Let me start by saying if I had to choose between this place or a busy bbq spot who makes their own everything, I would not choose this place. The drinks are too sweet and taste like straight sugar, bbq is okay (they offer only one sauce), and their sides are just okay. The service, however, was top notch. Our server was Colton (I think?) and he was the life of the party. He made our whole experience phenomenal. We all ordered off the happy hour menu, but I guess there's no buttons for the happy hour pieces, so he just tried to discount our food the best he could. We think it all came out okay, but didn't love not knowing. If you offer happy hour, honor the happy hour pricing with proper buttons. Basically, this place just feels like a restaurant that isn't prepared for customers, which is odd. I don't know how well restaurants in this area do, as this is the third restaurant in that exact location within 10 years. Maybe that's normal, idk. Overall, I would go again if all my friends were going, but I wouldn't recommend it. read more

My second visit I was going to just let my previous 4 star review slide, but then decided against that. I have generously kept the 4 stars with disappointment because I had predicted 5 stars in a month. The menu is not all that extensive, but they did not have any brisket. Of the sides they had only fries, store bought macaroni and potato salad and green beans (canned with some meat). No cornbread, no mac and cheese... The chef or owner came out to convince me the store bought potato salad fooled me into thinking he made it. Nope, my previous visit your manager TOLD ME you make everything in house. A month later you don't. Still no tea, sweet or unsweet. Our server was sweet but I had to ask her repeatedly for things like the bbq sauce for my ribs, my to go box, etc. It was hard for her having to tell us the weekend take out business left them out of a lot of items. I have an idea! Close on Monday and restock! And just because I am nice enough not to insult your potato salad doesn't mean I am fooled into thinking it is made in house. My friends and I think this eatery is in for a struggle. The sampler we suggested they add on our previous visit is on the menu for $35!! We saw there was a new BBQ place and Phoebus and wanted to check it out. It's rainy today so the inside was a little humid when we came through the back entrance. The manager greeted us promptly and sat us in a comfortable booth. There is plenty of seating for large groups. They are just getting started so got a paper menu and we're serving coke products. I got a half rack ribs with coleslaw and vegetarian baked beans. My ribs were smokey and came with a side of sauce. I enjoyed the baked beans. They were sweet and smokey. The sides were good portions. My husband had the loaded smoked sausage on buns which had coleslaw and beans on it. He had a side of shoestring like fries. The manager was really friendly and attentive. There were several other tables with customers while we were there and someone came for takeout. I saw on FB they are Door Dash too. Nice laid back country feel. Huge bar w/stools, comfortable cushioned booths or cushioned seated tables. Small stage for entertainment which would make any seat a great seat for viewing. Zoey our server was nice and friendly. Made great suggestions for the pescatarian dietary restrictions. The music was a nice upbeat mixture of every genre from modern day music. Had the pleasure of meeting chef Will! Looking forward to coming back on a night when they have entertainment. read more

Wow! We were at the IPMS nationals at the Hampton Roads convention center and wanted lunch. I chose the Phoebus Smokehouse and became THE HERO! We were greeted by Banko and seated. He then explained the menu as we were new. We all made our choices and waited with bated breath for lunch. We were NOT disappointed. I had the special when was a pulled pork Sammy with three smoked wings. It was spot on! Service A+ Food A+ Now, here is the kicker. As of this writing, the smokehouse has been only been open two weeks. They are on the fast track to greatness! read more

The hostess that greeted us was absolutely amazing. She was thorough, kind and very informative. I love to support small owned businesses and after a day at the beach, really had high hopes for this place. Unfortunately it was highly disappointing. I have smoked TONS of meat and I know some people rely on the smoke flavor to make up a lack of seasoning and that's what's happening here. We tried the yams, potatoes salad, macaroni salad, fries, wings, burger AND brisket. Not being here before we wanted to try as much as possible. All of the sides were out of a can. You could tell. But you can jazz up canned/boxed food with a little seasoning but they didn't attempt it. The chef was in the lobby greeting people so I also think the sides and brisket were old. I really hate to even leave this review and I'm doing so hoping they will self reflect, ask for honest feedback and make the necessary adjustments to thrive. They smoke the food out back and you can tell they know how to properly smoke meat. But that is the only plus side. Lastly, the soda machine was out of carbonation and the soda was warm. The round ice cubes were a nice touch but it only watered down an already flat soda. They were also out of things which doesn't look good at 5pm on a Saturday. I'm a BBQ connoisseur. I've been to all of the BBQ restaurants in this region, and while I haven't reviewed them, I intend to starting with Phoebus Smokehouse. I heard about it on Yelp as a new restaurant to try. My wife and I visited on a Sunday around 1:30pm. Our server said they opened May 29th. There were two other small groups in the restaurant. First, what's best: the ribs, and the service. We shared a full rack of ribs (12) that were brined to perfection, smoky, meaty, fall off the bone and tender, for just $30. We could only eat eight. Country Grill and Smokehouse, Smoke, Old City BBQ, Scoots, and Alpha Pitt Smokers -- take notice. Your ribs are overcooked, skimpy and expensive. Yes, I left off Bubba and Franks and Pierce's on purpose-- no smoke. Our server was friendly, attentive, and helpful without hovering. She did let us know what they didn't have, so positive points for service, but negative for food. Second, what's mediocre: coleslaw, Texas toast, unpreparedness, and ambiance. The coleslaw was room temp, bland and mayonnaisey. The Texas toast lacked flavor. They were out of iced tea (what‽) and several entrees. The Phoebus Dive Bar ambience still lingers-- we almost turned around when we came in, but we wanted to give it a chance. Phoebus Smokehouse has great potential, and their BBQ (particularly the ribs) and service sets them above the rest. Everything else is fixable. We were walking down the street and were drawn by a sweet aroma coming from Phoebus Smokehouse. Their chopped brisket sandwich came topped with coleslaw and the house homemade barbecue sauce. A side of French fries as good as I've ever tasted. We had our dog with us so we ate in their very pleasant outdoor courtyard. The service was excellent. Definitely coming back for more. read more

The service is amazing as well as the food. The ambiance of the restaurant is amazing. The workers of the business Phoebus Smokehouse is amazing catering to customers. The bathrooms are incredibly clean and kept well kept. The dinning area is kept Clean as well making the environment phenomenally.The food is top tier being one of the best I've had in a while and the food being seasoned to perfection I would recommend this to anyone!!!!!!!!! read more

The ribs were out of this world good and that Hamburger had so much flavor better than a home cook out holiday burger! Whoever is on the grill/smoker knows what they are doing! This might have been a nice visit to this restaurant, but for the service. It started out nice enough, but we waited for 45 minutes to get our order. The restaurant was totally distracted from the customers because there was a burlesque show being set up to be conducted and those that walked in to eat and NOT see the burlesque show were ignored. How does it take 45 minutes to serve smoked pork and green beans? Then to top it off the waitress brought our food to our table in to go containers because we had to leave because we didn't have tickets to the burlesque show. Unbelievable. I can't see this place lasting too long. If you want to run a burlesque then run one. If you want to continue to rein a restaurant then you might want to consider keeping the main thing the main thing. I will never come back to this restaurant. We went across the street to the Sand Man and got our food in ten minutes and the service was on point. read more
