Great climbing gym and liked that on a weeknight, they were pretty empty. This is a bouldering gym with an autobelay area for climbers. I came on a special night with women climbers and admission was just $10, nice deal! I also rented a harness and that was $4. They have a pretty good long bouldering wall and I enjoyed bouldering here. I liked also that it wasn't jam packed with people either! Had space to really boulder and enjoy the climb. I did try out the auto belay but I've never really enjoyed climbing much, but it was good. Id definitely come back here and def on a women's night to take advantage of a pretty good deal! read more

I climb here occasionally for ladies night - $10 day pass on Wednesdays - which is amazing! While the gym is smaller, they set so densely that there are still a lot of routes. They have a wall of autobelays and a wall of bouldering as well as a small fitness area. The front desk staff are always friendly. read more

I sadly now have my membership at a different locally owned gym after moving way up north for work, but still visit Focus for an occasional day pass. It's a smaller gym, but they use the space incredibly well, and they don't skimp on the air conditioning like most other gyms. The pads are extremely thick and squishy, which makes the tall boulders a joy to flail on. Their auto-belay wall is the perfect training wall, set densely with a wide variety of grades and thoughtful sequences. read more

Decent place, but buyer beware on their cancellation policy for monthly memberships. They take a hard and unforgiving line on that policy, even with long-time climbers. We'd emailed them to request a cancellation in December. They debited our card again in January. We called that same day to find out what happened and why they hadn't cancelled it. They said cancellation had to happen either (1) in person or (2) using a form we didn't know about. Looking back in my email today, I did find a cancellation form link about two-weeks after my cancellation request, right during the holidays. After a conversation with the owner on the phone, he wouldn't refund. I felt like their customer service could have been more forgiving, especially with all the money we've spent with them throughout the years. I'm disappointed. Fun place to go for a first or second date. They have walls you climb and then release yourself and jump off onto large, thick mats. It is a huge adrenaline rush every time you get off a wall. Fun time to have with friends. read more

Well, I came here for the first time and I loved it! The staff were nice and they show you the gym when you come in for the first time. There is a climbing team for the kids and teens. To add on, there is a workout area and the climbs are fun and amazing. I highly recommend this place. read more

I'm traveling through town and wanted a temporary membership while I'm here. Focus totally met my needs and even had a special where I could show off my skills and get some free merch. Joe (the ower) is super knowledgeable and helpful, he even gave me some pointers for increasing my finger strength. Tanner did an awesome orientation, in depth but not overdone. The gym is a good size and offers both bouldering options and auto belays of varying difficulty. It was never packed when I went so I didn't have to wait to climb and I was able to traverse all around on the boulders without being in anyone's way. Highly recommend this gym read more

This is only my second climbing gym experience, so take it with a grain of salt, but I would recommend this one. While it's very much on the smaller side, people are very courteous and share the walls. You might have to wait on the side at times, though. The staff is watchful and very safe. They give a quick introduction to new users and make sure you know how to fall and use the equipment. And you can stay and climb for as long as you want. It's such a great activity for people of all ages. I saw everyone from tweens to college kids to people in their fifties. As for the routes, they are a bit of a hit-or-miss, as some felt natural and challenging, while others were awkward and uncomfortable. They also have autobelays, and some climbers may dislike that (I didn't, but my boyfriend does). Day passes are a bit pricey ($27, including shoes and harness), but memberships for the year seem worthwhile if you get their deals on Black Friday. read more

Climb that goddamn mountain." - Jack Kerouac After losing 100 pounds, I vowed to try things outside of my comfort zone. I need to stop being apprehensive, scared and doubtful. I need to take more chances, be more courageous, take the shot. After all, you miss 100% of the shots you never take, as they say. Whoever "they" are. A coworker was my secret Santa, and got me a gift certificate for Focus Climbing Center. So when I hit that goal, I decided that I was doing it! I'm afraid of heights, so let's start there. The Focus website is pretty antiquated, but it had rates and information available, and I was also able to fill out their waiver online. The center is easy to find, located in an industrial park off Dobson and Broadway. The front desk guy was so nice. I'm sorry that I forget what his name was. The entry process was efficient, and he took me back for a brief orientation. I learned how to fall safely, how to use the carabiners and belay system, and what the color and sticker number paths mean. I rented the shoes and harness, which they give a discount if you do the day pass with the equipment. They probably don't have chalk out due to COVID, but I highly recommend it. I had a hard time getting sweaty paws, and nobody mentioned chalk. They probably have it up front, but I have no idea. After my orientation, I was off to the races. Ok, not really. I was slow and scared. I chose the vertical wall with the belay first. It took a few tries, but I got the hang of it, and shed my fears rather quickly. I didn't make it to the top, but that's for another day! The gym is small, with one completely vertical belay wall, and one vertical bouldering wall. There was a group of guys that stayed on the bouldering wall the whole time, and I wasn't comfortable with the other diagonal and rock-esque (is that the right description or maybe contorted?) walls. There was a group at the far end too, where there was a small bouldering wall that was pretty vertical. So I did that a few times while the group took a break. Then there was a guy who was doing every belay wall, so I waited for him to move to another wall before trying again. I just feel like I did more waiting than climbing, because I'm new and not yet comfortable with diagonal walls. But that's on me. I stayed about an hour and a half. As I turned in my gear, they reminded me that it's a day pass, so I could come back any time during the day. I'll add that they have great hours. 10-10 on weekdays and 10-7 on weekends. Give Focus a shot. ESPECIALLY if you want to try something new and outside your comfort zone. Both adults and kids will have a fun and challenging experience! read more

