Stop there based on YELP reviews and their marquee even noted they were #1 in Johnstown. Food was awesome, staff was very nice, and the price was very reasonable. Only problem was for whatever reason our order got lost and had to wait almost 40 minutes for our food while everyone who had come in after us were promptly served. It was until we complained that we got our food and then felt rushed as appetizers and dinner served almost on top of each other. When we did get served the food was very tasty. We got a sampler of couple different flavors of wings, hot & the "sticky". They were good but no bleu cheese was offered or served. The jalapeño poppers were good. I had the Reuben sandwich which was as good as any that I've had from delis anywhere and my date enjoyed her Cobb Salad. Except for a few "I'm sorry", there was no effort to compensate for our wait and troubles. Not even comping us our drinks which we're very reasonably priced. We were told we could call on Monday, 2 days later, and they would see what they could. Would I go back, maybe! The next time Im in Johnstown though, I will definitely try another establishment. read more

Fantastic food, chicken balls, several flavors of wings, and pulled pork sandwiches, all phenomenal. Best Cuban sandwich in town to boot! Prices are fair, the building has a cool old Tin ceiling and while decor is a bit older, is extremely clean. read more

This place is nothing fancy like most of Johnstown but the food is good none the less. The meatloaf really impressed me and my husband loved his burger. Decent prices and decent food.. we will be back soon! read more

The Phoenix is one of my favorite places in Johnstown. In fact when we dined there today, it was 9:00pm on a Saturday night. I had started my morning at 4:00am in Buxton, NC and the promise of chicken ball Saturday kept me going. The inside is reminiscent of old hometown bars in the hay day of Johnstown but with a clean modern feel. The food is always amazing. The most amazing pulled pork and the chicken balls are something you will laugh at the name, taste, then fall madly in love with. Dave and Colette the owners are awesome and work super hard. I love that I can get a tonic water with lime as my drink and it's as normal as a soda! Also. The desserts are bombastic! Baileys Irish cream cake will change your life! read more

Poor service and sad chicken balls; their signature dish. Granted it was a Saturday night but they should have been prepared being that it wasn't much different from any other weekend in terms of the amount of business. Our waitress was running both the bar and a couple tables, while there was one other waiter and (who I believe is) the owner walking around socializing. Waited a half hour for a glass of water. All four of us had ordered chicken balls and yet they were more like stuffing balls - no chicken. My husband ordered carrots and ranch to go with his wings which never came. Asked for napkins - never came. Heard the waitress talk to the table next to us. No more wings, no clean glasses. This was all by 7:45 pm. Absolutely deplorable. Use to love this place but because of the lack of preparation and the poor quality of the chicken balls we will not be returning. read more

Great hometown feel, always a nice crowd, and the owner's often make you feel like you're the only guests in the establishment. The price on the food is an amazing deal and cannot be beat. Also a great location with ample parking. My only regret was not coming here earlier! read more

I had long heard the ravings about the Chicken Balls. I'm not often in the West End, but the moment I had the opportunity, I had to try it. The word of mouth didn't do it justice. Eat at the Phoenix at least once a month and have liked almost everything tried. Cuban is excellent, crab bisque very good, chicken ball very good, etc. Bar is aged and dated, but in good shape and clean. 4 star rating given because a wide selection of food and multiple daily selections, good service, pricing is low, and beer cold!! I spent New Years here with a few friends. We ordered wings and Moscow Mule's... It was awesome! The wings were crispy and fresh and smothered in a delicious sauce called the westy. The Moscow Mule's were served in big copper mugs and were made with Tito's Handmade vodka. They were really good also. To top the night off the owners provided complimentary sausages, hotdogs, a vegetable platter, desserts and a glass of champagne to see in the New Year. What more could you ask for?! read more

The Phoenix is more than just a tavern. When you walked in the door it's like coming home, settle in for a wonderful dining experience. I suggest you start with your favorite drink it's not just about a shot and a beer at the Phoenix. Sasha can make any drink you can think of. And I promise you it will be a wow. Next start with soup, every soup is homemade nothing out of a box at the Phoenix. There are at least three entrées each day. By chance they are not quite what you're looking for, which by the way I doubt. Just ask for the menu and I promise you will find a appetizer and entrée that will more then satisfy your appetite. Now that you're ready for dessert ask Dave the owner "what desserts did your wife make tonight." He will proudly tell you as he should about at least four wonderful cakes and pies that she has baked fresh that day. That's the Phoenix-great owners, with outstanding food and drinks. Fabulous! We were looking for some good homemade food, and landed here. The Chicken Ball was SO delicious, as was the Cuban sandwich. Dave was so gracious and attentive. The food is absolutely top notch as far as bar food goes. It's got a home cooked feel. The home-made soups & desserts are hands down the best in town. The atmosphere is casual, and light. A very unique dining experience. My wife and I went there for lunch one day, around 1 pm, the bar area was busy, seemed like a friendly atmosphere, the dining area had only 1 party of 4 seated, We waited at the hostess station for a good 5 minutes as servers and bar personel passed back and forth. We were completely ignored, but figured maybe we misread, and should seat ourselves. We seated ourselves at a table just inside the dining room, very close to the hostess station, so as to be noticed. The waitress continuted to serve, and shortly thereafter check out the party of 4, all the while passing back and forth by our table. We were never greeted, acknowledged, or noticed in any way at all. We continued to sit in the now empty dining room while the party of 4s table was cleared and cleaned, still nothing. Attempts of eye contact proved futile, so after 15 or 20 minutes, we uneventfully got up and left. read more
