I am a little more picky about VN food than most white American men, having lived in the "little Saigon" area of Denver, stayed five weeks in Hue and Saigon the summer of 2001, and married to a woman from Hue. I had the Hu Tieu Dac Biet Combination Bowl, and it was good, but it was not special or excellent. I think this is partly due to the fact that there is no serious competition for VN food in the Charlotte area. In Denver, you will find one VN restaurant next to another, next to another. So, they all have to be outstanding to survive. There are more than a dozen VN restaurants in a one-mile stretch of Federal Blvd. My broth could have been a little more flavorful and "porky". Though there were many items in my bowl, there was only a small amount of each, and certainly not enough BBQ pork and ground pork. I guess I should have asked while ordering to put extra fried garlic on top, because there was hardly any there. It was good, and the size was fair for the price, but I am still looking for a VN restaurant that can match the quality that I can easily find in Denver, CO. read more

The only negative part of this experience was when drinks were ordered, the bartender gave the option of minute maid lemonade or freshly squeezed. Unfortunately, the freshly squeezed lemonade does not fill the cup, despite costing more than a minute maid lemonade. When asked to fill the cup, the bartender responded "no" due to the freshly squeezed lemonade only being the juice produced from exactly one lemon. I'm almost always craving Pho only this time I wasn't near my usual spot so I gave this place a try. I was pleasantly surprised, the food was great. Sometimes places can skimp on the seafood especially shrimp but I kept finding pieces when I thought I had eaten them all. The server was great, and patient with my son trying to order his specific order of nuggets with a side of ketchup . Their cocktails are pretty good too. I can't remember what I got because I asked the server for his recommendation but I know it was a margarita. There were other families there and I expected it to be loud and overwhelming but it wasn't at all. There's enough space between everyone that you don't feel on top of the other tables. Was a little peeved at first as I was standing around and not being seated, but realized there was only one waitress who was hustling to serve all the tables during a lunch rush. I come here to get the vegetable pho, no tofu with beef broth. There's been times I have eaten here two-three times a week just because I love it that much! When I told staff the item was missing, they causally stated "oh we ran out" I said okay, no one told me that & then I stated is there a discount that can be applied for the missing item and the staff stated "no". My partner and I came here with their friends. Pho Real is located on the 2nd floor of a strip mall. There's plenty of free parking on premise, and it's accessible by elevator, stairs, and a ramp. They were a bit understaffed with several people dining in as we entered on a Wednesday around 6pm. We weren't greeted right away, but she did eventually come and sit us but missed the part when we said we have 5 people total in our party. So we were seated in a smaller booth, and then later when she came to check on us we told her we are waiting on 3 people, and 2 of our friends walked in as she moved us to a bigger table. We placed our drink orders, and our other friend arrived. They serve alcohol and mixed drinks in addition to coffee, tea, soda etc. Pho is perfect for a rainy day. I ordered their pho dac biet with no meatballs, and I really should have gone with their large bowl -- next time I know. My partner ordered the hu tieu dac biet, and our friends ordered the bun bo hue. My partner ordered the blue Hawaiian cocktail, and it tasted like a piña colada with blue curaçao. I ordered their iced coffee since I saw that they use Cafe Du Monde, and it reminded me of New Orleans. Our friends ordered 2 Guavarita cocktails and one Thai iced tea. We had a good time and enjoyed our food. Our server also asked us how we wanted to pay, and gave us all our checks which I appreciate. I'd definitely come back if I'm in the area, and my partner and I both agreed that we should go for the large bowl next time. Their yellow crepe is quite good and you can do a half and half order with a small (yungin) pho, if you want pho too. My Pho expectations are always really high due to having a large amount of Vietnamese friends and them showing me hot spots and home-mode Viet food. Pho Tai - 3.5/5 - The broth was a little watered down but nonetheless still solid. The noodles and meat were excellent. Egg Rolls 5/5 - Tasted amazing. Can't go wrong with egg rolls! Interior 3/5 - The place is well decorated and I love the bar at the end of the restaurant but my only complaint is that I saw a roach skittering around the floor while I was eating. This is a review that I should've written a while ago but I wanted to keep giving Pho Real chance after chance. I've been going here for years, 7+ and I've tried a lot of pho places in Charlotte but I really felt no other place could compare to their broth. There's a lot that I can say but the main reason for the 2 stars is the sanitation. Or lack thereof. About 2 and a half years ago, I found a fly in my soup. A FLY. And a friend found a fly in their soup too while another friend found a piece of hair. I wish I was making this up but there it was and since then, we all stopped going. But me, I decided to give Pho Real another chance after a couple months because I felt the broth was too good. But I was always leery, afraid of what I might find in my food, and it shouldn't be like that. Since then I've found a hair in my soup twice, stopped going for a couple months, then tried going again. But it was this most recent time that I finally got fed up. I found hair in my papaya salad and at this point, enough is enough. Clearly from my multiple experiences it's not just a fluke accident. Do the cooks not wear hairnets?? I don't even want to know what's going on back there. How do you not see a fly in the soup??? How could you serve food like that and not do something about it. I am so disappointed. I came here because of the reviews and also word of mouth expressing how good their food is. Today is my Friday to treat myself and I am highly disgusted. Halfway through eating my Thai Lemongrass Tofu I started discovering multiple strands in my food. Can you say horrifying!!! Instantly I became sick and anxious wondering how if I swallowed food seeing how many pieces of hair was already in my plate. I would not suggest this restaurant! Yes, they refunded me.
