Very old school climbing gym! I only Boulder so can only comment on that, but the routes were fun and people were kind. I'd never had the chance to climb at a tape hold marked route gym and it definitely took some getting used to, but it was overall a good experience!

Belaying and climbing are a breeze

Been here twice. Amazing experiences both times. Adult and kid friendly. Good for a hang session with friends from work. Affordable. Not too crowded. Great introduction and safety video. Impressive hands on help from the staff.

Fun family activity!!

Summertime in AZ can be challenging when it comes to finding indoor family friendly activities... Enter Phoenix Rock Gym for one healthy, adventurous option. My husband (shout-out to you, Jared), came up with the idea to take my daughter here on a summertime Saturday and they had so much fun that my son and I joined them the following week. Phoenix Rock Gym is a bit "older school" than some of the newer rock climbing, ninja warrior, and trampoline gym options you'll find around the Valley. That being said, the staff are knowledgeable and mostly friendly, and they provide a one stop fun shop for everyone in the family... For $20 per person including gear, (less for kids 5 and under), you can keep busy with climbing, bouldering, and just watching others... it's great exercise too! Note: you do need a "buddy" to belay you, so if you have a little one, it's probably best to have a 1:1 adult to kid ratio. You also should plan on watching a video and signing your life away on a waiver before getting started. Once that's done, adventure awaits! According to the PRG website, the routes are changed frequently so you'll always find something new to test your skills. Enjoy!

Going over safety. Safety first.

They have you watch a video, and then a coach helps you. Very thorough and helpful. No rushing. Making sure you understand and learn properly and SAFETY. Highly recommend. I'll be back.

I wish I could give this place 7 stars, it was perfect for us! I took my 5 year old kid to this indoor rock gym and she absolutely loved it! There was a good variation of really easy climbs she could do and lots of very hard ones for more experienced ones. I really loved the community vibe of the place; there was a "looking for a partner" board as well as lots of climbing groups and a Meetup you can join if you want to take your climbing skills out into the wild. The first-time safety briefing was quick and efficient. I'd say from walking in the door to actively climbing was about half an hour. Ben did a great job explaining everything clearly and both staff members seems to actually enjoy working there. Anytime I had a question, one was within talking distance to help me out. We got in today with the Pogo Pass but we honestly have to come back so we'll definitely be looking into memberships since my daughter loved is so much!

Jamie is the best lead belay teacher! If you're planning to climb inside or outside to get in touch with this amazing woman she will teach you all the best tricks!

Get ready for your forearms to be sore. The Phoenix Rock Gym, located near the ASU campus in Tempe, is a climber's paradise. I'll walk through some of the details for beginners and intermediate/advanced and give some info on pricing: Beginners: if this is your first time rock climbing or if you haven't been in a while, you'll need to fill out a liability waiver and watch a short video. The PRG team will get you set up with your harness and shoes and will take you to the introductory wall so that you can practice your belay technique and climbing. Since you will always have someone belay you when you climb, you will need a partner. You'll double check with your partner that they are locked in and ready to belay and you will have your knot checked. Climb up to the monkey face hold (you'll see what I'm talking about) and practice a few times with your partner. After that, the gym is open to you! Intermediate/Advanced: this gym has 56 top ropes from levels 5.6 all the way to 5.14+. You'll see all your favorite obstacles with overhangs, cracks, slants, and most people in the gym are fellow enthusiasts. There is also a 2-level bouldering area, but the bottom level is a better place to practice and perfect your technique. There are also ropes to climb (like in elementary school gym class) if you want to take on that challenge! Pricing: $15 day pass, additional $5 for gear. $60 unlimited month pass, $130 quarterly, $250 semi-annual, $450 annual, and if you plan to live forever, then the $1 million lifetime pass is the way to go!

PRG is the best climbing gym in The Valley. The staff is chill and the routes are great.

Love to rock climb... But the staff at this gym were extremely rude and impatient! Won't be going back here because of them

Ask the Community - Phoenix Rock Gym

How much would it cost to climb for a few hours with friends?

A day pass with gear is $20. If you have your own equipment a day pass is $15. These prices include tax.

Do you have showers?

Nope. Just a hose out back.

I don't have someone to come Climbing with me. Is there a single climbers sign up or employees or anything for people who don't come with a partner?

Hi Kari, Just ask at the front desk. We can usually help you find a partner. Thanks Dief

The atmosphere has a near-perfect mix of old-school and high-end anabolic/clean equipment. If you want to compete and be engulfed entirely in the bodybuilding environment, then 100% spend the $69 to get a membership. They also occasionally freeze adding new members, so as to avoid the gym ever feeling too busy (maintaining the "private gym" experience and community), which is amazing, and something I've never seen before. Cons: The price is $69 ($59 if you commit to 3 months, or $49 if you commit to 6 months) per month, which is quite the sum. There is also no two arm cable machine, save the large cable machine in the middle. This makes some sense, because this is supposed to be very old school bodybuilding-esc, so it's definitely something that I wouldn't necessarily say is a bad thing, but it's important to consider if you can't see yourself working out without that. Overall, if you can get past the price and want perhaps the best gym vibe around, this is absolutely 100% the place you HAVE to go to. The community is amazing so positive as well. I would love to compete one day, but I'm currently not in a position to afford that price, so I won't be going here beyond my three day free pass for the time being. If you can afford it, however, definitely don't miss out on this opportunity. It's something I'm not sure you can find anywhere else.

We were visiting Tempe and wanted to squeeze in a workout so found this place on Yelp. It was super easy to sign up and only $15 for a drop in which I think is on the lower end of most gyms whether it's spin, yoga, or training. The instructor was very welcoming and made us feel comfortable as newbies. Let's be honest no one likes being in an unfamiliar class unsure of where to stand or what to expect alongside a bunch of regulars. The class was tough -- but in a good way. Their leg day was a true leg day, I don't think I've ever done so many squats (in various forms of course). My legs are absolute jello. As with any interval class you really can go at your own pace though it's hard to not feel motivated to push yourself with the trainer walking around encouraging you. I like that they start exactly on time even if the entire class is present just in case there are late stragglers. The space is HUGE - you can fit tons of people in there without it feeling congested or as if you're stepping on someone's toes. It's clean with lots of equipment options so you're not fighting over weights. The playlist was great (though wouldn't mind it louder to drown out the "omg this hurts when is it going to end" thoughts passing through my head haha) They have a smoothie and açaí shop connected to the gym which I wish we could've tried but we're on our way to brunch. If I lived here that would be heaven and so convenient to wrap my workout with a protein shake onsite.

Each trainer is really focused on making sure you get the most from your workout by correcting your form and keeping you motivated during class. They're also always happy to provide you with alternative exercises if you have an injury or simply aren't coordinated enough to do something. I've also noticed that they all really try to remember your face and name- which holds you accountable when you skip a day or two! If you're the kind of person who needs a lot of positive reinforcement, take a class from Aurora, Bobby, or Nick- they'll be your biggest cheerleaders throughout class! If you're looking to improve your form and performance I highly recommend taking a class from Dean on Tues/Weds/Thurs evening- he's not shy about telling you what you could be doing differently to achieve maximum results. Last but definitely not least if you love trainers who are bubbly and energized- Kalyn is your girl! She always makes you feel welcome and keeps you energized. So, SO glad to have found this location of TruHit!
