Saigon Palace Special Pho - Pho Dac Biet
Rhea C.

I was craving for pho and this is the nearest one so, I decided to give them a try. The wait was long and it was just one lady working. Poor thing. The food was good; no other complaints besides waiting.

Bahn mi
Amelia J.

Tried Pho Saigon for the first time and everything was yummy! We had takeout. The Bahn mi was delicious and the scallion pancakes were so flavorful. I can't wait to go back and try more things.

The owner was very sweet. The smoothies were made with real fruit and the food was delicious!

This is authentic Vietnamese food. the people are amazing to talk with but most importantly the food is insane! definitely try the spring rolls then out on the magic 4 sauces. Just make sure to sit in the middle tables not the booths. definitely recommend -- you're taste buds will not regret it.

Saigon Palace Special Pho - Pho Dac Biet

I have mixed reviews about this restaurant. Although the food is good and service seems to be decent, the inconsistency in the arrival of food is too big to ignore. I first noticed this even before I ordered with a table across the room. 2/3 customers were deep into their meals when the final order finally came for the third at least 10 minutes after. My second notice of this was for my own table. My partner got his pho and I had to wait another 15 for mine and another 5 after that for my Bahn mi. Before I got my meal, two other customers who ordered and sat down after me, at separate tables got their orders within minutes of ordering. I would understand if the bahn mi took longer to make but at the minimum, I would have preferred if both pho dishes arrived at the same time. In total, I waited 35 minutes for my dish while other tables waited less than 10. Now on to the food: if you're going to order anything from here, have it be the pork bahn mi. It is absolutely delicious and has the most flavorful pork. Any other pork dish from here would probably be amazing too. The pho is not bad, with good soup flavor. 24 is the classic special but if you're not feeling the entire meat combo, any of the other options may suit you. I opted for 29 which has the rare steak and soft tendon. The steak doesn't come rare, probably not a fan favorite look in a small town but still tender and I take the meat out to stop it from over cooking. The tendon is really soft and melts in your mouth. I thought the portion of meat was perfect for the amount of noodles provided. I would probably come back and do takeout for the bahn mi but not dine in again.

"Lemongrass" chicken w no lemongrass or flavor--$16.50
D W.

Honestly, if I could give negative stars, I would. The quality of this place has declined in recent years. This happened after the switch over in management more so. I have referred many people here for the lemongrass chicken dish. I haven't had in a while because the prices went up dramatically and the quality is inconsistent. I like supporting "mom and pop" restaurants and was willing to deal with the inconsistency and the price increase ($13 to $16) because generally the food tasted good. When I say inconsistent, I mean, sometimes it came with vegetables, sometimes it didn't. Sometimes the meat was in a separate box, sometimes it wasn't. Sometimes there were cucumbers, radish and carrots. Sometimes peppers. Sometimes it come with sauces. Sometimes not. Sometimes there was a decent amount of food. Sometimes it wasn't. The point I'm saying is it was very inconsistent. So today, I go and order lemongrass chicken. The woman on the phone sounded as if she didn't know the dish. But finally said, "Oh, yes lemongrass chicken." That should have been my tip off. But I hadn't had in a while and wanted something different. I go to eat and the chicken is parboiled with absolutely no flavor. I have used soy sauce to down some of it. At $16.50 and about 2 healthy handfuls of chicken and peppers (this time), it's a permanent no for me. No lemongrass in sight. Bland. And disgusting frankly. I also asked for chopsticks. Those weren't included. I'm including a picture so you can see. Perhaps there are some pictures on here of how it used to look, but clearly it doesn't look good. Also, I went in and saw a few people eating in the restaurant today. I thought, "Ok, well maybe it's better." Either they were duped like me, desperate, or have no taste buds. Lesson learned. Too bad because Lynchburg, in my opinion, really struggles for decent non-American food.

Banh mi sandwich gone wrong due to wrapping
E C.

Came back to try this place again and only regretted it. Stopped in for lunch break but decided to take to go. Ordered the Banh mi sandwich. When I pulled it out of the bag, half the sandwich immediately fell out and spilled all over the floor. The ends of the sandwich were NOT wrapped like they do at Subway sandwiches. What a complete waste, because they were too cheap to use enough paper to fully wrap the sandwich. Too many disappointing experiences here. Let's not even get started with the terrible customer service.

Steak Thinly Sliced Eye Round Steak & Soft Tendon Pho
Jesse P.

I love asian food of all kinds and this place delivered some serious flavor today. I had the rare steak and soft tendon pho today and it was amazing. The steak was thinly sliced and cooked perfectly and the soft tendon had so much flavor. The broth was seasoned great and with a little sriracha it opened up my sinuses really well. I also had an order of the fresh summer rolls and they are some of my favorite I've had. Fresh is the proper word for them. They'd make the Prince of Bel-Air proud. The staff was very friendly and personable even with a little bit of a language difference. The atmosphere was very laid back and there appeared to be a couple of regular customers in there too. I didn't try the bubble tea, but next time I go you can guarantee I'll be trying it to give me something sweet to contrast with my pho. Their portion sizes are nice as well. If you're in Lynchburg and you want legit Pho, you gotta check this place out. After typing all this out, I kinda wanna go back for seconds already... who's in with me??

Small #28, steak and flank
Charlene C.

