the weekend, and I have to wait until Monday to find a new PT. Me having issues with my knee and leg is no joke to me, I need to be treated by a PT. I will not be coming to this office, and will be looking for and office that treats their patients with respect. read more

This place is terrible. Not the therapists--they are fine-- but the billing dept and management are horrible. I went to several therapy sessions and I was then told by the front desk that they would no longer take my insurance--Blue Cross. "OK," I said "So please cancel any further appointments until I can talk to my insurance." OK, they said. I didn't return and then a month later I got a bill of $75.00 for "a no show." I immediately called them (Billing) and explained that all my appointments were to be canceled per my request because of the insurance situation. They didn't deny what I said but claimed their manager "Miriam" had called me and left a message to say my insurance was now "Ok." I explained that I never got the message and I never called to reset my appointments so they had no authority to bill me for a "No-Show." They ignored what I said and they have kept sending me this bill (3)...TOTAL HARASSMENT! So my advice is--go somewhere else! read more

My insurance covered only four PT sessions, but PT Innovations in Oakland used those sessions efficiently to teach me exercises to relieve my back pain. After only four sessions, I didn't know if my back was getting any better or not. Frankly, I thought I would need more than PT. But now, after about two months of daily exercises, my back is getting much better. They have private treatment rooms, rather than the open area at the previous place I had gone to. The reasons for not five stars: I went there thinking that they offered acupuncture, but upon arrival found out that they dropped that service. Also, the young therapist who worked on me, left the job after three sessions to go back to school. I would have liked to have been told of that at the onset. However, Doug, who gave me my last session, was great and really helped explain what was going on with my back. He is a seasoned pro and his advice was spot on! read more

SHOULD AND COULD BE BETTER! Medicare might be interested to check on PTI fulfilling its contractual responsibilities. The wonderful professional pool therapists are overloaded (too many patients per session) and they must depend on unpaid volunteers (who are not required to always show up). I imagine that the profit motive rules management. This possibly explains why initially I was steered away from "Pool sessions" to "Office sessions" until my physician complained and I was re-instated to water therapy. Dressing rooms and shower rooms are not as clean as they should be, and maintenance of plumb ing equipment is minimal (broken showers, flooding etc). The therapy staff is EXCELLENT. I'm honestly shocked at the low rating for PTI, because I had nothing but good experiences there. I attended PT sessions at both their El Cerrito and Oakland locations, but I preferred El Cerrito, as the location was larger & had more equipment. The location is also very close to BART, which I found very convenient. I had little interaction with the office staff, as my insurance covered everything, but my interactions with the physical therapists themselves were great. I was seeking help with a pinched nerve in the back of my neck, and they helped me tremendously. That said, I must point out that I had little interaction with a licensed physical therapist, as I believe there was only one on staff during my time there. I saw him only once, for my initial consultation, and I was not tremendously fond of him, as he seemed a bit distant & I felt a bit like a number being processed as efficiently as possible. The rest of the PTI staff I worked with were students who are studying to become licensed, and I found them to be very attentive, friendly, and highly concerned with my personal issues. Two of the student physical therapists I worked with were amazing. They gave me exercises that addressed my specific issues which helped me tremendously. They patiently helped me to make sure that I was doing the movements with correct form, both modeling them and watching me to make sure that I understood. Sadly, both of these students moved on during the course of my treatment, and so I ended up working with 3 different therapists (in addition to the licensed guy I saw on my first visit). The third student I worked with seemed to be *extremely* inexperienced. He was very nice & all, but I got the feeling that I sort of needed to teach him what I had learned from the previous people I had worked with, so I didn't get a lot out of my last few appointments. Most of my therapy relied on me doing exercises independently at home, but the physical therapists I worked with in each of my sessions also provided massage therapy (using some sort of machine) and discussed my progress in order to customize my exercises as my situation changed. I would happily return to PTI if I'm unfortunate enough to have a need in the future. read more

This is my second go around with PTI. the first time I dealt with the owner himself Allen and another guy, who had been there awhile. They both were knowledgable and I feel like I was helped. This time I have Danielle and she is amazing. She listens, she talks and she gives good advice on my current situation. My problem is the front office staff. They are not very nice, rude even on certain occasions. I have to be there doing nothing for an hour while on an h-wave machine and even tho when you log onto a device such as your computer there is an option for PTIguest the staff refused to allow me internet access for the hour I am there with nothing to do. Who doesn't have internet. It does feel like a money mill, the owner is semi retired and they are cranking people in and out of there. I am all for people getting paid for services rendered, I work in a service industry, but who doesn't have internet these days for people forced to be there with nothing to do for an hour or more? Just be nice about it. Just avoid the office staff, the PT's I have dealt with are good. read more

I have unfortunate experience at this place. After a car accident, I was recommended to have treatments at PTI. I have endured about 5-7 sessions and mostly with interns. One of the interns seemed to care enough and did work on the pain of my lower back and showed me the exercise that actually helped alleviate my pain but the others were more Q & A focus. I ended up not goving to this place since I found rushing to their place after work and got rather superficial treatments was not worth it. I hope I was not too demanding read more