If you are in the Mesa area, you should definitely check out focus climbing Center! It is located near a lot of newer buildings close to the children's hospital and Mekong. It is tucked away, so be sure to follow the instructions via your GPS. There is a good amount of parking, so no need to worry about finding a spot. On Wednesdays, they have ladies night! Starting at 6 PM, it only costs you ladies five dollars to get in. There is an additional fee for equipment, but if you have your own, like me, then you just have to be five dollars. The staff is super friendly! Unlike other gyms where you might have to pay for your orientation, they went through the gym orientation with me free of charge. The main differences at this climbing gym are that it is primarily for bouldering and they have top rope via auto belays. The staff will go over how to properly climb via the bouldering style and how to properly fall. There are specific rules in order to keep everyone safe, so be sure to pay attention carefully! The top rope area, also known to people as rock climbing with a rope, is all set up via auto belays. This means that you don't need a partner to hold the rope and pull out the extra slack as you climb up. Just be sure to listen carefully on how to properly clip and what to expect if you have not used this device before. They also have large buckets around the climbing gym with chalk. This is an amazing and very fortunate perk about this gym! So, if you are looking to get into rock climbing, and you either don't know anybody to climb with or you are wanting to just get some routes done by yourself, this is a great place to do that.Be sure to check out their social media handles for updates on specials and certain deals that they have, such as ladies night. read more

I read through the reviews and asked staff/members their opinions of the business before going there. I was informed that although the owner has climbing experience, he lacks business/customer service experience. This can be witnessed in his lack of professionalism in his responses to these comments. I highly recommend driving an extra 30-45 minutes to climb somewhere else where the egos aren't as sensitive and the atmosphere isn't as political. read more

Focus is such a fun place to climb. My boyfriend is an avid rock climber and has a membership here, and I join him and his friends every once in a while. I love that they have auto-belay devices, which makes it easy to climb on your own. They have a good mix of bouldering and top rope, and their top rope climbs range from easy to pretty technical (~5.6 to 5.13), which means there are options for every skill level. I've loved climbing every time I've been here and always look forward to coming back! read more

This is still hands down the best climbing gym in AZ. The quality of the routes are top notch and the mats are nothing like I've ever seen. I greatly appreciate how serious the owner has taken COVID-19 these past few years. Masks are still required, but for me that's a plus considering how little I go out these days. I especially love climbing here in the summer, it's always nice and cold. I feel bad not writing a review sooner, as I've been climbing here at least 5 years. The rock climbing was ok, could have been better. If you're scared of the virus obviously you don't want to go to rock gym with other touching and all that on the rocks. But for those who aren't scared and are healthy we should be able to climb and have fun with out masks. Some of the employees are very very strict about having you're mask up when the spreading of the virus is happening with the touch. You can't breathe when you are being active and you're body needs oxygen. read more

The Best Bouldering and Decent Rock Climbing Wall in AZ So here is the rundown on focus in my humble honest opinion.... Good music! You cannot beat Focus for the bouldering scene of that is your game... They have a great main area for this and it is definitely the focus at Focus.... The rock climbing/auto belay area is great for beginners or now and then visitors but I cannot rationalize a membership and daily visits... This gym doesn't have a large enough area to really get a me bough variety or any more complex climbs. If the employee only grey area was gone and the wall was extended it would make this place much better. The gym is cleaner than most. The staff is polite and friendly... No military discount... $16 a visit if you bring your own harness and shoes can add up. Bathrooms are 8/10 for clean which is pretty awesome for a rock gym! read more

I've been to every other climbing gym in the valley, and this is the best climbing gym by far. This gym is so good it has ruined other climbing gyms for me. 1- the gym is clean. The bathrooms, the mats, and most importantly, the holds, are clean. It's obvious the holds are cleaned regularly. 2- the problems are fantastic. The setters in this gym are awesome. The problems are all really fun and they are changed regularly. Also, I like that the finish for every single problem is not just the top of the wall like at some other gyms I've been to. 3- the mats in the bouldering area are the best. This is what has ruined other gyms for me. The mat is really thick and soft so you can climb really confidently without worrying about falling. I've never been to another gym with mats this nice. 4- customer service is good. read more