Arrived around 1:30 p.m. on a Sunday and there were still plenty of seats available. One of the staff seated us immediately. Ordered a small #28 pho, which comes with "rare" steak and flank. The pho had great flavor, with a generous amount of scallions and served with plenty of fresh bean sprouts and basil. It would have been nice if the meat was actually served rare. Maybe I'll just have to ask for it next time. The small size cost $8.50 and was filling enough for me. Service was a little bit slow. The waitress didn't notice us while we were waiting for her to take our order. She was apologetic and friendly. Don't forget to try one of the complimentary yummy guava hard candies after you pay for your order at the cashier.

I usually go here when I'm in LYNCHBURG. Solid cha gio (egg rolls) and banh mi (sandwiches). I also like the bun vermicelli bowls.

Very very nice lady (owner) and very helpful with the menu. - I had the chicken Pho ($16.50). I added the 2 included Hoisin sauce packets. It also came with a Sriracha sauce packet and a small container of chili oil along with the normal variety of noodles, sprouts, fresh herbs, green onions, white onions, jalapeño slices, and a lime wedge. The chicken was tender sliced white meat with no fat, gristle, or bones attached. The broth had a lot of flavor and was delicious. - I also had the shrimp and chive dumplings ($7.00). Not a strong shrimp flavor, but they had a nice crisp on the outside and were tasty. The sauce that comes with the dumplings is absolutely delicious. - My wife had the Bulgogi beef ($14.50). She said it was tender and very delicious. It came with rice, kimchi, and cucumber salad. I just happened to speak to Linh about the cucumber salad and she said this is how she's always made it for her kids and they love it. Well, I'm with her kids and love it too. She makes the vinaigrette herself and it has an unexpected sweetness to it instead of the usual strong vinegar flavor. We both loved it. - We had the pork gyoza ($7.00). This was cooked my favorite way, deep fried (not pan fried). This took me back to the gyoza in Japan and the Yaki Mandu I used to get in Korea. Great crispy wrapper with a tender flavorful filling. And again, the sauce that came with it is some of the best I've had. - The kimchi is not overly spicy and has a slight sweetness to it. - The Egg Tarts ($5.50) are good, not overly sweet. Could use a bit more filling for a better filling to pie crust ratio. - I also got a Chai tea bubble milk ($6.25) that was super delicious. Overall, we really enjoyed Nguyen's Kitchen and will go back with friends. It's unfortunate that it sits behind a Taco Bell and is not highly noticeable from the road, otherwise I might have tried it sooner.

It has no fancy restaurant front, no fancy landscaping, no nice trimmed green grass, and the two handrails of the three cement steps going up to the entrance door are rusted and almost falling down. Yet the small parking lot in front of the place is often full of cars during lunch and dinner time. But since it is often these hole in the wall restaurants that have the best ethnic foods, I decided today to go try it out. Just above the restaurant's building one can see the beautiful Mill Mountain in all its splendor with the green color of the Spring and above it, the Roanoke Star, highlighted by a beautiful blue sky high above it. You can appreciate this more by viewing my photographs that accompany this review. After I entered the restaurant through two simple glass doors, the inside of the restaurant was clean, with its walls painted white, its floor tiles nice and shiny, and its decor in the minimalist style with only nice looking furniture and nice original paintings and artworks evenly spread around the walls of the restaurant. It had large windows in the front that brought in bright light. Next to the windows and walls were dark red color booths and in the middle of the dining room were tables and chairs. As soon as I entered I was warmly greeted by a young man behind the host's station, who welcomed me with a big smile, handed me a copy of the menu, and asked me to take a seat at the table of my choice. After walking around I went and sat at a table that I not only could feel comfortable, but was situated in a central location with good light so I could observe the restaurant well and be able to take well lit photographs of the food items as soon as I was served and while enjoying my dining experience. The same host doubled as my server, and came by my table with a happy smile to see if I was ready to order. To drink I ordered the CAFE SU ADA, a Vietnamese Iced Coffee with Condensed Milk. As appetizer I ordered Ha Cao, Deep Fried Pork Dumplings served with mixed fish sauce. I also ordered their Goi Cuon Tom 2 Cuon, a shrimp, lettuce, and noddle rolled up with a rice paper, and served with peanut butter sauce. As the main course I ordered their Com Suon, Steamed Jasmine Rice with a Grilled Pork Chop. While ordering I talked with the server and he told me that this was a family owned and run business, together with the AA Asian Market that was inside the same building with an entrance from the restaurant. His mother seemed to be the cook, and his father in charge of running the Market. Through my experience I have found that this is very tipical in many ethnic groups restaurant businesses. The food all came out at once, even though I told my server that I would like my appetizers first. So I would recommend you order the appetizer first and after you're done eating it then order your main course, so the second doesn't get cold and you have more time to enjoy both while conversing with your guests. Everything was delicious: the dumplings, the pork, and the shrimp roll, although I found the rice paper a bit too thick and sticky, making it a bit difficult to handle. The sauces accompanying the food were also extremely good tasting. When I asked what they had for dessert, my server walked to the Market and brought me one of their popular desserts. Not knowing what it was, I ate it anyway. The sweet sauce was good but I didn't care much for the pieces of some type of pieces of a vegetable it had inside. In conclusion, I would definitely recommend this restaurant for a wonderful Vietnamese Cuisine dining experience. Both the food and the service were great. So much so that I feel in the process I got to learn more about their culture as well.