I came here a while ago because I had horrible back problems. After a quick consultation with my doctor, I was able to come here for eight sessions. No trouble from my insurance company (BlueShield). I usually got Brian for my PT sessions, who is no longer working here, but their other PT's have years or decades of experience, clearly know what they're doing, and are so fun to talk to! Today, I have zero back problems, even though I have a desk job and regularly deadlift more than my bodyweight. I am SO surprised that this place has bad reviews. Just FYI, this clinic has been here for decades, and has helped nearly every one in the El Cerrito AND Albany communities, including myself. Not that I'm dismissing everyone who's had a bad experience here, but PTI is far from a two-star business. If you don't believe me, then walk over to their clinic, and take a look inside. Their walls are covered with outstanding hand-written reviews from athletes, including celebs. Or you can scroll down and click on "not recommended reviews" to read any of the 46 hidden reviews. You'll be seeing stars... four-stars, that is! Yes, I did have a PT-in-training a few times, and this is the reason why I wouldn't give them 5 stars. Apparently all of their PT's are too busy to oversee the students while they're in session. I feel like this is not very responsible. On the flip side, the students are getting one hell of an experience doing things on their own... and it's not like they're going to make things worse. It's just not as effective as when you get one of PTI's experienced therapists. Oh, did I mention they have an outdoor gym? It's small but pretty snazzy. It has weight machines, cardio machines, dumbbells, bands, balls, and other non-weighted equipment that I have no idea how to use. The unique aspects include natural lighting, outdoor breeze, no judgement (gym-goers are patients trying to recover or stay in shape), and... plants! The owner clearly loves plants... they're everywhere in the clinic too. Definitely give this place a try. You will be pleasantly surprised. read more

This review is long over due, I visit this location years ago. Recommend to me by my insurance. A Six week session I was suppose to complete, the physical therapy quality was very poor the customer service was horrible. I explained to the staff there I rather search someone else for my treatment. They asked why? And I told them I'm not receiving the proper treatment here. I guess they felt some type of way and still kept me scheduled for their treatment. I never showed up unaware I was still scheduled. They charged me for not showing up which is $75. I never received the bill until like a year later, and than that went into collections. Because I was confused and wondering why I was being charged. I tried to work out a type of pay back forgiveness and they told me they couldn't help because they already sent my bill to collection. Highlight: Mistakenly billed months after attending and then the mistaken bill was sent to collections! Complaint also registered with the Better Business Bureau. I went to Physical Therapy Innovations over a few months in 2013. They were ok, but after the first session didn't really help my back issues and I ended up going elsewhere. They quoted me a session price of $30, which they charged me, and I paid, over the course of multiple visits. Months later, after I stopped going there, they sent me a bill for over $400. They claimed they had mis-quoted me the price, each visit, over multiple months. After I called and emailed to complain, I thought they took care of this mistake. However, I recently received a call from a collections agency, so it seems they did not. If you can't trust the person that interacts with your insurance at the front desk, and then sends your mistaken bill to collections years later, you can't trust this business. read more

Totally scammed me... they gave me an appointment for 11am and when I showed up said it was at 10am ...then charged me $75 dollars for an appointment I missed not to my own fault. Oh and a $25 billing charge because it went on over the holidays ... Have fun scamming people... DON'T go there ... read more

Therapists and assistants have all been excellent and provided personal attention and feedback for the full appointment time and good advice for independent work at home or at their facilities. El Cerrito location is a little crowded and improvised, but it's enough and feels comfortable. Staff have all been friendly and helpful. I have not had billing or appointment issues that others have complained about, though I keep my payments current. Parking is limited in their lot and on the street, so I sometimes need to wait or circle. Drivers who provide transportation really shouldn't wait in the lot, taking space for the entire appointment time while patients have to park some distance away. read more

I came back to PTI after a recent car accident - I was rear-ended by an uninsured driver and thankfully I am insured by my own uninsured motorist coverage. They accepted my case on assignment. Everyone who has worked with me has been very helpful, both the therapists and the office staff. Though this has been a long process for me, I feel that I am well on my way to getting my life back again. The staff is aware of the mild traumatic brain injury that I'm suffering from after the crash, and have accomodated the resulting forgetting appointments and difficulty getting my words out with compassion - they have rescheduled me on more than one occasion. I am grateful because sometimes I feel really frustrated by this but they are very supportive. I always feel better when I leave my appointments than when I walked through the front door. I can see gradual improvements in my pain levels, even though sometimes my daily life creates minor setbacks. The staff helps me through those as well. I keep a file of all the exercises I have which really helps if you need to change therapists due to schedule changes. I first came to PTI several years ago after being diagnosed with a pinched nerve in my neck that resulted in severe pain all the way down my arm. My MD initially wanted to send me to a surgeon, but I wanted to try other options first. A friend recommended PTI and I'm really glad they did. The treatments I received enabled me to avoid having an unnecessary surgery. I am very grateful. Keep up the good work! read more
