I get the house special everywhere I go. Normally, I like to get my rare steak on the side. As if you put thin slices of "rare" steak into a hot bowl of soup, it instantly becomes well done. I had asked the waiter to put my rare steak on the side. He could have just said no, but he tells me they don't sell raw meat. The answer was a little off putting. I had asked for extra lime and basil, well as nuoc beo. Iykyk. Waiter said ok to my requests... but never brought it out. I had reminded him, but he didn't seem to care. This place is definitely not for me. I wouldn't recommend to anyone who also has pho on a weekly basis. $20 for a bowl of low quality pho is crazy talk. This spot kept changing ownership ever since the T-Box burned down more than ten years ago. I saw that they opened Pho U a couple weeks ago and been meaning to try it so I finally decided to come during the new year rainy week. Got the house special pho which comes with a combination of meats and it was great. Super clean broth and good amount of meat pieces. All the meats were well cooked and none were hard to chew on or anything of the sort. I was really impressed with how good and clean the broth was and so glad that they opened in La Crescenta. I happened to be out in La Crescenta after work one evening and was getting pretty hungry, so I decided to look for some pho (thank you, trusty Yelp). Ended up at this little spot and went with the #1 House Special Pho. The bowl was a good size, and the broth was clean and light without being oily. The noodles were cooked just right, and I liked that they included sliced white onions with the veggies. I loved their soup noodles so far. I mostly lean toward soups that aren't stuffed with too many ingredients, and this place checked that box. My husband also enjoyed the meal. I do have to say that Spring Rolls could be more savory but overall we had a good time eating at this place. Thai tea is just the right sweetness level. I've been here twice already. They honestly have the best pho broth in town. It's so aromatic the moment it arrives to your table. It smells like clove or star anise and tastes phenomenal even before adding other toppings. My husband also tried their Shortys iced coffee and it was excellent. A tad too sweet for my taste but very good nonetheless. Staff is always friendly and exceptional here. Called in the order for take-out for me and the better half. TLDR: it's the better local pho spot, a solid 4.5 stars, that I rounded up to 5 due to the great service from the owner. This place is where Nanuri Snack used to be. Pho was legit, my wife and I agree it's our favorite of any of the local spots in CV, Montrose, LC. The broth was really good! Flavorful and not overly greasy. We were pleasantly surprised! The meat (brisket and rare steak) were a bit on the smaller side, but complimented everything well in the grand scheme of things. Did I mention that the broth was really good? Because the broth is really good! Anyhoots, we also got the following sides: - 10 pc dumplings: my son gobbled it up, said it was delicious; I wouldn't know, he didn't share. - egg rolls: decent, get it if you like egg rolls, easy pass for us. - Summer rolls: they add some apple pieces in there which I enjoyed (wife wasn't a fan). Food is bland had to add a bunch of hoisin sauce and chili paste/sriracha. I give it 2 stars cause it was eatable but not that good. I was sad to see that Nanuri Snack was gone (where will I get my tuna mayo kimbap now?) but my husband and I decided to try out the place since we are always looking for good food in our area. We got the galbi pho and the pho tai (rare steak) and both were delicious. The rib was HUGE and the portions were big! They're generous with the toppings too. I've passed by Pho U many times with my curiosity level increasing each time. So, I'm battling a slight cold today and decided that Pho U would be the remedy to cure all. I ordered the beef rib Pho and an order of chicken egg rolls. OMG it was love at first bite! The broth was intensely delicious, the beef rib was so tender and the egg rolls were crunchy and flavorful. Their food reminded me of eating dinner in my mother's kitchen. Ordered for my family and I. I was pressed for time, but wanted to get one of my mom's favorite meals for her birthday during my break. It's hard to find a good local pho spot around these parts, but I think this place did an okay job. The only issue is I asked for the noodles not to be cooked because pho noodles in particular tend to get bloated pretty quickly. All three pho orders already had the cooked noodles in the container. It was not that much of a big deal for my family, but I was planning on eating mine for a late dinner after work. I ended up only eating less than 1/3 of it, and throwing the rest away. For what it's worth, the chicken pho was pretty good. The broth is refreshing and the chicken pieces were decent. Finally a good Vietnamese place in town! Right away it was nice to see that the place is clean and we were welcomed with friendly service. It's ridiculously good - we hit Pho U in Montrose for Thursday lunch and left already discussing when we could come back. Self-professed Pho nuts, we've eaten a bowl or three and Pho U is a fantastic new place on the scene. The Fried Dumplings / Chicken came out flaming hot and perfectly crisp. Thin skinned, with a good meat ratio to wrap, the chicken was finely-minced with mild spices. The salty kick from the soy sauce side was almost not needed - I could easily pop about 10 of these on their own. (An option of a sweet chili sauce would be fun with these and allow the chicken to shine vs the soy.) We also had the Vegetable Egg Rolls - again, the OCD Chef in me appreciated the care shown in the finely chopped interior of cabbage, mushroom and carrot in a thin, but delicately layered wrap. Perfectly crispy on the outside with a slight pull on the thin inside layer - it comes with a classic peppered fish sauce and lettuce leaves - which will protect your fingers from the again, fresh, hot out of the fryer crunchie goodness. (Hint: warning that you should wait for this stuff to cool OR just suck up the burned gums as you snarf them down like I did.) Onto the main event - this day we both opted to try the Pho Chay (Veggie Pho) to pretend to be healthy by counterbalancing the fried tasty goodness of the appetizers with fresh vegetables. You'll start with the classic additions of bean sprout, jalapeño, lime and a cloud-like pile of lovely shaved white onions. No basil or cilantro today, but after tasting the broth just as it comes to the table - I feel that those strong flavors could have overpowered, glad they were missing. The generous bowls were filled with perfectly cooked thin rice noodles, with a nice veggie array of broccoli, asparagus, carrot, green bean, bok choy and toothsome mushroom spears (you can add Tofu if you want.) The broth was clear, light and flavorfully rich without being heavy. It def could stand in its own without any veg in it, which isn't always the case if you go for a non-meat Pho. Simple clean interior, street parking, good prices, attentive friendly folks, and very obvious care about what is coming out of their kitchen. Like many places I've visited with only maybe 10 items on the menu - instead of doing too much, they've opted to do select things very, very well. It felt less like a restaurant and more like having a meal in your buddy's kitchen - the general warm vibe was more than just the temperature of my Dumplings :-) Come pull up a chair, I'll probably see you there! :-) read more