Came here last year and had a shitty experience with the owner when I ended up getting a day pass to climb with my friend. The gym itself is super nice and has a lot of bouldering options. I tried to bargain a little bit for shoes since I was going to buy a long term membership and needed some new shoes, the owner got super intimidating and started acting really degrading towards me. I didn't go back for awhile until a few months later when my friend was doing a competition at Focus and I decided to show up to support him, one of our friends who was also having his first experience at this gym also came to the competition and ended up trying signing up for a membership. Came back to me a few moments after leaving to try and sign up and said this; "That guy who owns this place is a total dick". Don't really think I need to add anything to that, but I do want to say the rest of the staff is fantastic. I don't want to help a business owner who can't handle the basic concept of common courtesy or respect towards customers. I was about to buy your overpriced shoes and a year membership, and you get offended because I asked if you could do a bit better on the shoes when I'm about to give you literally almost $200 for just the membership.... I climbed for a few years and it was my main form of exercise and fun but after an accident I took four years off. My first time back was Focus and I loved it. I see plenty of reviews complaining about too many routes but that's bizarre to me. When I used to climb in flagstaff all I wanted was more or new routes all the time. This gym always has something new to climb and people are super good about straying from your route and taking turns. Bouldering can be frustrating at times, and I feel like most of these bad reviews are just frustrated, unexperienced climbers which is okay. It's just not the gyms fault like they're playing out to be. Only thing I'll slightly agree on is the owner does have some sass but I love a good sass every once in a while so I truly don't care haha. read more

Brought the boys here for a afternoon of entertainment and ended up watching the boys get yelled at for "clapping" the excess chalk (which is a habit ya know) and no they weren't playing and trying to be funny and yet the owner watched a girl do it 3 times almost next to him and he never said anything to her. Hmmmm I would recommend taking the drive to AZ rock gym in Scottsdale . It is way more friendly and family oriented not so cliquey like it is here. They had fun though and spent some energy. Update: still here watching people land from jumping off the wall inappropriately - NOT the way they drilled it in in the beginning of our visit. I wanted to find "my rock gym" so I tried out Phoenix Rock Gym for a while and didn't fall in love. So then I came to Focus. I wanted a gym with bouldering and auto belays and this fit the bill. I am mostly a hiker but I wanted to overcome my fear of heights and help my stress levels of having a medically fragile child, so I signed up! I love the gym. It is laid back and everything I was looking for. I prefer to go during the less crowed times because at night this place is packed. But I think that speaks to what a good gym this is because if it wasn't a good gym, people wouldn't want to go after they got off work. They have various membership offers and I love the free chalk. You can use your own equipment or rent which is always nice. I love how clean the facility is. I also love that you can freeze your membership if you have to travel. My son has a Make A Wish Trip and I am going to be gone for an extended time and I was able to freeze my membership for when we are gone. If you like to boulder, this is your gym. read more

I didn't really have any expectations - my stepson wanted to show his step sister one of his favorite place. The gentleman at the front was super friendly and helpful. I wished I got his name. He showed my daughter the do's and dont's. Made sure she got up and going before leaving us alone. Love that it wasn't crazy busy. The place itself was clean. We were there for almost 3 hours. I was passing through town and stopped at this gym. I am an experienced climber, and I have been to my fair share of gyms all over the country. A brief glance at its website where it advertised "setting the new standards for rock climbing gyms" gave me high expectations. Instead I was greeted with a 20 minute long "orientation" (about 5 times as long as other gyms). The walls were packed with routes, which was great, except for the fact that it was nearly impossible to separate out routes by tape color. I spent so much time searching around for holds on the wall that I wasn't even having fun while climbing. I left after 30 minutes, too frustrated from searching for holds. Focus is a good gym, but it should not advertise itself as a modern "standard-setting" gym if it uses outdated taped routes and old greasy holds. read more

With walls that aren't the greatest for a gym their size, they do have a confusing members only hours schedule. 5pm cut off for non members (and no guest passes unless you want to pay more than $100 for a punch card that pays for a visits ahead). This time cut off makes even less sense when, if you get in sight let before 5, then you can stay till whenever. If you show up at 5:01 (as I did due to some unfortunate traffic on my way to race for the cut off) you are denied with only the option to spend $100+ on a membership or punch card. With grading that does not seem accurate to the routes, and divisive membership hours, this gym doesn't seem welcoming for new or visiting climbers. read more

Routes are challenging and fun, it's a good gym to train and get stronger in. It's primarily a bouldering gym so if you're not satisfied with that then you might consider going elsewhere. The auto-belays are a nice feature, and a good spot to warm up. The space has the best air conditioning in the valley for a climbing gym, a crucial feature during the summer. Staff are friendly and helpful. If you're rude and disrespectful don't expect them to roll out the red carpet for you (duh). Regular members are friendly and often go out on outdoor climbing trips. If you're looking for a place to make some new buds who enjoy the outdoors this is a good place to find them. read more

I lived near and climbed at focus for a few years. It's an excellent place to develop as a climber. The setters keep things fresh with frequent resets, and the routes range from good to excellent. I was always impressed by the little things: chalk being included, how clean the gym is, how much the staff know about climbing, and, most importantly, 2-ply toilet paper in the bathrooms. Keep an eye out for the spotlight problems, they tend to be winners. And even if you don't think you can compete, enter one of the free comps: they are great learning experiences with nothing to lose. read more
